Hello, I just joined this mystery lovers group. I just started Absolute Power by David Baldacci. How is it?

message 2: by Darcia (new)

Darcia Helle (darciahelle) Hi Charlie! I haven't read the book but I like Baldacci. Let me know what you thought when you've finished.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Darcia, I am about a 1/3 of the way through and I think I have read this book before I started tracking with Goodreads. It is good so far.

message 4: by Darcia (new)

Darcia Helle (darciahelle) Don't you hate when you suddenly realize you've already read the book you bought? I've also been out shopping and bought books I already own but haven't yet read. Now I do most of my shopping online and I check my Goodreads list when I'm unsure!

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh YES! We have a lot of books. The best thing is we can check out books from 20-25 local public libraries over the internet and pick the location to pick-up the books.

message 6: by Darcia (new)

Darcia Helle (darciahelle) That is a great feature for library-users. I was never good about using the library. I like to be surrounded by books. I keep buying them, despite the fact that I already own enough to keep me reading for the next few years! I actually have my own library in my house. My husband remodeled a room into an office/library for me (Yes, I am spoiled!) He got me a Sony Reader for Christmas and now I can get library books in an instant as e-books. I will never be without reading material!

Karen | 7 comments Hello,

I just joined the group but I love mysteries and am always looking for new authors to read. I am reading "The Perfect Husband" By Lisa Gardner. I just started and so far I like it. Has anyone read it?

message 8: by C.J. (new)

C.J. Lyons (cjlyons) | 19 comments Welcome, Karen! I love all of Lisa's books--her recent ones like The Neighbor and Say Goodbye were very compelling psychological suspense that dealt with tough subjects in a sensitive way.

Enjoy!

Michael Turashoff (superdaddy) | 3 comments Howdy all I'm a new member. Right now I'm reading "The Mysterious Affair at Styles" by Agatha Christie I read a bunch of her books when I was a teenager actually she was my first "big boy" author lol and have always found her stories wonderfully entertaining and so now I've printed off a list of all of her books and am reading them some for the first time and others for the 2nd time since there wasn't any order I read them in before. I am a huge fan of the "whodunnit" that has all kinds of twists and then finally ends with the murderer being the person you least expected it to be. Some of my other favorite authors are Grisham, Margolin, Martini The book I have to say is one of my favorites of all times would be "The Da Vinci Code" and then "Angels and Demons" I just read "The Lost Symbol" and found it pretty entertaining but not on the level of the others I didn't care for any of Brown's Pre Demons books I read them after the Code and Demons because I was fasinated. I really look forward to talking with other Mystery lovers in the hunt for the best story.
Michael

Great so far.
The Florida people do a fantastic job of putting on a good conference.

message 19: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Hi Everyone. My name is Sheila and I live in Illinois on the Mississippi River. I am 58, married, mom of 2 , grandma of 2. I very recently retired after 37 years as a respiratory therapist. I am very fortunate that I live only about 2 blocks from our new million $$ library. I have a difficult time reading regular or paperback print so usually order everything either in LP or audio. Our library is in a network with a whole bunch of other libraries so I can usually get what I need delivered to my local libary. I LOVE my library.

I am currently reading 5 books. (My hubby says I am the Queen of Multitasking). I just discovered goodreads this week and have been busy putting in my book list. (I am only up to the C's). Anyway I look forward to meeting you folks and sharing as well.

Janet | 2 comments Hi
I just joined this group. I love mysteries. I just finished Dive Deep and Deadly by Glynn Marsh Alam. it is the first in the Luanne Fogarty series about a adjunct scuba diver for the sheriff's department in a small town near Tallahasse FL. The author really makes you feel like you are there. I can't wait to read the next one.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Janet,
Welcome to the group. I need to read that series.
Charlie

Jennifer Girardin | 1 comments Hello everyone!

I'm Jennifer Girardin, and I enjoy classic & modern mysteries, British mysteries, cozies, and noir mysteries.

I like the classic works of Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Allingham, and Marsh, and modern authors such as M.C Beaton, Rhys-Bowen, and Carola Dunn.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

A likely story! Sounds to me like someone just established a convenient alibi!

:D

Welcome!

message 28: by Kate (new)

Kate (kate_writes) | 2 comments Hi, I like a good mystery that near makes me miss my train stop - of the classics, Agatha Christie, and lately I've been reading hard boiled noir, like Hammett, Chandler, Ross MacDonald.

Also, P.D. James, also, cross-genre (like Poe), also... okay let's pause for now.

I also like discovering new authors (both classic and today) whose mysteries I've yet to try solving ^_^

Happy Reading, folks ^_^

Hi, I’m David from Santa Monica, CA. I usually prefer novels of detection rather than novels where we watch the crime unfold through the POV of the criminals. My all-time favorites would be Rex Stout (because of the narrative voice of Archie Goodwin), Agatha Christie (because of the unrivalled plots) and Sherlock Holmes (because of the dynamic btw. Watson and Holmes). No, I’m not 100 years old. I do read modern mysteries, but I can’t think of any that supplant my favorites. Oh, A couple others I like are Frederic Brown (who also writes sci fi) and some Donald Westlake, especially “Axe.”

message 32: by Marc (new)

Marc Daniel | 9 comments Hi,

I'm Marc and Mystery is my favorite genre. Whodunit is probably the style I read the most and I agree with David regarding Agatha Christie. No one beats the Queen of Crime in that particular style.
I also enjoy complex plot mysteries with twists such as the Millennium trilogy or Dan Brown (up to the lost symbol).
I also particularly enjoy plots where you keep wondering what the hell's going on until the big reveal. In that category, Pines by Blake Crouch is the best I've read this year.

LGandT | 5 comments Hello, fellow crime and mystery lover here. I am also a book blogger/reviewer.

I was wondering if we can make our own thread and put our reviews there? Or where can we put them

message 35: by Feliks, Moderator-at-large (new) - added it

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 185 comments Mod
Welcome. Glad to have you.

In general: the golden rule is yes, you can do a lot of stuff here as long as it is not intrusive or disruptive.

You can create a thread for yourself under 'Links to Reviews'. This is a discussion folder set-up specifically for this purpose.

You can make a thread for your book reviews there and update it every couple weeks or so. Not updated every day or every week; because no matter how wonderful these reviews are no one wants unnecessary reminders on a daily basis.

With that in mind, feel free to let us in on your activity!

R.D. Murray | 2 comments My Name Is R. D. Murray

This is very hard to write and a little watered down. I don't want to say everything that happened to me, but when I was in the 3rd grade I was bullied so badly I wanted to kill myself at times.. I think it happened because I was shy, quiet and awkward. I was thrown in the boy’s bathroom by these 3 particular kids who would punch and kick me as hard as they could. I could barely walk as everyday they would abuse me over, and over again. The other kids in school would just laugh at me and no one helped. In fact, those same kids who watched and knew about my abuse would just join in, tease me, and they even threw food at me during lunch. My mom came to school so much to fight for me, but it didn’t help. I had just about given up living in this world. Somehow God saved me and I found writing. It was an outlet to take me away from the pain I was going through in this world. I wanted to create different characters, and a different world just to escape. Writing really saved my life. Now at 42 I just released my first novel called My Dead Blue Caterpillar. I have to say I still am a bit shy so this is hard for me, but I am starting a program to be a spokesperson and sort of a one on one help for kids that are being bullied or have went through the affects of being bullied. I am here because I love writing and reading and hope to meet new people.....
