Sarah | 13814 comments I just wanted to share that just before she came back to the US, Zu was in Durban and decided to buy me a Sharks jersey, even though the Blue Bulls are my team, and the Sharks are only my second favorite.
As she left the store, she noticed Percy Montgomery sitting on the curb. Percy Montgomery was the Sharks fullback and also the Springbok (SA national team) fullback.
He's the #1 top scorer for South Africa of all time, and played more games than anyone, and scored the most points of anyone in the last World Cup.
She made a move totally out of character -- she asked for an autograph for me! So now I have a signed shirt. Yay!
Does one wear a signed shirt? Or frame it?
I don't know.

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I think that depends on how really important it is to you Sarah. If you want it to last in pristine condition, then frame it. If it is more of a conversation piece, or if you want to wear it when the Sharks play, then wear it.

message 3: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments That sounds reasonable.

message 4: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I think of you every single time I hear a Rugby reference, Sarah. You are "rugby girl".

message 5: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments There are more references around than there used to be, thanks to Invictus.

message 6: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments My husband doesn't wear his signed stuff. I'll have to check if that's because it doesn't fit anymore or for some other reason...

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments My other rugby shirts are giant on me. This one actually fits, and it's quite cute on me :)

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Rugby players eat their dead.

That is all.

message 9: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) That's all they eat?

At least they don't marry them.

Why doesn't RA put his end punctuation inside the quotation marks, where it belongs? Is that some weird, midwestern, APA style thing?

Appropriate, but mean. :-).

Larry wrote, That's all they eat?

Yep. Especially when there's a plane crash involved...

message 15: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Ah yes.

message 16: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I was wondering where that comment came from. I forgot about that. Can't we blame it on the seventies or something, rather than the sport?

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Oh, are we talking about Alive? That book scared the poo out of me.

message 18: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments If it's cute on you I think you should wear it.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Sally...yep.

That quote comes from a bumper sticker I saw. Funny enough, I saw that bumper sticker about a couple of days after re-reading Alive.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Actually, I think it's a badge of honor thing, something that shows what rugby players are made of.

message 21: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments My rugby player has never made a meal of another human being. She did wrestle a beached thresher shark back into the ocean -- I have photos to prove it!

message 22: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I'm reviving my rugby thread now that I have Gail to talk to.
Gail! The Bulls won! I'll root for your Tahs for the rest of the weekend for you, though I'm okay if you don't get a bonus point.

message 23: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments The only rugby player I hang out with has a bumper sticker reading, "Who is John Galt?"

Look what I just did -- a literary reference and my punctuation inside the quotes, all in a rugby thread. I'm scoring five points for that try!

message 24: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Well done, Phil. Another two points for you if you can make the conversion.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Sarah Pi. How could I have missed this thread. Thanks, I think the Tahs need all the help they can get at the moment. I wouldn't begrudge them bonus points if I were you.

I found a closet Bull's supporter in my office at lunch on Friday. It was only when he said his second favorite team was the Reds that I nearly knived him in the back.

Another of the Saffies you keep trying to convert? He might have been trying to provoke you if he really said his second favorite team was the Reds. Nobody could like the Bulls & the Reds.

message 27: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 13, 2010 04:19PM) (new)

Yep, you guessed it. He is a keener Cricket follower than Rugby. He follows Australian Cricket. So I mistakenly assumed he followed the Tah's. He is certainly asking for trouble following the Red's (he wasn't joking).

Perhaps he hasn't been here long enough (would 8 years be long enough, should be!) to get the fierce rivalry that exists between NSW & QLD in any sporting activity.

I now have a spare ticket to the Tah's v Brumbies match.

message 28: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I'd be happy to join you, but that other ticket I would have to buy is a little out of my reach right now.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

I would love to help you out with, but I'm in a similar position.

I'll print your profile & sit it on the empty seat.

message 30: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Awesome. Everyone will say "My, that's a well-read elephant. Now can you move her? I can't see over her Blue Bulls hat, and it's offensive to begin with."

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Nahhh. The Australian crowds aren't like that, they are a very friendly mob (specially at a Brumbies v Tah's match), Bulls cap & all. They are also not Rugby League supporters & are therefore well read. A well-read elephant would be expected. You would be welcomed with open arms.

