Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) My Favourite is The Stand by Stephen King, I read Children of Men last year which was great.

Years ago I read a book called Deluge which was flooding in London, but I can't remember who wrote it.

Suzanne (bellamy22) 'The Taking' by Dean Koontz

One of my favourites♥

Jim (jimmaclachlan) On the Beach was haunting. Not the usual action-packed take on it. A fantastic read, though.

I've read World Made by Hand A Novel, a post apocalyptic novel which was good. It is preceded by "The Long Emergency" which I still haven't gotten around to.

Alas, Babylon is a fantastic look at a post nuclear war scenario.

I Am Legend, which Will Smith starred in, was an excellent book, despite that horrible remake. It was also the basis for "The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price (MUCH truer to the book, better done & available for free on archive.org) & "The Omega Man" with Charleton Heston. Well worth reading, but Richard Matheson usually is, IMO.

I've reviewed all the above, if you're interested.

You should give 'Down to a Sunless Sea' a read. One of my favourite post-apocalyptic books. Imagine you were an airline pilot with an aircraft full of passengers and the world was deivistated by nuclear war when you were in the air. What would you do? Where would you go!

Its fantastic! Its out of print but you can pick it up on amazon for a penny :)

'Earth Abides' is on my to read list.

I've read 'The Road' and its fantastic, I hope the film coming out does it justice.

Melodie (melodieco) My favorite would be THE STAND. It's still King's masterpiece.

Do you remember that chapter in 'The Stand' that hasn't anything to do with the story, where it decribes all the random deaths of those who did survive the virus. Like the jogger who dropped dead from a heart attack or the child who fell down a hole.

Loved that bit, it was twisted but funny, typical King.

This is a gentle apocalyptic book, very good, but don't expect the typical violent beginning of the end type of scenario.

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments The Road is the only book in a post apocalyptic setting that I've read and it's one of my favorite books of all-time.

Try reading One then, the author and other readers have noted that it's very similar to The Road.

Just to Forewarn lovers of the Book.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) Graeme, I thought that part in The Stand too was brilliant. It made the story all the more real as things like that would happen in the aftermath of a disaster. Great read!

Haha, yeh I agree. I'll need to read it again, excellent book. Did you see the film/tv show version? Not so good, but you got to hear Larrys Underwoods song 'Baby can you dig your man?'. Tom Cullen was exactly how I imagined him though, M-O-O-N, thats spells Tom Cullen, laws yes!

Sam (ecowitch) | 29 comments I recently read The World Without Us by Alan Weisman which was very interesting. Admittedly it's looks at how the planet will cope if we suddenly disappear (rather well so it seems) but its another side to the whole apocalyptic genre that is often forgotten.

If you want a quick read, I would highly recommend Zombicorns by John Green, it is hysterical.

Or The Horribles by Nathaniel Lambert and Surviving the Fog by Stan Morris are also both rather good too
