Becca (paperchase) | 2 comments Hi Jen,

I'm pretty new to GR and i have a question that isn't really related to the group but I wanted to ask someone who knows the ropes :). How come you can only rate a book to whole numbers? I've just read a book and would definatley give it a 3 1/2 star rating but obviously cannot do it, any ideas why the books are rated this way? Sorry, I know this is soooo not the right place for the question but once somethings irritated me I kinda have to just find out more information form a superior source, Thank you regardless

Becca

message 3: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) You can't rate it any other ways except whole numbers. I recommend it a book is 3.5 stars, you rate it four stars, that's what most people do and before you write your review. write **3.5 stars**

message 4: by Sondrae (new)

Sondrae Bennett It's possible I'm just being stupid but I can't seem to find the books for March group reads or the poll for April group reads. Where should I be looking?

Jen is absent. If she isn't back I'll just post up the MArch group reads. I usually do these kinda things for her when she;s gone. There should be a nomination thread fro April. I'll check.

message 6: by Sondrae (new)

Sondrae Bennett Thanks Mariya! I see they've gone up today anyway but I appreciate the response!

Mis_Reading (tenoko1) In the book related chat> What are you reading?, Rather than having on generic What are you reading, why not do one for monthly? It's what we do over at BOTN, and I suppose it makes it easier to keep tabs on everybody, what's good, what RECENT, etc. The first of every month a new one opens "What are you reading? Feb 2011" or some such. Then again, in a lot of these groups, ppl are more interested in playing word games than actually discussing books, so maybe it would be in vain.

EDIT: Actually, more Mod involvement to try and help people get more involved would be a good start, i suppose. I mean, people are apart of the group, but we're very much singular too. Back to the "What are you reading" bit, every entry is simply people posting what they are reading, there is no conversation and questions like "Oh so-and-so, i see you just read such-and-such. Is it any good? What about for someone my age? or my twelve year old?" I mean, we're here, but not really. I guess that's my main beef. you can't really make friends on here because no one is really involved, unless you're playing game or something.

I agree with Mariya. You go a 1/2 point above what you would give it, and then clarify in the beginning of your review, typically using HTML to make it bold so it stands out. ^_^ And btw, any questions, feel free to ask, if I don't know, we'll figure it out together, lol.

message 9: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vsquared) | 5 comments Is it possible to add categorized shelves to the bookshelf? I know that tagging books can be very subjective, but I think this will give new and current members the ability to find book recommendations easier and faster. Threads could then be used for more in-depth book information. If needed, I would volunteer my services, to help with the creating and categorizing of shelves and books.

message 10: by Miri (last edited Jan 11, 2012 12:12AM) (new)

Miri (miriamarosen) Hi, but just wondering if the all the 2011 book nomination threads can be deleted to minimize the endless scrolling down I'm having to do.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments That's a great idea. I'm on it.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Can we create a chat thread? We seem to get out of topic on the game threads and other areas?

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments I was just thinking we could use a thread like that.

Here's the link.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Shera!

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Yep, let me know if there's anything else. I've gotten distracted and have started to edit the folders and topics.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

You are fine Shera. Don't worry. You get back to us whenever you can. You have a lot of members. :)

message 17: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jnhart) I can't seem to figure out how to put a checkmark in my posts. I have seen it done in other people's posts before. Anyone know how?

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Let me research it. I've noticed others doing it and thought they were just inserting images.

I'll check if there is a code that people are using.

message 19: by Lena (new)

Lena (lenaelika) | 4 comments Hello. I like this group, and I'd like to be more active, but book lists for month read polls are always soo long! I just can't choose what to vote for, and if I choose, that book never wins ((

I understand that you ask all members for suggestions, but maybe you can find a way to shorten the final lists, because it's difficult and discouraging to read about all those books, choose which you like and at the end never get it, so why bother?!

I think it's one of reasons why you get only about 200 votes for a poll in a group of 5000 members and as a result "monthly group reads" section is quite slack. In my opinion, 7 books for each list is maximum.

Hi Lena, thank you for your thoughts. I'll discus this with Shera see what we can come up with!

I totally understand Lena. I've gotten bummed out about certain books not making it either, plus it is hard to vote for all those goodies.

message 22: by Terri (new)

Terri | 247 comments Just a thought..... as I was reading through numerous group discussions I was wondering why some have not been deleted even though it has been almost a year since it was posted on or even in some cases over a year. I think that they are a bit irrelevent if nobody has taken the time to post on them in so long. But just my opinion.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments You're right Terri. I've been going through them slowly and deleting them. I went through a while ago and did a huge deleting spree, took me about 2-3 weeks.

