Mawgojzeta I am on a waiting list at the library for this. Darn it. Hopefully it won't be too long, though.

Min (minbuchanan) Oh my gosh this was a fantastic read! I had so much fun with it. I truly love Gail Carriger. I bet she'd be a great person to sit and have tea with. Anyway, below I've posted my review from last year. There are no spoilers but I do give away a little something about the nature of the book in my first paragraph. So if you want to be surprised skip that one. Though, I think if my bookstore housed this in the correct department I may not have been as surprised as I was.

This is an excellent book. I've given four stars instead of five only because I felt a little blindsided by the borderline erotica nature of some scenes. Not that I'm a prude or specifically against it, I would just prefer to know well ahead of time that's the kind of book I'm picking up.

Carriger is hilarious. I was laughing out loud in many places. Alexia is indeed a quirky, strong, stubborn heroine. I enjoyed her story very much. Toward the end I was actually sort of pausing here and there because I knew I'd be done soon. I was just enjoying the story to the point I was kinda bummed it had ended.

I can't wait until the next Alexia Tarabotti adventure comes out!

I don't consider myself to be a prude and found some of those scenes annoying(maybe because I wasn't expecting them), so I skipped those. I must say I loved Lord Akeldama and Professor Lyall. I really look forward to the next installment in the series.

Min (minbuchanan) Gisela - yes Lord Akeldama and Professor Lyall are great characters. It's just such a fun book. I'd probably read it again if it hasn't been on perm-a-loan since I finished it.

I bought 2 copies- ebook and paperback, there's certain books I can't stand to "perm-a-loan"!

Would you like me to ask Gail to answer questions on the group with us? I know her on Twitter. Maybe in a couple of weeks when people have had a chance to read?

Perm-a-loan? LOL! I have a few books that stayed that way! Lucky for me I have a Sony reader, since I can't loan my books I always have them with me! I do buy copies of the ones I love to "lend" to my sister, though in her case they stay on perm-a-loan! ^_^

Gisela (chicadorlando) | 180 comments Alethea you must have some hidden super powers because lady you rock!Or as we say here "estas brutal!" I have already marked my calendar to make sure I don't forget!

Hidden? LOL. I like to flaunt my super powers \(*O*)/

I hope we get more Lyall in the next book. He's a fun side character... very dry humor, with a heart.

I'm really looking forward to Alexia particularly in a comic sense--I can't think of a recent heroine half as funny as her. Can you?

message 13: by Gisela (new)

Gisela (chicadorlando) | 180 comments No, most are too busy being "kick-ass". Alexia in this sense is very refreshing. While she certainly can "kick-ass" she walk all over everyone in her life. Most heroines in urban fantasies would have made fun of and be rude to Alexia's family. Alexia takes a more political and polite approach. I loved that she tried to be polite in every situation she found herself.

Min (minbuchanan) Alethea - can you send the date and stuff out like an event to RSVP to on GR? Don't they have something like that?

Gisela - my sister is definitely a holder of a number of the books I count as perm-a-loan. I also lend books so much that sometimes I forget I've loaned it to someone and am surprised when the return it.

HAve you ever had a book returned and realized that you had already bought another copy? ^_^

message 16: by Min (last edited Jan 14, 2010 09:45AM) (new)

Min (minbuchanan) Gisela - oh yes! I did that recently with The Magicians. I am also the owner of two sets of the Poison Study series. At this point I have no idea where one set is, though I have two Fire Study books right now. So I may actually have three of those.

Same here... I think I lost 1 Poison Study, too! :( It's ok, I have 2 more plus the audio & ebook :)

- - -

Ok, back to the book, can I mention that I love how Alexia is a supernatural off-switch? I had never heard of or thought of such a thing (well, I guess you can count Valek and his "Ghost" capability) but to just be able to shut down vampire fangs with the touch of a finger? Neat.

I agree. That is a pretty cool anti-power. I really can't wait for what she does in the next book.: D

message 19: by Mawgojzeta (new)

Mawgojzeta Only part way through the book, but wanted to chime in quick to say I am enjoying it. The character Alexia is a hoot!

Just re-read bits of this last week. Anyone else get hungry reading this book? I am fairly sure I don't like treacle tart, but I really really want some now.
