Read After Your Bedtime Books discussion

Hey everyone I just wanted you all to know that I will be starting a buddy read. In my other groups a buddy read is where instead of having a whole bunch of people read a book at once and discuss it a anyone who wants to does, which usually isn't the whole group. So if anyone wants to join our buddy read for The Host feel free! There will be some reading assighnments and dates when we'll talk about them. Happy Reading!

Well we can start today if you want! I'm looking for an excuse to get out of studying for exams. So you tell me how far you want to read and when we should post questions, basically what works for you.

Well I told Elyssa that I would catch up to her, and she's on like page 175. That chapter ends on page 180. So I was thinking:

Read Prologue - chpt. 9 (pages 1 - 91)
Then post questions. Or post questions/discuss as we read. :)

hey kate i saw your post on the GR discussion board about the goose girl and heist society....i think it would be a great buddie read 2 btw just let me know if you want to do that sometime :)

We should! Really soon. I have The Heist Society, so we could start that soon. The only thing is I have exams this week and Thurs. are last day. Then I've got about a week before my family goes up north with no internet access, well, unless you break into someones house but I don't think I'll be trying that. But I do have a little over a week in between my ending of school and my vacation. If that works for you we could try for that week. If not I'm free all summer after my vacation. I'll start a topic for it!

Yup, Z is right. I'm about the 175 page mark. I'll answer questions if you post them. But I am rather too busy to go back and look for questions at the moment.

Oh, sorry Zakiya. Well I may not be able to post any questions today since I have three different buddy reads to catch up on. But I'm sure you and Elyssa will get way ahead of me anyway. So you all can post questions because you might have to wait a day or two for mine. But I'm racing to catch up!

LOL! It's okay! I wasn't sure of how far you were in TH. Is 90 pages everyday okay for you? Or should I bring it down to 70 so you have a little more time to catch up?

Questions for Prologue - Chpt. 9:

1. Wanderer feels foreign in Melanie's body at first. Have you ever felt out of place somewhere before?

2. Melanie is resisting Wanderer's takeover of her body. Do you believe that Melanie will be able to overcome W's efforts to push her away?

3. Wanderer tells Melanie that it is her duty to tell a figure of authority (supposedly a Seeker) about Mel being able to conversate with her. How do you think Melanie felt about this, when she knew how Wanderer was starting to feel about Jared and Jamie?

4. Predict whether you think Wanderer and Melanie will find Jared and Jamie; in your prediction, will they still be human?

5. Wanderer is going to see her original Healer, Fords Deep Waters. Do you think she will ask to be seperated from Melanie's body for the Seeker to take it?

Answers for Prologue - Chpt. 9:

1. I have felt out of place a few times before, particularly when I start at a new school and don't know a lot of people. So that would mean: at the beginning of Kindergarten, the beginning of 5th grade, the beginning of 6th grade, and the beginning of 7th grade.

2. Mel might be able to takeover once again, but I don't think she will try if Wanderer helps her find Jared and Jamie. And does anything else she (M) wants her (W) to do.

3. Melanie is probably skeptical and doesn't know if she can trust Wanderer yet. Then again, Melanie probably believes that W help her as much as possible.

4. I think that Melanie and Wanderer will find Jared and Jamie. In my prediction, they will still be human.

5. I don't think Wanderer will even go to the Healer (then again, I started chpt 10). She will probably just settle for finding the people she now loves, Jared and Jamie, of course.

Read chpts. 19-21, pages 181-212

Questions for Chpts. 10-18:

1. In chapter 12, when Wanderer notices that she is out of food and water, she almost can't even move. Then Melanie helps her by spreading her strength and energy throughout their body. Do you think she Mel did this because she wanted see Jared and Jamie badly, or because she really cared abouyt Wanderer and wanted to help?

2. When Jeb finds W and M, they are sure that a coyote has finally come to rip them apart. Then Jeb leaves and brings back some of the humans that live with him. Before they were found, Melanie and Wanderer were ready to accept death. If your life took a heartbreaking turn like this, would you be to so easily invite death?

3. Jared is very stubborn about believing that Wanderer was trying to bring Seekers to them. Even Ian thinks that Wanderer is telling the truth, and he now feels guilty for choking her. What are your feelings about this? (This actually makes more sense after you read chpt. 19. :))

4. Jamie is still alive, and he's all grown up!! He's not afraid to openly talk with W about Melanie and her past lives. He can even almost touch her--without wanting to hurt her. Is that courage and bravery (and love for his sister) or what??

Answers to my Qs for 10-18:

1. I think it was a little bit of both. Melanie wanted to see J and J really badly, but she also, by this time, really cared for Wanderer. So of course she was going to do everything she could to help their situation.

2. If my life had been in their situation or something very similar to it, I would probably be pretty acepting of death. I mean, hey, everyone has to leave the Earth sooner or later. So when your time comes, you should invite it and know that you've lived a good life. :) My opinion of course

3. I think that Jared is just grieving about Melanie getting caught to really concentrate and focus on what Wanderer tells him about how she got there. He is being a little stubborn and won't listen to anyone else without being angry. He needs to just take a long nap and think about everything; grab ahold of himself and accept that Melanie he once knew is gone and she shares a body with a soul.

4. Jamie is being really strong around everyone. He wants to show that he can handle this like a man, but isn't afraid to show that he wants what best for Wanderer because she has taken on his beloved sister's body. He has to be brave with himself first to be strong with W I suppose.

Next assignment:
Read Chpts. 22-25, pages 212-254.
Discuss sometime early next week. Monday or Tuesday at the latest. Have a lot of reading to do, but would still like to finish this book ASAP.

