Time Travel discussion

Many years ago I read a time travel book in which the characters leap (sometimes inadvertently) through time, leaving metallic statues behind.

Nostalgia is now pressing me to find it again. Can anyone help me with the title and author please?

PS I think there were metallic statues on the front cover.
