Umm, what else. . . I'm 21 and a library science major/english minor working in one of the branches of my local public library.

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments Yay! I hope you would like it, but it's not for everyone I guess. Only if you can handle some more dismal material. But it's such an awesome book!!!!!!

message 13: by Michael (new)

Michael Dolan | 19 comments i've read some really awesome books, lol. i'll try to get a hold of it.

message 14: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments Ok! The sequel came out this year (Catching Fire) and unlike many sequels to outstanding first books, it didn't disappoint. IT was just as good as the first.

message 15: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments Well, it's about this girl in a post-apocolytic world, where the USA has been destroyed and replaced by a rich and advanced Capital surrounded by twelve very poor Districts that are kept isolated. Every year there is the Hunger Games, which is when one girl and boy ages 12-18 from each District is chosen by a drawing and goes to the Capital to get ready to "compete." All 24 teenagers are forced to fight to the death in a giant Arena. The Games are broadcast on live TV as requiered viewing for everyone in the nation of Panem, to remind the Districts of their failed rebellin 70-something years ago. The last one alive wins, and goes back to their District to live a now-luxurious life. It's a bit grim, but very action-packed and completely awesome. It's very compelling and you won't be able to put it down, and it's so sad!!! But I really like them, and they're very popular.

message 17: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments Hmmm... I don't know what I'd compare it to, it's so original. People have said that it reminds them of the show "Survivor" and "Lost" mixed with the Uglies books, and "The Giver", though I don't quite agree with any of those. It's futuristic, but also almost in the past, because the people in the Districts have about the technology of the early 1900's, and then it IS sort of a survivor novel, with lots of action, but a lot of the conflict is internal and moral. It's also a bit of a social/political commentary, with even some romance. But really, it's too unique to compare to anything. It's almost like The Forest Of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan, because even though it's sad (but no where NEAR as depressing as FOHT), it still is very hopeful.

message 18: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments I would not reccomend the Forest of Hands and Teeth if you can't handle grim stuff. If you don't mind spoilers, see my review (don't know how to link to that).
But The Hunger Games is definitely NOT a waste of time in my opinion. It's one of my favorite books/series. The sequel, Catching Fire, won the "Best Book of 2009" poll or whatever on the Goodreads Choice Awards. They're really awesome, I just don't know if some people would enjoy them as much (like people who only like completely happy books with no bad conflict, which personally seems pointless). Anyway, I think it's amazing and I would guess that you'd like it. But then again, I don't exactly know.

message 19: by Harpoon (new)

Harpoon ... | 1387 comments Was this "Teeth" you are talking about made into a movie? I like the story of that movie. Creepy but entertaining.

message 20: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments No, The Forest of Hands and Teeth isn't a movie, as far as I'm aware.

message 21: by Harpoon (new)

Harpoon ... | 1387 comments Yeah, i just searched it here. sorry.

I thought it was two books. so are you giving it a 5/5?

message 22: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments Eh, I'd say 4/5, because there were things I didn't like about it, but overall it was a nice read.

message 23: by Harpoon (new)

Harpoon ... | 1387 comments The plot is something like the movie "The Village" right?

message 24: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments Eh, never seen it.

message 25: by Harpoon (new)

Harpoon ... | 1387 comments It stars Joaquin Phoenix and directed by M. Shamalan. He also directed the Sixth sense and Signs.

message 26: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments Yeah, I don't like horror either.

message 27: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments Lol, yeah. And I don't mind chick-flicks and funny movies.

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments Oh, I love Gladiator!!!

message 36: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments Yeah, I cried at the end. And several times throughout. But it deserved all those awards it got, totally.

message 37: by Harpoon (new)

Harpoon ... | 1387 comments Gladiator is awesome, until i've watched 300.

message 38: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments I liked 300 (AWESOME action) but I thought Gladiator's plt and characters were so much better and deeper. Russel Crowe is amazing.

message 39: by Harpoon (new)

Harpoon ... | 1387 comments Yeah, I think I agree. Great performance for Joaquin Phoenix, is he still a punk rocker?

message 40: by Harpoon (new)

Harpoon ... | 1387 comments Katie wrote: "What's 300?"

The gory movie "300". *.*

message 41: by Harpoon (new)

Harpoon ... | 1387 comments It is gory but it has heart. Its a must watch.

message 42: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments No, it's about this group of 300 Spartan warriors that march off alone to fight like millions of Persians.

message 43: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments I love history like that. But I should warn you, it may not be the most historically accurate movie. ^^

message 44: by Harpoon (new)

Harpoon ... | 1387 comments Yes, but it is based on a true story. Heard it from history class or something

message 45: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments Yeah, based on a true story. They may have taken a few liberties though. ;)

message 46: by Harpoon (new)

Harpoon ... | 1387 comments Yes, think so. but they still died all 300 of them. and this gave Greece an inspiration to fight.

message 47: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments Yeah...It was an awesome battle.
