Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments Please tell us the authors that you like that write along the lines, or make you happy, like Ms. Kleypas' books.

message 2: by FlibBityFLooB (new)

FlibBityFLooB I think that Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series makes me happy like Lisa Kleypas. I know they have different writing styles, but I like both of them :)

message 3: by Eastofoz (new)

Eastofoz I second Quinn or Suzanne Enoch.

For something equally well-written but darker there's Anna Campbell.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments Christina Dodd
Teresa Medeiros
Jennifer Ashley (historicals)
Melody Thomas
Adele Ashworth
Eve Byron (doesn't write anymore I don't think)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments *** I'm not too swift sometimes... and posted this before remembering that we are comparing authors with the same style as LK. I was going to remove it, but will leave it in case you're looking for something a little different. Sorry! ***

Someone we don't hear about much, but I love is Kathleen Givens . She writes historical romance. On a Highland Shore was my first read by her and I really loved it. She uses a lot of historical events and people so not only did I get a great read, I learned something, too! This book was deep and at times very sad, but worth the read all the same.

I had started collecting her books about a month ago, and then just over a week or so ago she passed away suddenly. I can honestly say that when I think of her passing, I am truly sad.

This is her reading order:

Kilgannon Series:
Kilgannon
The Wild Rose of Kilgannon

The Torriden Series:
The Legend
The Destiny

Highland Series:
On a Highland Shore
Rivals for the Crown

And an anthology with Connie Brockway, Debra Dier and Patti Berg:
My Scottish Summer

Beanbag Love | 103 comments Newer writers Tessa Dare and Olivia Parker remind me quite a bit of the Kleypas/Enoch/Quinn troika. I'm really looking forward to their next books.

I just started reading Lorraine Heath and she's very good, but not as humorous as Kleypas. Pretty angsty. I've only read the first two in Heath's Scoundrels of St. James series so YMMV.

message 7: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Certifiable St. Vinnie's Ninny (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments Celeste Bradley's good. I think she's more like Julia Quinn than Lisa Kleypas

Kathryn Smith writes in the same vein as Kleypas. Very passionate and sensual stories with strong, heroes and heroines.

Rochelle (toastqueen) | 9 comments So, before Lisa Kleypas I never thought I would like historical romance, but I am hooked! ;) However, as much as I love her initial books (I'm currently on Worth Any Price) I absolutely adored her Travis' series, which was current-day romance. I would love to know of other authors with that similar styles, in addition to checking out the above-recommended authors.
Thanks!

Cheryl (ghemomma) | 900 comments How about Laura Lee Guhrke for historicals?

message 10: by Eastofoz (new)

Eastofoz I liked Guhrke's book And Then He Kissed Her which is very good once you get past the first third of of the book.

Rochelle I never thought I'd like regency historicals either until I read Kleypas :) I was more into medievals.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments I'd like to know of some contemporaries that are written with the same romanticism and passion as Lisa Kleypas writes. I don't care for the sex-focused contemporaries. I like there to be a strong romantic element to the story. For me, it's hard to find non-series contemporaries that have that to read. If you know of any, please post them. I don't read erotica generally, so I kindly specify non-erotic. Steamy is fine. No menage, please. (Sorry to be so demanding).

message 12: by Julianna (new)

Julianna (authorjuliannad) | 380 comments A couple of weeks ago, I read a novella by Stephanie Laurens, and her style reminded me a lot of Lisa Kleypas. I can't wait to try more of her books.

message 13: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Certifiable St. Vinnie's Ninny (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments I can see the similarity with Stephanie Laurens, Julie.

Julia Quinn Bridergton series is a great read and I like Tracy Anne Waron series of the Byron brothers these to authors make me happy

Beanbag Love | 103 comments Cynthia wrote: "Julia Quinn Bridergton series is a great read and I like Tracy Anne Waron series of the Byron brothers these to authors make me happy"

I like Tracy Anne Warren too. Her best, IMO, (and can be read as standalones) are: "The Wedding Trap", "His Favorite Mistress", and "Seduced by his Touch".

She has a new one out today, but I'm in the middle of a Nalini Singh book, so I'll have to get to it in a day or so.

But, yes, TAW has Kleypas potential, I agree.

message 16: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Certifiable St. Vinnie's Ninny (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments I think Kresley Cole's historicals bring to mind Kleypas. Not quite as dreamy in a romantic sense. But the strong emotions and descriptive writing. Excellent sexual tension, and beautiful depiction of Victorian times.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments Kresley Cole... I have her books If You Desire , If You Dare and If You Deceive. I haven't started them yet and I don't even know if they are PNR or MMR (merely mortal romance)

Thank you! Regarding MMR, I guess I made it up as I've never seen it used anywhere else. LOL I needed a quickie way to say "Romance genre where the characters are human with no extra powers." LOL

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

I have read every book by LK and love them all, have even re-read some fo them. I found that Elizabeth Hoyt's style of writing is very similar to LK (I ahve read all of EH's books too) I have no moved on to eloisa james until Lk comes out with more. I also recently bought some books but Victora alexander as well, and look forward to reading them

Shel Yes, yes, and yes. Ledgend of the Four Soldiers is definitely worth reading, especically if you can read them all in a row. I would recommend reading the first one, and then go from there if you like it.

