It's been a number of years since I read it, but I still remember the power it had over me. It was a Saturday afternoon, drizzly and cool, and I was sitting in my favorite chair reading. After I was done, I had such an overwhelming urge to drive to the beach. So I did. It was pouring, and the beach was soggy and desolate. I loved the smell of the turbulent ocean and couldn't stop thinking about the story...for days.

They were probably beer cans, but I'm sure they were steps. :)
You've mentioned Ian McDonald before. I have two of his books Terminal Cafe and King of Morning, Queen of Day still sitting unread on my shelf.
I've read one of Terri Windling's Year of the Best Fantasy and Horror anthologies and enjoyed it quite well.
