Ruth I hope nobody minds if I toot my own horn a little.

The Summer 2008 issue of Rattle, Poetry for the 21st Century, is just out. This handsome issue has a special 60-page full-color section devoted to Visual Poetry. I’m honored that three of my pieces from my series called Readings are included.

In these pieces I combine poetry and images by working on the pages of old books, mostly with watercolors and inks, carving poems from the text that I find there. Here’s a couple example. They're not in Rattle, but they can give you an idea of what I’m doing.

All the Usual

I wish I could tell

This is a print publication, but you can see details of this issue on the Rattle website,
http://www.rattle.com/vispo.htm

My work is not available on the website now, but may turn up sometime in the future as tthey add 5 poems from their back issues each week. The Visual Poetry issue will start to go online in December.

I'm thrilled.

Ruth Thanks, Charissa. It's really been fun. A whole new experience working so small, too.

Thank you, Donald. Do you know Rattle? It's published in LA.

Very cool, Ruth!
But, what's this about killing turtles? That's a very troubling line!

Ruth Thanks Jackie, Willie and KD. Yeah, I hope they don't bust me turtleicide.

Lisa | 127 comments I love it!! So visually pretty, and I love found words more than any other kind of found art. I've done some similar things but never thought to call them poetry. (Though I used scissors and glue, not paint, so I went the easy route.)

I'm inspired to get out some scissors again, because I only wax poetic with scissors, not a pen.

Ruth Thanks, Lisa. I started this by using torn paper quite a bit, now I'm thinking of going back to it and incorporating it with the paint.
