Happy rainy Thursday to you all!
In memory of Lost today, I thought I would start a reading challenge to help us while away the days until Lost returns to us early next year.

I am posting below all the Literature linked to Lost. If you are interested, create a thread in this folder with your name and start date, and throughout the summer and fall, as you read a book from the list, post it to your thread. If its been awhile since you've read one, it might be fun to reread it before you add it to your thread.....

Let's see if anyone can complete the list before the new season airs.

Anyone with me?

Lorena (lorenalilian) | 148 comments For a few seconds I thought, Oh my goodness, I haven't read any of these!!!! LOL But I have... a couple.

So do we post comments in each other's lists? Do we get recommendations for books on the master list? Are these all the titles? Why Lori do you take it upon yourself to make my to-read list so long? ;o)

message 3: by Lori, Offical Lost Lover and Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod
Lorena, thanks for joining the challenge!! It should be interesting to see how far we can get through the list.

There are quite a few I have already looked at and figured I wouldnt be reading ( the Bible, the holy Qur'an,I Ching, Harry Potter, The Fountianhead) and there is one on there that actually doesnt exist!! Hee hee... I only realised that today tho, and I am leaving it on the list. Can anyone figure it out??!

message 4: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 149 comments Lori, are you referring to the manuscript that they found on the plane? I think it actually has been released, if not in physical form then as an e-book. I remember reading something like that a while back. I can't remember the name of it though.

It's kind of funny- I'd never have expected an in-universe book to make such a transition into the real world, but Lost fans know no limits.

message 5: by Lorena (last edited Jun 05, 2008 09:40AM) (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) | 148 comments I have a few of these on my to-read bookshelf at home, the fountainhead is one of them, so I am guessing I would start with those, after reading The thirteenth tale -for our GR's group- and Blindness -for my neighborhood's bookclub- and calico Bush -our nighly reading with Gabi-

I had been wondering about joining the 1001 books challenge but I better forget about that until my kid goes to college!

message 6: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 149 comments Yep, I was right. It was the Bad Twin.

http://lostpedia.com/wiki/Bad_Twin

message 7: by Lori, Offical Lost Lover and Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod
Logan, are you referring to Bad Twin? Yeah they actually made that into a real novel (how weird, huh?) But that was not the one I am talking about. These lost writers are Sneaky.... let me tell you!! hee hee

Lorena, I havent checked out the 1001 books challenge yet. sounds like a BIG commitment!!
:D

message 8: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 332 comments I have Margaret and Narnia, this is going to take awhile...

message 9: by Lorena (last edited Jun 05, 2008 11:24AM) (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) | 148 comments Emma, yeah a year is probably not enough time to read these 60 and my other commintments but its always fun to play along and specially to hear the reviews of our fellow readers. Not to mention the connetions we could discover! That is, if the creators put as much thought into these titles as we have LOL ... wouldn't it bummed if ther books were just props, not realted to the story ...

message 10: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 332 comments I have so many other to-reads I don't know if I'll get through it. I'm eager to see all the connections, and if we can find anything related to the future of Lost.

message 11: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) | 148 comments Lori, I have been reading some of the posts of the group here in GR -1001 books you must read before you die- and it does sound a bit overwhelming, I am sure you have read many of their titles, and if the list is representative of an international literary community I should have too, I am just going to have to check the full list, see what I have read and what sounds interesting.

message 12: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 332 comments Lorena, I would be afraid, very, very afraid, to even dare to look at that list. I have so many to-reads swirling inside my head and on GR, I think I will go crazy. My goal right now is to finish all of my current to reads, (that's right, 51 more books) before the year ends. Oh no, just realized I need to add Ann of Green Gables, The Secret Garden, and The Wizard of Oz, I'll never get through my to-reads NEVER!!

message 13: by Lori, Offical Lost Lover and Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod
Emma ---The few novels that i have read already that are on the Lost Lit List have been related somewhat, so I see no reason for the others to not follow suit as well.

Mysterious Island seems to have alot of its story pulled out in the making of Lost. 5 guys and a dog crash land a balloon onto an uninhabited island (hello Vincent, hello Henry Gale). There is a highly trainable ape named Jupe(in the lost expierence, which i never participated in, they had a super old super smart ape by the name of Joop). There are strange things going on that they try to uncover...

Lord Of The Flies... well, besides it being about children, it fits quite well with the whole two seperate societies, one looking to get off the island and in the meantime, work at survival and live in peace, the other group having resigned themselves to being on the island for life start kidnapping or killing off the ones that wont join them.

ect..ect...

message 14: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 332 comments No, I mean the 1001 books to read before you die, I think this list is a fantastic idea.

message 15: by Lori, Offical Lost Lover and Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod
Lorena, I went to the group for the 1001 books, and saw the newly posted updated list for 2008... I am ashamed to say I dont think Ive read any of them, and dont even recognize that many.. how sad is that? Guess the novels I choose to read are not good enough (tsk tsk) haa haa.... I will have to go back and really look into some of those, but wow, what a huge list!!

message 16: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I know I'll never get through this list but there are some books that are already on my to read list so I'll give it a try and see how many I manage.I like the idea that this book list can enhance my Lost addiction!

message 17: by Lori, Offical Lost Lover and Super Mod (last edited Jun 05, 2008 02:46PM) (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod
Sherry, on your Lost lit List you were wondering what the connection of To Kill A Mockingbird to the show was? I think it is only that Juliet pretended to show Jack the movie version when she made that video of her with the cards telling him to not trust Ben... when Jack was locked in the dharma station.... I checked Lostpedia and that is all they said about it.

message 18: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 149 comments Lori and Lorena, the 1001 books challenge was the first one that I started when I joined Goodreads. You can find the list here:

http://johnandsheena.co.uk/books/?pag...