Ally72 | 92 comments I don't know if this is the right thread to post this question, but I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for books like the Travis trilogy? I love LK's contemporaries (almost as much as her historicals) and would like to find some other books that are as good as (or almost as good...LK is so hard to compare anything to) "Sugar Daddy," "Blue Eyed Devil" and "Smooth Talking Stranger." Thanks!
Ally

Lisarenee | 392 comments After reading all of Kleypas' books (and yes, I purchased the ones out of print for big bucks off Ebay)I found Judith McNaught's historical(emphasizing the historical here) books an excellent substitution until the next book or books (as is the case this year - Yay!) come out. Highly recommend them. Unfortunately, McNaught switched at some point to contemporary books which while good do not capture the magic in her historical books.

I too purchased the OOP books for big bucks on ebay, and don't regret it one bit, they were certainly worth every penny!

I'm so happy you enjoyed the Judith McNaught historicals, Lisarenee. As you know, she was my fave since I was a teen and no other author was a substitute for her books (I would re-read McNaught's every few years), until I read Lisa Kleypas a few years ago. They are both my absolute fave historical romance authors. I cherish their books and characters dearly.

As some other people have mentioned here, while not as good as Kleypas' books, when I had no more LK books to read, I enjoyed the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn.

And of course Julie Garwood Highlander Romances are great, too!

I just picked up The Perfect Wife but I haven't read it yet. She sure has a lot of books on the store shelves.

message 40: by Lisarenee (last edited Jan 19, 2010 02:32PM) (new)

Lisarenee | 392 comments I've been thinking of looking into Victoria Alexanders' books, but not so far. Give me a month or so and I'll let you know.*chuckle* For those of you who don't know I read 300 books last year and have already racked up 20 for this year. I gave up TV and now reading occupies that time. Also, kind of helps ease my boredom while waiting to pick up kids in the car line (while car is stationary of course). I still need to list all the books I've read on Goodreads but have them all listed on a thread in another group on.

Still chugging my way through Lynsay Sands historical romances and a couple I've found really good - Love is Blind and Devil of the Highlands. There are quite a few more that I need to read, but my library doesn't have. May need to buy them. Right now I have my eye on The Switch. The description sounds good.

message 41: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments I have Devil of the Highlands. What was it like? Was it PNR as well as HR?

message 42: by Lisarenee (last edited Jan 19, 2010 03:14PM) (new)

Lisarenee | 392 comments No paranormal just strictly a historical romance. About a woman who has just been told by her Cinderella stereotype Stepmother she is betrothed to a man with a reputation for being cruel. Reported to have killed his uncle, father, and previous wife his nickname is the Devil of Donnachaidh. Very fun read. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sands does both historical and paranormal, but usually the PNR has an obvious indication in the title such as Single White Vampire.

message 43: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments Yeah, I have Once Bitten or something like... it's book 1 in her series, but I'm not into PNR right now... though........ come April 27th you won't be able to pry Lover Mine out of my hands. LOL

Lisarenee | 392 comments I've read four of Lynsay Sands historical novels and the 2 I listed were the ones I liked best thus far. The other two were just okay for me. I figure if there are a lot of books from an author they must be doing something right so I'll try a second unless the first is really bad.

message 49: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Certifiable St. Vinnie's Ninny (last edited Jan 20, 2010 01:55PM) (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments Courtney Milan is a new author that I was very impressed with after reading a short story by her. I got that compelling, irresistible vibe from her hero William in her story in The Heart of Christmas: A Handful of Gold\The Season for Suitors\This Wicked Gift, that I get with LK's heroes. He was to die for. Her first book is Proof by Seduction, which I had to buy after reading her short story.

I worry sometimes that I gave up on an author after one book. Unless it's way too erotic for my tastes or just completely dull as dishwater, or some other issue I can't get past, I usually have a three book requirement before I fire an author.

To be honest, I enjoyed Laura Lee Gurhke's older books. I haven't felt a burning urge to read her newer books although I have a few in the pile.

message 50: by Ally72 (new)

Ally72 | 92 comments Hi Danielle,
I have Proof of Seduction and I am now anxious to read it after hearing you liked the author in that anthology. I am not very good about giving authors second chances with books either. I know you have heard me talk about the Laura Lee Guhrke's latest bachelor girl series and I really love it. I think you might like if you are ever in the mood.
