June 7, 1893 marks the date of Gandhi's first act of civil disobedience. In memory of this event...
A.Read a novel that takes place in India (EXAMPLE: The God of Small Things), OR written by an author who was born in India (EXAMPLE: Aravind Adiga) , OR a non-fictional book about the country (EXAMPLE: In Spite of the Gods: The Strange Rise of Modern India)
AND
B. Tell us about something you would like to change about the country/state/city where you live and what you have done or would do to see it changed.

If you need suggestions OR have suggestions for books to read for this task post them here.

Only part of it takes place in India (maybe 1/3?) and the author was not born in India. Typically, if less than half of a book takes place in the required location, it can't be used. Cynthia will have to weigh in on this.

message 8: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1332 comments It should take place primarily in India.

Leigh Ann (leighannflyingonsilverwings) Beauty's Release takes place in India, but be warned, it is serious erotica.

The Twentieth Wife has gotten good reviews. That's what I plan to read.

I thought these also sounded good:
A Breath of Fresh Air
The God of Small Things
Shantaram - I would love to read this one, but it's quite long, & I already have a lot of long books on my list.

I've checked out The Mango Season from the library. I haven't read it yet, but it looks interesting.

Try a book by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni I have a feeling you'd enjoy her work. Sister of My Heart or Arranged Marriage: Stories might well be just your cup of gheer. =)