I'll step it up, they've been starting to annoy me too.

message 24: by Terri (new)

Terri | 247 comments Good to know, and thanks! lol Good Luck!

message 27: by Marie (new)

Marie (acheron1981) | 133 comments hey guys is there any easy way to put a book to be read in my profile if someone has reccommended a good one without having to go to main screen and type it in. Can i click on the book name in the discussion and add from there ? sorry im new :-)

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments No problem. If the link is there all you need to do is click on it and it will take you to the books "page" and you can add it from there. If you don't want to leave the chat to go to the book when you're left clicking on your mouse either hit shift or Ctrl button at the same time and it will open up a new page.

Jen. I loved the cyber cake, it kept me going.

message 29: by Shauna (new)

Shauna V | 4 comments I have been a very bad GoodReads member . Not entering all the books I've read...I am the Guru of an entire freaking paranormal SERIES on GetGlue, for cryin out loud - the 1st of which I saw recommended on HERE. Oooooh, shame on me. But I will be better! In fact, just bought Wicked Nights & am as giddy as a 5 yr old on Christmas Eve to read it w y'all! Real quick question for the tribe elders: How does the read-along go? I read really fast, but don't retain for overly long. How long after the start date can I expect phase 2? Do we talk as we go? What? Tell me, tell me, tell me... :P

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments It's basically a free for all. For that month's read you can start it or chat about it at anytime. So if you read faster feel free to start posting what you thought about it whenever you want.

Post as you read, post after you read, whatever!!

Just make sure you use spoiler tags.

Copy this one ✔

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) For the book of the month, in addition to debut, whatever and group series read — any chance there could be a separate Young Adult read?

I realize YA has a huge selection of paranormal books and is not necessarily just for one age group. But, would be nice to keep it by itself. I keep seeing lots of YA on polls, nominations, threads, etc. It's a large enough category can be by itself. Could also ease the number of nominations to vote for on polls by breaking some off into a poll on their own.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Good suggestion Deborah. Jen and I will mull it over. We've been playing around with some new ideas for group reads.

Or in other operating systems and browsers, you might try to right-click to get a menu to open book in new tab/window. On a lot of touchscreen devices (including iPads), hold (press down continuously) on the book image/link to get to menu to open in new tab.

Nyssa Suggestion:

I'm wondering if we could please have a "Upcoming" section for our reading selections as done by the group Beyond Reality?

I think its a great reference point.

Thanks. :)

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments We were voting so that's why it wasn't up.

message 38: by Sharmini (new)

Sharmini Jesudas (sharjesu) Hello, my dear and fellow Bibliophiles :)

I had a question to which I was hoping someone would have ananswer. If I had a book recommendation, where would I post it?

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments You go can go here to ask for recommendations, or to post them on someone's request.

Recommendations wanted!!

Or you can post about books you really liked here:
What are you reading?
or here:
Recommend a book/series

Hope that helps.

Nae (nae28) | 31 comments Hi guys,
I thought I had signed up for 2013 A-Z title challange, is the thread around somewhere? or am I going a bit more crazy?
Thanks :)

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments There really isn't a thread for it. However, you can comment in the chanllenge's threads.

Here: http://www.goodreads.com/challenges/1...

Heaps of thanks :)

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Glad to help!

message 44: by Rachael (new)

Rachael | 5 comments Okay, maybe I am really slow. Okay so I am but that's not the point. I have been reading books for the Challenges and putting them on the shelves I created for the Challenges but it still shows that I have not read anything for my challenge. Also I signed up to to the Characters A-Z and I was able to do the first list in my comments but I can seem to add and it seems silly to keep re-posting the whole list every time. Okay so the questions are: How can I add a book to the Challenge Goals and How do I add a character to my list that I have already posted?

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Oh, all right Rachael I see.

Let's use you're current Message 44 as an example. Say you wanted to add something to it or edit it. Down in the right bottom corner there are:

Click on edit and you can change your comment as manny times as you like.

Priscilla (ppomeroy72) | 364 comments What is the group challenge for March?

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Sorry, it looks like it's not up yet . . . I'll get on that! ^_-

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

I wanted to know if this was just my problem or if others are having this problem also, but if you click on the "Spoiler" link to view what's under the cut, what is supposed to happen? Nothing happens when I click on it.

message 49: by Angie (new)

Angie (angieb1978) | 146 comments I have that problem too, Fallon.

message 50: by MadameZelda (new)

MadameZelda I was lucky to figure out those htmls by trial and error.

but how does one link a challenge widget? I can't find anything.

The best I could do was delete all my Goodreads personal profile and type instructions on how to find a book challenge using ctrl- f and names of the topics. I kind of like it now with all my personal info gone though!
