Elizabeth☮ i'd like to start a list of books that all people should read at least once.

give one book title and explain why you think it should be read. what is its literary value? what about themematic connections to life? consider whether it is timeless.

my book: Watership Down by Richard Adams

adams creates a world that is for rabbits, but mirrors our own. it is about survival and overcoming environmental woes (both natural and man-made). he makes you become totally invested in the life of these rabbits and you won't want to quit reading.

let's hear your recommendations!

Julie S. I think that there's a list about this, but I'll add my input. I think that everyone should read 1984.

Pat aka Tygyr (tygyr) "The Help" is a must read. If my Book Club had not suggested it I would have missed this great book! It is about the South and the slaves and their masters. One brave young woman decides to write the stories of the black women. The fear of the black women and even of the author. Very eye opening.

Rosalie Sambuco | 25 comments I agree The Help by Kathryn Stockett should be read by everyone. It is a tremendous book.
I will also suggest everyone read Every Man Dies Alone by Hans Fallada a wonderful story about WW II.

I absolutely agree with you on The Help. It was awesome. I saw it recommended highly on GoodReads. I probably not would have picked that up without seeing all the high praise!

KSMary The Help is about domestic help in the South and their employers not slaves and masters. More like the hired help in Driving Miss Daisy but more realistic. I agree that it was one of the best books of 2010 that I read.