I'll get my son to put a bulls cap on your elephant and plant a big smile on it to pretend you are enjoying the game.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Sarah Pi you have gone very quiet. What is the idea?

How could your team have let the Red's beat you?

You were supposed to beat them to a pulp!!!!!!!!!!

message 33: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I know! I'm so ashamed. They couldn't make anything happen.
At least they'll be back at Loftus next week.

message 34: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Quite the shakeup today! The Force beat the Crusaders? The Cheetahs tied the Chiefs? The stupid Reds beat the Stormers? It all means we can get back on top as long as we can beat the Lions, which I wouldn't have said would be a problem, but last week was worrisome.

message 35: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Gail, how was the match live and in person? I'm glad your team won.

Also, I'm glad my team won and looked good doing it. Top of the log again and we need it, since we've got a rough road for the last three games.

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

Grrrrr. Yes our team won. Unfortunately it wasn't a great game. It was just me, my kids & a friend from my son’s rugby team (he took your seat, I hope you don't mind). There was a great atmosphere at the game. The crowd was over 40,000, which was a record for the super 14’s. The first half was spent kicking the ball from one end of the field to the other. No one seemed to want to keep the ball in hand. There were only a few try opportunities, fortunately by the Tah's. They finally converted one, much to the crowds excitement. Penalties dominated the game. While it was enjoyable to be at the game, it would have been a disappointing game for you to come & see. You were never going to lose against the Lion’s.

message 37: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Well, I'm glad it was enjoyable, but sorry it wasn't a great game.

No, we weren't going to lose that one.

I'm worried about all three of our next games though, since any of them could beat us if we had an off day: Sharks, Crusaders, Stormers.

And ending with the Bulls-Stormers sucks since they're both in contention and both have a chance of ruining things for the other.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

There isn't much in it for the race home. 2nd, 3rd, & 4th spots are still up for grabs. It would help us a lot if you beat the Stormers. :)

The Stormers are also yet to play the Crusaders.

It is anyones guess who will make up the Final 4.
What a great competition!!!!!

message 39: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Stormers TROUNCED the Crusaders tra la la!
I'm sorry your boys got beat today, but now we have to put our collective brain and will power to letting the Brumbies beat the Reds (and the Bulls beat the Sharks).

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

Sarah I am back. Controversial win by the Bulls over the Crusaders. (I don't mind it helps the Tah's)

Great win by the Tah's over the Chief’s.

The final 4 still undecided, one round left. It has been a great season.

message 41: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Yay! Gail's back! Just in time to watch the race for the finish. We're on top no matter what, which would be far more useful if FIFA weren't kicking the Bulls out of their stadium to get it ready for the world cup. They'll still have the advantage of not having to travel overseas, but not the confidence that playing at Loftus brings.

I'll root for the Tahs to get into the semifinals for ya. I would have liked the Stormers to win against the Sharks this week so they could afford to lose against the Bulls and still be in second. Now they're going to break each other this coming weekend. Hopefully the Bulls will rest the big players.

message 42: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Congrats on making the semifinals!

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

Yahoo. May as well enjoy the euphoria.

Thanks to the Bulls resting their players, we didn't have a chance to get a home semi final. (We only have ourselves to blame, the Tahs should not have lost the game against the Highlanders.)

Good luck against the Crusaders.

message 44: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Thanks! I'd wish you good luck in yours, but here's where we must part, since I'll root for the Stormers happily enough.

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

All is fair in love & war (and rugby). We have just declared war against all elephants. May the best team win.

message 46: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I saw someone in a Springboks jersey at the airport.

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

You might see a few of those around at the moment. Although strickly speaking they should have a Stormers or Bulls jersey on. Or better still a Waratahs jersey. Go the Tah's.

message 48: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Gail wrote: "Go the Tah's."

Tahs are best in pairs.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay Phil you've got me with that reference. I tried Googling it. My google only came up with references for the Waratahs?

If it was a reference to the ' then I should tell you I am a self confessed reject when it comes to spelling & grammar.

message 50: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I think it might be a reference to tatas. I could be wrong.
I was very surprised to see four new posts on this thread today!
