Hello and thank you for the welcome Lisa! I'm Lizz, from Jacksonville, Florida. I love finding new authors, new books and new ideas on Goodreads. I had the account for quite some time before I actually USED it. I am just about to start Edward Rutherfurd's New York.

Hi, Lizz from Florida! I'm Sharon (Quiltgranny) from Missouri where it is just so cold it doesn't register on my thermometer anymore! -17 this morning, but we are expecting a heat wave this week - all the way up to the high 30's! LOL! A great time to be home, tucked up with some books! I am an avid reader, and I read about a book every other day or so. I love using Goodreads to track what I've read so I don't buy them again, and to track my wish list so I can print it and take it with me when I shop Goodwill, thrift stores, etc. I have found so many good reads (no pun intended) by following friends and friends of friends recommendations, and the discussions can be thought provoking too. Bookmarks has opened a whole new world for me, and between it and Goodreads, my mind has been stretched to far away places, strange and wonderful characters, and topics I would never have found without them. Welcome!

Well said, Sharon! You brought a smile to my face when you mentioned Goodwill. Friends of mine from the Busy as a Bee group know how obsessed I am with finding books at the GW. They've even started a thread on my GW deals. I also have a shelf here on Goodreads, which amounts to a library in and of itself, devoted to my GW purchases!

Hi Sharon, thank you for the welcome! 17 below.... okay that is COLD!! It has been, for Florida, cold the past week. In the low 20's at night. The native Floridians are not happy, those of us transplanted from other places (Virginia in my case) are totally enjoying the change of pace. I'm making soup today while I read.... lovely! I've also found myself looking at books that I would have either skipped, or missed completely because of reviews I have read here. It's a wonderful resource isn't it? Stay warm up there!!!!!

Yes, Lisa - you know how I envy your Goodwill finds. I often come home grumbling that no one reads anything in Missouri except the seed catalogs. Of course, that's not true, maybe they are keeping the good ones for themselves! Even when I travel, the GW stores are the ones I shop at for the books! LOL!

Hello-I am a 52 yr old wife & mother & recently found out that I will become a grandmother in July!!! Very Exciting..
I am a true "book slut"-hope no one is offended but it is the truth.....I am a mod for a private book group here on GoodReads & most of the members met through a musician's message board. I also belong to a couple of other Goodreads groups.

I am trying to keep myself from buying books for a bit-it is VERY hard but I have such a huge amount on my bookshelf....I hit up our local library's book sale that they offer a few times a year.....

This looks like a nice group of people, thanks for being here!!

It's nice to have another "book slut" on board. Last night while reading So Many Books, So Little Time: A Year of Passionate Reading I found out I was an adulterer, because I have a love affair with my books. LOL!

Hi - I'm Barbara. I could be considered a book slut like Becky (who is my friend from our other goodreads group) and perhaps I still am even though I don't read nearly as often as I would like. I buy more books than I can ever possibly get to since I am a full-time working mom w/ 3 boys under the age of 10.

I read a few years ago & totally identified with the author. I have been reading bookmarks magazine for years and love it. Bookmarks and indiebound.org are my two favorite places for book recommendations.

Hi, My name is Marci. I am from New Jersey(south) about a 1/2 an hour from Atlantic City and 45 mins. from Phila. I work in Philly as a RN. I happened across your group while looking for reviews of THe Huosekeeper and the Professor. A lovely little book. Somehow I was led to your group.. Has anyone here read it? I looked into the bookmarks site and just subscribed to the magazine. Thanks for the tip. Another avenue to feed my habit!!!

Hi, I'm Cathy and I live in Maine. I joined this group a while back and thought I should finally introduce myself. I have always loved to read and never leave the house without a book, just in case I find a few minutes here and there to read. I usually have two or three books going at the same time and just recently started listening to some audio books. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who reads through their Bookmarks magazine and then goes back over it with a highlighter! Books and lists.... my favorite things!!

Hi Cathy! Bookmarks magazines + highlighters seem to equal a lot of book junkies in this group. I love that Lisa and I have been able to bring together readers of such a great book magazine to talk about specific novels mentioned. Feel free to comment on any posting! Nothing is ever "closed" - I am still reading books from Bookmarks from many years ago!

Ditto that Cathy!! I am excited to get my 1st Bookmarks. Since my subscription will take 6 weeks, I plan on visiting my local Barnes & Noble to pick up the current edition!

Hi! My name is Cathy and I am an OR nurse in a Philadelphia suburb, but in another life I am a librarian..my true calling.

I have been a crazy reader since before I started elementary school. I joined Goodreads late summer or early fall, but have tracked my reading for years. I always have a book in progress and usually an audiobook in the car for my commute to and from work. I am in one local library bookclub, but love to chat up books with my sister, co-workers, and Goodread friends. I am listening to Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese and reading "Prayers For Sale" by Sandra Dallas for my bookclub. Soon to be followed by "The Unit" by Ninni Holmqvist.

I recently subscribed to "Bookmarks" and can't wait for the first edition to arrive. In the meantime, I will be stopping at Barnes and Noble to get the latest edition. There is a huge Barnes and Noble near to where I work and we are well-acquainted with each other.

My other interests, next to reading and more reading, are Scrabble and playing the trumpet and taking lessons with my twelve year old daughter. It's great fun!

I look forward to the literary exchange of information with all of you!

Welcome to our group. I'm sure you'll be adding more books to your to read list after you receive your first copy of Bookmarks. I'm also anxious to hear your thoughts on Cutting For Stone. It was one of my favorite books last year.