I'm really trying to catch up! I'm somewhere in chapter 4, I know, not far at all. I think I'm going to skip the prolouge-chapter 9 questions because some of them I would probably spoil.

It's okay! You don't have to do the first set of Qs. But I would like you to do 10-18. I made the segments a lot shorter because we're all trying to catch up w other stuff as well. :)

That's good. It works better for me if we only read a few chapters at at time. That way I can keep up with everything. Still reading so I'll try to do the questions for tomorrw.

It's fine. And you don't really have to do Qs you know... But I mean, if your heart's set on it, shoot for the stars I suppose. LOL

Trust me my hearts set on it. I feel terrible if your the only one answering questions as it is. But I'm working on it.

It's okay, Kate. I'm trying to do so much lately I can barely even notice really. I enjoy the Qs though. Whenever you answer them, just remember that your BFF doesn't hate you for being behind. It happens to the best of us. (Trust me).

Questions for chpts. 19-21:

1. Wanderer is being given the cold shoulder by everyone except Jeb. Why do you think Jeb is being so mannerable to Wanderer?

2. Wanderer is given a new room by Jeb. IT's only temporary, though, as it belongs to someone out on the raid. W tell Melanie that they woun't be touching anything, even if it means sleeping on the floor. Your thoughts on this situation? What would you do in their Wanderer's place?

3. Ian and the doctor decide to include themselves in the tour with Jeb, Wanderer / Melanie, and Jamie. Why do you think they did this? To just take a walk and show the others that they were fine with W being there, or to interrogate W, like this suspiciously did when they got near the infirmary-place?

Chapter19-21

1. I'm not sure why. I think he can feel that this one is different. Or at least he hopes so. I also think that my e it is because it found it's way by following the map.

2. (this is one of my q's). Well, I think it is Jared's room. I think that it is meant to make Melaine emotional. Maybe it will help show the human side.

3. I think they are curious. The doc to medical reasons. I think Ian is interested because of the previous conversation w the host. I don't think for any of those reasons. They want to learn more about it for different reasons.

Chapter 10-18

1. It was def because she wanted to seem them. I also think because she didn't want to break her promise to Jamie. Plus, she didn't care for te host yet. She didn't want to die because the host gave up.

2. If I was in that situation I think I would wait for death. Because it did seem hopeless at that point.

3. I think... That Ian has a point. How do they not know if it has feelings?

4. I think Jamie is curious. He is taking this oppertunity to learn about the host.

You mean the soul? He already knew about the host.... You keep saying host, when it should be soul. :)

Answers to 19-21:

1. Jeb might be treating Wanderer politely because a) he notices that there is something different about her that the others refuse to see. Elyssa's reason about the map is also a very good prediction. :)

2. It could very well be Jared's room like Elyssa said, or it could be someone else's entirely. Either way, this is a weird and somewhat humorous situation for me. You'd think that she would want to sleep on the bed as much as she's been crammed in her tiny cave. But maybe she doesn't want anyone plotting her deatha nymore than they already her. In that case, I would not blame her choice. But I think I would still take the bed. . . .

3. (They were just reasons off the top of my head, Elyssa!) They seemed to be only curious. They were def mannerable and the doc seems like an easy-going guy who just doesn't want to get caught. Ian, I think he has changed since Jared's interrogation of Wanderer. He seems to be truly trusting W in what she said. That's a very good thing for our protagonists.

Qs for chpts. 22-25:

1. Jeb knew all along, apparently, about W's love for Jared and Jamie. Smart man he is. But how do you think figured it out?

2. Jeb wants Wanderer to teach history to everyone like she did at the college in San Diego. She refuses; now it seems that everyone is questioning her in public---and loudly---to try to get her to change her mind. Do you think she should take the job?

3. Elyssa's guess was right on the bull's-eye!! Jeb put Wanderer in Jared's room; of course, Jamie was the on to OK it because he shares the room with Jared. How do you think Jared would react to learning that she stayed in his room?

4. Everyone has finally "calmed down." W feels better now that there's noise and less gawking, except for Maggie and Sharon. What happened to sticking together through the tough times?

Answers to 22-25:

1. Jeb is smart. That's all I have to say. He's very smart and he notices things. :)

2. I think that Wanderer should take the job. In the end, I think she will. It suits her, and it's not like she isn't good at what she used to do in SD. It could also be really good for her. The others might learn to respect her a little more.

3. Elyssa: You are great at guessing!! I don't know what prediction-superpower you have, but can you pass it on? Lol. Back to the question: I think Jared will flip out, but at the same time he might have thought about everything and changed on the raid. Maybe he won't flip out and go insane. I'll give him the BOTD (benefit of the doubt) for now.

4. I guess they hate Wanderer that much to be seriously p.o.-ed at their own husband/father. They will just have to live with it though. He's doing what he thinks is best, and . . . well it is his place.

1. Yes, Jeb is smart and he watches and listens before he jumps to conclusions that are wrong. Go Jeb!

2. I figured as she figured that Jeb put them up to asking her questions. She is going to roll over and answer their questions because she doesn't want to upsetting anyone that is kind of being nice to her. :) She is taking the job, unofficially!.

3. I thought Jared would be extremely upset about this once he came home. (But surprisingly they never breeched the subject after Jared came home. She just started staying back in the hole again.)

4. Jeb is the man and well, it is his home and his rules. LOL! But yes, I'm surprised that his thoughts have not rubbed off on Maggie and Sharon. After all Mel went to go and search of them and that is why she got caught. Blah, time for them to grow up! *and Kyle too!*