At this time I've only read 125 of them- I'm counting Infinite Jest, even though I haven't finished it yet. Truthfully, I never really plan on finishing all 1001- especially because there's just so much Margaret Atwood.

message 19: by Lori, Offical Lost Lover and Super Mod (last edited Jun 05, 2008 03:48PM) (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod
Wow, ok, I just downloaded it and I have to say that I am thrilled that Jose Saramago made it on there with The Double... however, I feel that Blindness was much better!! And Jules Verne with Journey tt Center ot Earth!!

Ive read about 20 (i stopped before getting to the 1700's... i dont think ive read anything that old) I saw alot of authors who ive read, but just hadnt read the one on the list... Guess my tastes are different from those who compiled that list.

BTW,did you see that is tells you how many books you need to read a year to complete it before you die?? MEN... you better get cracking, since it thinks you are going to die quicker.. heehee

message 20: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Lol

message 21: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Goodness I've only read 22 and nothing from this decade!Even if I read what's currently in my to be read pile I still would have a long long ways to go.Looking at the list there's quite a few I'd never bother with but it's nice to work with to compile my own list which is what I've been doing.

message 22: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) | 148 comments LOL ...

message 23: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) | 148 comments Ok, I did the thing, I have read 15 books out of this list and have a couple of the rest on my to-read shelf at home, I saw many books that I have always wanted to read also and that are on my wish list, which is soooooo long. However I must say I am a little dissapointed about some books that I was sure I was going to find there that I didn't, specially from South American Authors... tsk, tsk

message 24: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 149 comments Lorena, that's my main criticism of the list as well. Apparently there's a new edition of the book which offers a more international flavor. There's a topic over in the 1001 Books group that has all of the new additions. I was pleased to find Roberto Bolano there along with dozens of authors I have never heard of- which is kind of like Christmas for me.

Yelena is the only one I know making a dedicated push for all 1001, and she's making strong headway through the list. I think she went back and added all the new additions to her copy of the spreadsheet and it came out to be somewhere around 1300 books total.

message 25: by Lori, Offical Lost Lover and Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod
Not to change the topic, but has anyone in here read The Brothers Karamazov? I bought it tonite while the kids and I were shopping in the mall, and its scary big. 1045 pages... i think this may be the longest novel i have purchased in at least 10 years.... maybe longer... it seems like a huge commitment!

message 26: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) | 148 comments Logan, I will look for that post and add the titles to my sheet too, its a good starting pointing when looking for ideas before buying classics. I do hope Maria, Jorge Isaacs, La Celestina, Fernando Rojas y la Voragine Jose Eustacio Rivera are there among others, they are great novels that everyone should read. Any titles you didn't see there you were sure to find?

Lori, I remember taking The Count of Montecristo home a couple of years back and thinking I had become insane, it was such a huge undertaking, now I am glad I did, please let me know how the book turns out. Sometimes the stories grab you in such way that you just fly through!

message 27: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 149 comments Lori, 1045 pages? That is massive! My mass market copy is only 749 pages but is definitely unabridged. I wonder where your extra 300 pages come from, is it annotated or something? Either way, I'll read it along with you if you need moral support. I've been intending to read it for years now. I think I marked it as one of my summer challenges over in the other group. The book's been lingering on my to-read stack for too long and I am madly in love with Dostoevsky. To not have read one of his seminal works is a crime.

Lorena, I'll have to look through the updated list to see what stood out for me. I only gave it a cursory read-through when it was first posted. I have to admit that I was surprised to find Line of Beauty on the expanded list. I read it last summer and was just not impressed by it. It struck me as a book along the lines of what Jane Austen would write if she were a foppish dandy living among the well-to-do in Thatcherite London. For some that's probably a good thing, but is definitely not a topic that interests me at all.

message 28: by Lori, Offical Lost Lover and Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod
Logan, i have a small paperback version by Bantam .. all 1045 pages are strickly novel. I went back and rechecked... weird huh? I am currently reading metamorphasis, which appears to be only 55 pages long (the rest of the novel is all text references and essays on Kakfa and the novel)so it shouldnt take me long to finish... and would love to have someone read 'Brothers" along with me.... it is going to be my first novel from him, and I am sure I am going to need to bounce stuff off onto someone....

