Lucia (countingpulses) | 3 comments I'm suddenly in the mood to have a good sitdown and read serial type books. I don't know many (nor have I read too many), so I'm open to all suggestions.

I've read (and own):

- Harry Potter series
- Own only Book 2 "The Reptile Room" of A Series Of Unfortunate Events
- The Sandman (graphic novel)
- The Wizard, The Knight by Gene Wolfe

I plan to buy the rest of the books in ASoUF in the future, and the three odd HP books that I don't have, and J.R.R. Tolkien's LOTR trilogy. I'm open to all genres, including graphic novels.

I've seen a lot of Janet Evanovich (sp?) at Indigo. I'm not sure if her novels are part of a serial? I've noticed a lot of her titles seem to be like "A is For... B is For..." etc.

Anyway, anybody care to share their favorite serials?

message 18: by Charity (last edited Apr 30, 2008 12:00PM) (new)

Kathe (kitty12) | 1 comments Brigid,
No, you are not the only one whose does NOT like Harry Potter. I absolutly just do not like the series or the movies either. See, you are not alone

message 21: by Lucia (new)

Lucia (countingpulses) | 3 comments Hi, everybody. Thank you all for your suggestions. Maybe I went a little overboard when I said "everything floats my boat"? Not so much YA or chick-lit please ;) And here's a challenge for posts after this: no repeats, please. It's not that I don't like seeing duplicates, it's just distracting when I'm compiling a list of all the suggestions everybody is posting.

Oh, what the heck, let's just share the series that you've read.

message 22: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Oh sorry. Guess I didn't realize you were trying to compile a list for yourself. I thought it was a general 'So...what are your favorite series?' question. Oops.

message 23: by Carol (new)

Carol Evans | 13 comments These are some of the series I'm reading.

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
Nevada's Barr's Anna Pigeon series
Arcane Society novels by Jayne Ann Krentz/Amanda Quick
Sebastian St. Cyr mysteries by C. S. Harris
Patricia Briggs Mercedes Thompson series

message 24: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) One of new favorite series is Erec Rex by Kaza Kingsley

message 25: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (andreag) | 27 comments Since noone has mentioned him...
Terry Pratchett's Discworld series
Nominally fantasy, but some of the best modern satire around. Various books take on Hollywood, international politics, the postal system, religion, you name it.

The Discworld books are eally several series, featuring different main characters, but who inhabit the same world and put in frequent guest appearances in each other's series.
See the website for guidance on getting started.

message 26: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (dwell_ondreams) | 12 comments Actually it's Sue Grafton who has the alphabet series (Kinsey Millhone) & Janet Evanovich has a number series (Stephanie Plum). I enjoy both, though the early alphabet books are better than the newer ones. The last one (T is for Trespass) was kind of boring. I also enjoy the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, the Discworld series by Pratchett, Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton (the first 9 were fantastic, but it went downhill after that), Carrie Vaughn's Kitty & the Midnight Hour series, Harry Potter, the Burgler Who series by Lawrence Block, & more that I can't think of right now.

message 27: by Celeste (last edited May 14, 2008 08:41PM) (new)

Celeste (celestelueck) | 27 comments I'm going to go with my favorites here, because I can't keep track either:
The Wrinkle in Time series by Madeleine L'Engel
The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper
China Bayles Mysteries by Susan Wittig Alberts
Valentin St. Cyr Mysteries by David Fulmer
Maximum Ride by James Patterson
Aunt Dimity Mysteries by Nancy Atheron
Hercule Poirot by Agatha Christie(although not quite a series)
Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling(of course)
The Sister Grim Mysteries by Michael Buckley
I'm sure there's more, but that all I can think of at the moment

message 28: by Cynthia (last edited May 06, 2008 10:33AM) (new)

Cynthia (calvamom) | 22 comments Glad to see so many mentions of Wrinkle in Time. It is a long time favorite of mine. I read the whole series to my children repeatedly as well and they as adults all own copies. This list has also made me think about the joy of reading both Evanovich and Grafton. I just read the latest Sophie Kinsella and it was great fun, yet almost philosophical for a piece of Chic Lit. So many fun series and so little time. By the way, I've read all the Harry Potter books and they wouldn't make my top 10 list, either.

message 29: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne (random_pink) | 2 comments Some of the series I have read.

Harry Potter- J.K.Rowling
Lord of the Rings- J.R.R Tolkien
The Axis Trilogy- Sara Douglass
The Wayfare Redemption- Sara Douglass
The Tomorrow Series (onyl the first 3)- John Marsden
I have also started reading Books of the Cataclysm by Sean Williams
I have read the first book in the Darkglass Mountain Trilogy by Sara Douglass. The other books have not been published yet.

I noticed a lot of people don't like Harry Potter. I don't either... well, not anymore. I did until I finished the series. I have a lot of problems with the books especially regarding the ethical and moral values present... (please don't tell me I read too much into it.)

message 30: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mcd724) | 10 comments The Ender Series by Orson Scott Card

Then there are the books by Richard North Patterson that start with the Lasko Tangent and a character from that is in the next book, etc...so it is kind of a quasi-series...

And I am surprised no has mentioned the Anne of Green Gable series...Still love it after all of these years...

Also the Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey

message 31: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) how about this new series I discovered... The Pellinor series by Alison Crogger. The first book is called "The Naming".

message 39: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (fireheart223) | 13 comments The Warriors, by Erin Hunter, is my all-time favorite. I also love the Harry Potter books, and the His Dark Materials Trilogy, by Philip Pullman. And to get into a completely different genre LOL, I'm just now discovering the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon.

message 40: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) Lucia,
you mentioned that you were wonder about the Janet Evanovich series with A, B, C, etc...
Janet Evanovich doesnt write the ABC books, but instead writes the Stephanie Plum number series (One for the Money, Two for the dough). Her books are hilarious and a great series, but the ABC's you might have seen are by Sue Grafton. Her books are A for Alibi, S for Suspect...
No one has mentioned her on here yet, so its a new suggestion if you're interested. BTW, her books are mystery/suspense type books.

message 41: by Linda (new)

Candy I really loved the Drothy Dunneett series. I hope to read them again some day.
Twilight series
Stephanie Plus
Sue Grafton
The Bookman Mysteries by John Dunning
Nicolas Freeling
Kinky Freidman mysteries

I like a lot of mystery books as a series...I mix in mystery with my usual non-fiction reading and classic novels. I tend to read just a little less fiction than non-fiction in the last few years.

I also love Travis McGee novels. I have meant to check out a series by Jasper Fforde...but haven't yet...they are supposed to be awesome.

I've written down several series just from reading these posts, thanks !

Carol Bro (cjbro) | 34 comments Top of my list is Robert B. Parker's Spenser series and I have to say when I unexpectedly happened upoon an announcement of his death on Amazon, I literally burst into tears. I had no idea. I could always count on Parker to bring a smile to my lips with his clever writing and funny banter between his MC, Spenser, and Hawk, or his antagonist du jour. I am going to miss him terribly.

message 50: by Anna (new)

Anna I love the 'Foreigner' series by CJ Cherryh. It's my top favourite of any series.
