Doreen I was going through some old newpaper clippings and found Maya's "Prep Profile" on the Iowa City Press Citizen, when she was a senior in high school. She had listed this book as her favorite, at the time. It triggered my mind to remember how much I enjoyed it as well. I might even read it again. has anyone else read it??

Amanda I read it and enjoyed it. I like most of the books by Alic Hoffman that I've read. If you wanted to read something new, rather than re-reading "Practical Magic", Turtle Moon" is very good. As is "Ice Queen" and "The Blue Diary." Those first two are more magical realism, while the third is more ordinary fiction, but gripping.

eleanor This is my only Alice Hoffman I've read & 1 of the few paperback's that I'll hang onto & maybe read again. I usually don't re-read books but this one was so Upbeat? I just loved it. I still enjoyed the movie version too. LOL :)

Robin Practical Magic was a good book and movie,

Tanya I'm also a fan of Alice Hoffman. If you liked others, try the Story Sisters. I think this is one that can be read forwards and backwards. Didn't read it backwards but it was good all the same.

Robin Never read the Story Sisters. I read some of her newest one the Red Garden, it started out okay, and midway through the book she changed her style of writing.

Alice Hoffman is strange and wonderful. I love her books for some reason and enjoy them whether I listen or read.

Robin I tried reading her other earlier works, she has a gift for what she writes about.

Jan I loved Blackbird House. The progression through the years was so well done.

Robin Jan, Never heard of Blackbird House, will try to look that one up at the library.

Alice Hoffman is one of my favorite author's. I just finished Turtle Moon and The Dovekeepers. I really liked the Dovekeepers. It was a great book. Practical Magic is wonderful. I like how I love both the book and the movie. I think, at this moment, my absolute favorite by her is Blackbird House. I enjoyed it very much.

Holly I have read the book. It was entertaining however it (for me) felt like work to get through where as the movie was fun with just the right amount of suspense.

Karen Alice Hoffman writes novels as if they were poetic fairy tales--her style reminds me a great deal of how I imagine Hans Christian Andersen might have written if he had been born in the 20th century.
I love everything I've read by Hoffman. I've read Practical Magic, The River King, The Ice Queen, Green Angel, and Water Tales (the last two are more geared for young adults with simpler language, which actually makes them even more poignant to me.)

Susana I've also read and re-read "Practical magic". It's one of my favorite Alice Hoffman books. I love her writing style. In this case, regarding this book, i have to say that i also love the movie. But the book made me appreciate Jilian. I love her scene with Ben and the rabitt.(smile) Amongst other favorites are: "Probable future", "Turtle Moon", "The Ice Queen", "The River King", and even "Skylight Confessions" and "At Risk". Although i found those two really heartbreaking. Well, even more so that usual...

Siobhan may give what is shown in book

I love the character of Sally and her relationship with her sister. She is well wrote.
Some things in the movie, I liked better in the film.
But its worth readingx

Yeah, The River King made me cry. I love books that make me cry. And I agree that the scene with Ben's rabbit is absolutely charming, one of my favorite scenes in the book.

Siobhan -- Sally's probably my favorite too. It depends what mood I'm in when I read -- sometimes I'm in more of a Jillian mood and sometimes more of a Sally one. Hoffman does such a great job contrasting the two sisters -- between the two of them, there's something for almost every reader who enjoys character-driven stories.

Deborah Alice Hoffman is one of my favorite writers. Both she and Margaret Atwood were great inspirations for my own writing. Practical Magic is one of my favorites of her books, along with Turtle Moon - the first Alice Hoffman I read - Probably Future and Blackbird House. For some reason, I could not get through The Story Sisters though I tried several times. Alice Hoffman, like no other, influenced my style and voice. I often describe my novel, BAD GIRLS, as a cross between Practical Magic and the movie Moonstruck. I sometimes re-read her books; the prose is magical!

i was really into the book then the movie but i do like both the movie and the book.

I know it was kind of different.

I've recently read it and enjoyed it very much!

Raven I really enjoyed this book, it was recommended by my teacher for an assignment so I chose the one with the prettiest cover. I've never read anything before by Alice Hoffman, but I'm glad I so happened to stumble upon her. I loved the characters and the plot in general.

I agree, though I haven't seen the movie I've heard how great it is and will surely be watching it soon.

I agree, their relationship throughout the years was a bond I enjoyed reading.

I agree with you completely about the style of the book, and thank you for giving me a small list of books that I am going to try to read,

I loved Sally too, in my opinion she is the best character, but that could also be a little biased since she was my favorite.

Carolyn F. I read this book recently. I didn't read it previously because the movie trailers made it appear to be a kind of screw ball comedy but that is not the book at all. Ended up loving it.

Jennifer Cicchetto I finally read it 2 Summers ago. I just recently got the prequels/sequels- 3 total, and plan to read them this year!