Also, to our new members, please check the polls and add your vote for our next group reads.

I bought Cutting For Stone 2 weeks ago along with my other 15 !! I read reviews on Bookbrowse which named Cutting for Stones, The hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, The Housekeeper and The Professor as best books for 2009. I read Housekeeper & Professor(a delightful Book so far before I went off on my Mormon jag.

Marci, I've got Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet sitting on my desk now. I plan to read it within the next month. I also want to read The Housekeeper and the Professor. It's on a themed list for another group I'm in and is getting rave reviews. I think I first put it on my TBR when someone in this group recommended it.

I also have Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet sitting on my desk!

The Housekeeper and the Professor is a very quick read that will stay with you. 170 some pages

Where in Philly do you work? I live & work in Center City.

I haven't read the Housekeeper & The Professor but is one I would like to, especially since its a quick read.

Where outside of Philly are you Cathy? I grew up in Delaware County but live & work in Center City.

Both of those books are very, very good!

Barbara, I work at Jefferson Hospital.i Trolled my local Borders and B & N for Book Marks, unable to find. I ran to Philly Borders on my lunch hour and found it. Also pick up copy of Publisher Weekly and The Strand to peruse. I'm off today s looking forward to a cup of tea and reading!! (Needless to say I can think about 20 other thing I should be doing... Oh Well!!!

Barbara, I live in Springfield, Delaware County. I have lived in Delaware County for many years, but grew up in Connecticut and moved to the area after marrying. I'm still a New Englander at heart.

I have not worked in a hospital-setting for about ten years now. I work at one of the Wills Eye Surgery Centers and enjoy eye surgery. What kind of nursing work are you involved in?

It's nice to be part of "Goodreads" and see what others readers read and share in their recommendations and thoughts about literature.

Cathy, I'm a former certified ophthalmic technician and retinal angiographer. I worked for an ophthalmic practice and ambulatory surgery center for over 18 years. I loved the work I did, especially the photography. I assisted in laser surgeries and minor surgical procedures, but never cataract surgery. I mainly worked with our retinal specialist. I miss the work and my patients, but not the long days on my feet or the grueling workload. I don't often find someone else in the eye business.

Marci - I live fairly close to Jefferson...a few blocks South & East in Queen Village.

Cathy - I grew up in Brookhaven and my good friend is a 3rd year resident at wills eye

Small World!!! Read my copy of Bookmarks last evening ... loved it! Created a little anxiety because I REALLY should not buy anymore books(bought 15 in the past 2 weeks) but found 1 or 2 I want. We will see if I can hold off! I mentioned on another site that Chris Cleave who wrote Little Bee will be at the Free Library in Philly on Feb 25th.

Marci and Lisa...All I can say is it's a small world. I do like eyes, but the surgery center setting is fast, demanding, and lots of time on your feet. I do get a break because I scrub for surgeries, often. The problem with that is eye surgery is quick, and you're not off your feet for long.

I too have read my purchased copy of the magazine and it does created the urge to shop for more books. I picked up "The Unnamed" by Joshua Ferris and "Something Missing" by Matthew Dicks yesterday.

Last week I picked up "Incendiary" by Chris Cleave because I did check out your link, Marci, and plan to attend the author visit on February 25th at the public library. I hope I can read through this, also, before that time. I did round up my copy of "Little Bee" to bring, but lent it to another co-worker, minus the dust jacket because it came back to me a little beat up. I will definitely be gathering it up for the February 25th date.

I also read "The Housekeeper and the Professor" this week and enjoyed it. I am now into the selected "The Man Who Loved Books Too Much". Last year I read the first two John Dunning crime novels "Booked To Die" and "The Bookman's Wake" because they were about the same subject. They are stories about an ex-cop turned antiquarian rare book collector and his adventures. The first book is mentioned in this book. I don't usually read crime novels, but the book twist and knowledge about first editions and that whole collecting world ran through the novels and made it interesting. The first book was better, but I read them in an edition where both were together called "Booked Twice".

Well, I've as usual gone on for too long. Happy reading, and maybe I'll run into you on the 25th.

I finished 19th Wife. Ready to start Little Bee. Cathy maybe I will see you there ! I know about hectic, I work on the acute rehab unit. Our patients are sick but we get them up for rehab 4 times a day. We are always in competition with the clock . The first therapy session is at 09:00, Sometimes you may have 3 or 4 of your pts who have 9 o'clock therapy. Our pt population includes stroke pt's, spinal cord, transplant pts heart, liver, kidney, LVad's Never boring!!!

If you look at the top of the comment box, you'll find "add book/author". Click on it, then enter the title. Next, you will find at the bottom of that screen "add: link or cover". Click on "link", then click "add" to post the highlighted link to the book title. If you want the book cover to appear, then click "cover" and "add". You can choose different editions of the book by clicking on "other editions". You can play with it to figure it out. Also, if you want to see if you've done it correctly before posting, then click on "(preview)" to the right of the post button.

Hi everyone, my name is Karen and I live in Locust Grove, Virginia which is near Fredericksburg. I work as an executive assistant which is a pretty hectic job so when I come home, my favorite thing to do is relax and read. I have more books than I will be able to read in my lifetime but I continue to buy, buy, buy (mostly at yard sales and via online swaps)... and gee where did I go today? The library to pick up more books. I am happy to have found Goodreads and even happier that there is this Bookmarks group!
