The answer was that since Fatima's father had died and her oldest brother Omar was in the US, her brother Majid was the head of the family. A very religious man, he thought that Fatima, at the age of 16, was ready for marriage, and that their first cousin should have first claim on her. He would not relent even when Fatima threatened suicide so she had no alternative to this marriage.
