message 1: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (smackley) so i was wondering how i would count the sherlock holmes stories. should i count them as the adventures of sherlock holmes, the memoirs of sherlock holmes, and the return of sherlock holmes. OR should i count each case as a story for ex. the adventure of the speckled band... please help! i need some opinions!

Sherry (wstridgerunner) That's a hard one Stephanie.....if the stories are under 1 binding then I would count them as 1; if there are selected stories under another binding; I would count them as a separate book. Depending on whick publication you have. Now thats just me though.

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) I agree with Sherry. When I read books like that, if they are in one volume, I count it as one book. But if I read them separately, I count them as individual books.

LynnB I count by number of volumes, too.

message 5: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) what I would say is

any of those that have been published as a single entity on their own would count as one.

message 6: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (stacieh) | 247 comments I count each separately if the original works were first published as stand alone Novels/Novellas (as in omnibus editions... The Lord of The Rings omnibus counts as three books, the Chronicles of Narnia omnibus counts as seven, etc.). If the original works were first published as short stories or serials (or poetry) then I count the edition collecting them as a single book. In the case of Holmes, since most of the stories were serialized I personally would count them by their anthology compilation (Adventures..., Memoirs..., Return... etc.). Just my opinion and the neat thing about this group is you are free to do whatever you think is best.

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) If they are all in one binding I would count as one book. That's what I do.

I suppose in that case you should count as 3

LynnB Since this isn't a life or death situation, and it's really just your own conscience that matters in this case, I'd call it what you are comfortable calling it. If you don't feel guilty about it, then it's okay.

message 13: by Sherry (new)

Sherry (wstridgerunner) I agree with LynnB.....pick an option that you can live with; it's a good question though....since it's your list, you get to make the rules :D

Stephanie (smackley) well i think im going to go with four. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Shelock Holmes, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, and The Hounds of the Bakervilles. i found copies of these four individual books and they're all just about a memium sized novella except for The Hounds of the Bakervilles which is a large novel. thanks for posting your opinion!