I just got back from a library sale (quite unexpectedly, i just happened to be driving by and saw it!!) and managed to buy myself 4 books off the Lost Lit List... (among other things as well)

a quick 1/2 hour browse landed me:
Alices Adventures in Wonderland - Carroll
Heart Of Darkness- Conrad
Of Mice and Men - Steinbeck
The Pearl - Steinbeck

Looks like its a summer of classics and Lost lit for this bookaddict!!

message 30: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 332 comments lol, How many books are on the Lost Lit List anyways?

message 31: by Lori, Offical Lost Lover and Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod
check the first post on this thread. i listed them all......

message 32: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 332 comments Oh 63, that wouldn't be a lot, if I didn't have other goals.

message 33: by Lori, Offical Lost Lover and Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod
I dont plan on reading them all... some dont even interest me really. But It's a great way to gain some insight, especially if you pick the ones that are obviously related... Some i think are only linked to it becuase the writers used the novel title as an episode title.

message 34: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Hey, Lori - which ones would you say were the more closely connected books? I'd be interested in reading those, anything to get a little insight into this mind boggling show!

message 35: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 332 comments And what are your favorites, I'd be very interested to see everyones favorites and compare them.

message 36: by Lori, Offical Lost Lover and Super Mod (last edited Jun 08, 2008 07:49PM) (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod
well so far, out of the ones Ive read....
Lord of the Flies and Mysterious Island are the two most closely related. Alot of what we see on Lost can be laid out side by side with these novels.

Island and VALIS were just horrible to read. Islands plot was interesting and relates to lost in the sense that here was an island that people were migrating to leave all new technology behind, live in peace, one with the island.. and that there were others out there who wanted access to it, to exploit it and make money off it. VALIS was just terrible, and didnt really have much to do with the show. It was just about a messed up psychotic who was searching for god, who he thought was an alien lifeform/sattelite that shoots information to his brain from a pink lazer beam (huh?)

Third Policeman was a trippy little novel that hooks you but confuses the hell out of you too. I dont want to give anything away here incase someone wants to read it, but towards the end, there is an underground building that is more like a room, and this room can produce whatever it is that you want, if you only think it. Sorta like Bens magic box.

message 37: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Thanks, Lori. I've read Lord of the Flies years and years ago but will have to revisit it and I'll add Mysterious Island to my list.

message 38: by Lori, Offical Lost Lover and Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod
Mysterious Island is by far my most favorite of all the ones ive read from the list so far. LOTF was a reread for me too... i had read it in HS but reading it this time was like reading it for the first time, especially paying attn to lost-like stuff :)

message 39: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Lori,I'm unfamiliar with Pearl by Steinbeck. What's it about?

I think King's The Stand is very relatable in terms of 2 groups, one good, one evil, also how to survive when everything you know is drastically changed.I see The Stand in a lot of how the Lost members organize themselves in such difficult circumstances as well as in how there is focus on several members. Rather than one hero there are many.

It's my favourite book off the list.

message 40: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I'm adding The Stand to my list now as well, thanks, Sherry!

message 41: by Lori, Offical Lost Lover and Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod

Sherry, I havent read it yet, but here is a short synopsis I stole from a goodreads reviewer...

A young fisherman discovers a large pearl. Believing the pearl will afford him great wealth, he dreams of a better future for his young family. Society, however, gets in the way of his plans and he is forced to flee until a tragic event leads him to conclude that the pearl does more harm than good.

message 42: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Hmmm, sounds interesting. Please let me know what you think.Might be worth adding to my ever expanding wishlist.

message 43: by Nanner (new)

Nanner | 45 comments over the years I've read almost all of these...but to tell the truth I really don't remember them enough to post a rating so I'm going to try and re-read them :) hows that for ambition?
This is an awesome reading list..I homeschool and I've had my son read 5 of these ..its makes for a wonderful education...many more are on his reading list :)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod
I chose to reread a few of the ones I had previously read as well, seeing as how its been years since Ive picked them up, and now I am curious to see what the lost links could be... reading it through "lost glasses" should make them more interesting the second time around, i would imagine. Thanks for Joining :)

message 45: by Nanner (new)

Nanner | 45 comments Yes I can't wait to read thru "Lost" glasses...really if it weren't for that I probably wouldn't bother, it would seem too boring

message 46: by Nanner (new)

Nanner | 45 comments sherry that sounds a little like the numbers for hurley? but thats not having read it at all

message 47: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Nanner, are you referring to The Pearl? It does sound a lot like Hurley's numbers and lottery win.See,we've benefitted already and haven't even read the book!

message 48: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 332 comments Hey Nanner! Welcome! I was wondering, have you read The Teenage Liberation Handbook? It's a must-read.

message 49: by Lori, Offical Lost Lover and Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 880 comments Mod
Hey now, Sherry/ Nanner... you are totally making me want to drop my current read and start reading The Pearl now.... I never even put those two things together... nuts! I am starting to feel like I am having 'connection' problems as of late..a-haa haa haa.

message 50: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 149 comments Emma, I loved the Teenage Liberation Handbook! When I was in high school I ended up buying so many copies for friends of mine that dropped out. I sent one to my little brother not six months ago, he's in the midst of dropping out.. It's always good to be reminded that schooling does not equal education and that one can learn far more when you get to pursue your own interests rather than the state's curriculum.
