Much more than anyone should want to know about Prohibition. However, it is enlightening how religious zealots and their crazy and opportunistic camp following politicians can capture the Constitution and the Republic.
It might make a more interesting script for the PBS program coming up soon. I'll watch because Ken Burns knows how to present this kind of material better than this author.

Mexico wasn't even in the index.
It made me want to check other sources to see what went on along the Mexican border.

As a religious person, I want to point out that we're not all zealots. The women who started the temperance movement had a reasonable cause. They didn't want their husbands spending all the family's money on alcohol, coming home drunk, and beating them and their kids. The trouble was that they aligned themselves with the KKK. . .

You betcha. But one thing to consider is that the medical marijuana exemption, while reasonable, is probably being abused just like medicinal alcohol was then with doctors and dentists prescribing whiskey left and right.
