Feel free to discuss any part of our group read, A Kiss Before the Apocalypse in this thread.

SPOILERS ARE TO BE EXPECTED

message 2: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kelly_l) | 21 comments Okay, I'll start this off. :) I picked up Remy last night very late and read a few chapters right off the bat. I picked it up again this morning and right now I'm just starting Chapter 5.

I'm relatively new to this genre of books, so having an angel as a character is kinda cool I think. I like that he can understand animals and I find myself already pulling for him in his quest to be human. I dunno though if I were and angel and wanted to be human...I dunno if I'd want to be a private detective though. Seems like an odd choice for that type of character. BUT, I still love it.

With these books, this genre anyway, it entertains me. I don't think with these books, I just let the author take me where the author wants to take me. This author is doing a good job of it.

I'm not sure about the relationship with his wife. I'm confused with that. At one point, it was noted in the book that people in the "get well place" thought that his wife was his mother. Then later on, she said she had cancer and they were talking about not being able to have children because an angel and a human baby do not make Gerber poster children so they got a dog and then they had a time frame in there. It all wasn't working out right for me so I gave up trying to figure it out and I'm just going with it. That's my only complaint so far.

Oh, I love the cop friend too. He's cool in a tough guy kind of way.

So for now, those are my thoughts on Remy.

Melodie (melodieco) I read this a year ago and loved it. I love his relationship with Marlowe. I wish I understood "dog"! As for his relationship with his wife, he married her some years ago when she was a young woman. He never ages, but she did. The part where they talked about having children was a flashback. She's now gotten old and is sick and is in what is basically a nursing home. Everyone there thinks she's his mother, but he doesn't see the old sick woman when he looks at her. To him she's still his Madeline.

Kelly (kelly_l) | 21 comments Well, Remy is a done deal and I just ordered the next two Remy books. I really enjoyed this book. My favorite character in here was absolutely Francis. I had some serious laugh out loud moments with him. I love Marlowe too, who wouldn't? I laughed over Casey's cat. Yanno, every single character was just great. This was one of those books that you read really fast because you can't stop reading and you just have to know what happens next. I was so happy today at a doctor's appointment that I ended up waiting a LONG time for and I had Remy with me to keep me company.

Whomever recommended this book? Excellent taste!

Melodie (melodieco) I've been suggesting this for group reads on every UF board I post on for a year now. Glad one group finally picked it!

message 6: by Jess (new)

Jess I started reading this one yesterday. My Kindle says that I am at 43%, which is somewhere in chapter nine.

So far I’ve been a little bored. All that’s really happened is Remey getting attacked and beat up by someone that can control the dark. I felt that the best friend relationship with Mulvehill seemed very weak. Mulvehill has a normal chair that he sits in on Remey’s roof and is good friends with the dog Marlowe, yet he doesn’t know that Remey won’t be taking him (Mulvehill) to heaven. He has to ask?? This is Remey’s best friend, the only person other than Madaline, his wife that he can talk to about what he is. I just felt that this relationship seemed weak and it was distracting.

message 7: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kelly_l) | 21 comments I dunno Jess...I took the relationship with Mulvehill to be a "human" friend. Even though he knows Remy's true identity, he doesn't KNOW. I just really let the author take me where he wanted and I ended up enjoying. I mean, I had things I would want Marlowe to say or do in *my* doggie world, but this was Remy's. There are a lot of good characters in this book so hopefully you find one that you end up liking.

I finished this today. I'm glad it was picked as a group read otherwise I probably wouldn't have got to it for a long time. It was really good.

I liked the hiearchy of angels and the differences between them all - including those of the fallen.

I think that Remy is a very likable character and I was actually all choked up during the Epilogue... so sweet. His relationship with his wife was very touching and I love that we got a glimpse of it later on in her life - when the age difference seemed so much greater.

My only problem with the book was that God seemed to be such a mean character. I can't think of any books I've read where God is actually a character - and while he was absent in the book his character was definately a part of the story if only in mentioning him.

Kelly - I absolutely agree - My favorite character was Francis as well. I loved that he drank coffee grown in Hell! LOL!

Lily (lilithesque) I tried to read this book a while back and was unable to bring myself to finish it. It wasn't bad, I just never thought it was interestng. I tried to force myself, because I had heard some good buzz, but Remy was just not interesting to me.

Maybe if I had gotten further in...but no, I just didnt' care. It was sad to see his wife failing, and the cop who he saved should have been compellng, but not for me, and the talking dog just didn't hit the spot.

Truely though, I have heard great things from great people about it, so enjoy and I will jump off this thread. I dont wanna be a spoiler.

I finished the 2nd book today Lily and I felt the same way. There was nothing really "wrong" with it but it just didn't grab me like I had hoped.

Julia | 119 comments Now I finished Where Angels Fear to Tread book #3 yesterday. I loved it! I guess that's why there's chocolate, vanilla and all the other flavors.

I love Remy, too! Read #3 a month or so ago and really enjoyed it. Interesting how these biblical figures turn up!

I think my problem with #2 was I read it in between Harry Dresden books. Probably a little too similar. I definetly plan on reading #3 but I think I'll wait until Harry is all caught up first... because really, not many PI's can compete with Harry in my book :)

LOVED the new Harry, Changes (The Dresden Files, #12) by Jim Butcher . Some heavy s**t going on!

message 15: by Lily (new)

Lily (lilithesque) I am still 41 on waitLIst for Changes.

Julia | 119 comments Aaahhh... Shanon reading Dancing on the Head of a Pin between Harry Dresden books does sound like it could be a problem. A suggestion? Read someRaymond Chandler. Go to the source. Butcher and Sniegoski get a lot from him! Well, not the wizards, angels, and others...

And I agree completely about Changes Melodie!

Thanks Julia. My library has a couple of books available for downloading that I've been thinking about trying. I'll definetly check one out.
