A memoir
Something educational about history, or things going on in the world that I want to learn more about.
Something lighter, fiction, when I don't want to think too much.
Whatever book my book club is reading
And usually a classic novel, something that I should have read in school... or a book that is considered a must read.
That's usually the way it goes. As I got older, I switched from reading mainly fiction to reading mainly non-fiction. I used to tease my dad for reading all non-fiction because I thought it was boring. But it's not at all, as I soon learned. I do occasionally read YA fiction as well. I'm pretty open. The only thing I don't read is so called beach reads, or mass trade paperbacks for the most part. I try to stick to award winning or critically acclaimed books.

I've broadened my horizons a little this year by searching out some that have appeared on various 'books you must read before you die' lists and so more classics have now started appearing on my shelves. For the most part, I've been very glad to have branched out (only on a couple of occasions have I nearly had an aneurysm trying to struggle valiantly through 'great' works)

I do read adult fiction as well in nearly any genre as long as it is well written. The only thing I have given up on is non-fiction. No matter how interested I may be in a subject I will get two-thirds through a book and leave it unfinished.
I read mostly Paranormal YA books. But, I enjoy anything (except gay books, all those overly romancie books, westerns, poetry, and most Amish books).

I also do my reading in several languages, so, really, I haven't a system or much of a preference. I don't read self-help and empowerment books; I don't read much horror, romance, action or thriller, though I will make an exception for a very well written one. I've lost much of my adolescent taste for epic fantasy. I only read young adult fiction as an occasional indulgence.

I generally stick to YA books - for the most part
