Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Do you have a preference or anyone that can shift into any“thing” is good?

I am loving "Psy-Changelings" which has wolves and different cats. I also love Curran (were-lion). I haven’t read any of the dragon-shifter series out, but have some to try (eventually) and think they’d be very cool. Keri Arthur’s “Riley Jenson, Guardian” series had Riley, a half-vamp, half-were(wolf), gain the ability to shift into a seagull which was a fun twist. I’d love to be able to fly!

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm game for any type of shifter, I don't prefer one over the other. After reading so many werewolf books, I think it's cool when I find a were-other/shifter book that I enjoy. Nice to change it up a bit. I like a little variety in my life. :) How 'bout you?

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments I like big cats, wolves and dragons the most. I get creeped out by the snakes and rats but I kind of feel sorry for the non-predatory weres. It would suck to be a deer (like in the Psy/Changeling series) during hunting season!

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments LMAO, Ames! Hunting season! Least they have the weres and cats to watch out for them. LOL! You got me crackin' up!

Yeah, the rats are kinda ewwwww, but seriously could you find any better spies? love it!

Gotta read about some dragon shifters soon. That seems cool. Got a suggestion? I was thinking Aisling Gray, but open to others if you like one in particular.

Sandra | 25908 comments Steph, have a look at my dragon shelf for some ideas.

I absolutely recommend G.A. Aiken (aka Shelly Laurenston) for her dragon series, 1st one Dragon Actually (Dragon Kin, #1) by G.A. Aiken , 4th one is out in September; also enjoyed Marie Harte's The Dragon's Demon (Ethereal Foes, #1) by Marie Harte , the second in the series is more about angels/demons rather than dragons.

Aisling Gray is good too, I'm up to the third one in that series.

message 5: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Thanks for the shelf link, Sandra. Dragon shifters (by someone) are definitely on my TBR list.

message 6: by Laura Lulu (last edited Jun 16, 2010 08:48AM) (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Steph, you should try Shana Abe's Drakon series. It's dragon shifters and I recommend it more than Aisling Gray--I read the first 3 Aisling's and won't read the fourth, she lost me. But I'm not a huge chick lit fan, so maybe that was why it annoyed me so much. :)

I've read the 1st two Drakon's and they are good historical PNR.

The Smoke Thief (Drakon, #1) by Shana Abé The Dream Thief (Drakon, #2) by Shana Abé Queen of Dragons (Drakon, #3) by Shana Abé The Treasure Keeper (Drakon, #4) by Shana Abé The Time Weaver (Drakon, #5) by Shana Abé

message 7: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments I should be able to find those at the library, Laura LuLu. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll add them to my list. :)

message 8: by Sandra J (new)

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 145 comments My favorites are the big cat shifters (lions and tigers and leopards). I like Shelly Laurenston's Pack and Pride series, but my favorites are the books in the Pride series. I love Mitch (a lion shifter) and absolutely adore Lock (a grizzly shifter). The female shifters are just as tough as the males. Sissy Mae Smith (Mitch's mate) definitely puts the A in alpha wolf shifters.

message 9: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Grizzly shifter? Cool!

message 10: by Amber (new)

Amber (crazyaboutbooks) | 499 comments I wouldn't mind being a T-Rex shifter J/K LOL. Just started getting into reading books with shifters in them and liking them so for. I've been hung-up on vampires for so long it's nice to open my eye's to some daylight(hehe)!!!!!

message 11: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments LOL Amber! It's always nice when you find something new in the PNR world. Enjoy!

message 12: by new_user (new)

new_user I read these books in part because there are no bounds for the imagination, and I just love when authors get creative! I actually read a book with a T-Rex shifter from Nina Bang's Gods of Night. I've read books with seal shifters (selkies) too! That's Virginia Kantra's Children of the Sea series. I love it, it's romantic and wistful and hot at the same time. I've even read a few eagle or hawk shifters. Love them all! I really like that there's a whole world of them in Nalini Singh's books.

I tend not to like shifters who can take many forms. That way one beast doesn't have influence over the character and the power doesn't lend itself to development, I feel.

message 13: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments So true, NU. I think it's interesting how authors will have their shifters relate differently to their "counterparts". Some have a kind of symbiotic relationship with their "other" 1/2, while some seem to keep the two more separated. The whole "my wolf wants her/him" is hot, I think. That "other" attraction that you have to deal with that's another part of you.

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Steph wrote: "The whole "my wolf wants her/him" is hot, I think."

Ooh, I think so too. I'm partial to shifters--don't get me wrong, I like the vamps too, I'm not picky, but there's just something about a shifter and that baser animal nature. ;)

I'm reading Bonds of Justice right now and not liking it so much. I much preferred her books when they had a shifter as a main character, rather than these boring psy/psy or human/psy relationships. I'm not a huge fan of PNR anyway, I always have a hard time suspending my disbelief when these people fall in love so quickly, and Max & Sophia have basically decided each other is THE ONE in less than 24 hours. I need a bit of buildup. I remember Singh's earlier books being much better in the sexual tension aspect.

And yes, you read that right, the girl who pretty much only reads fantasy & paranormal said she had a hard time suspending her disbelief. I guess my cynical beotch is open to believing anything except love at first sight. Lol.

message 15: by new_user (new)

new_user LOL, Laura! I haven't read BoJ yet, but I loved Blaze of Memory. Shifters usually take first place with me, but I'm partial to the controlled, slowly-melting Psy. ;)

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 468 comments I have been digging shifters in general lately. I love wolves especially but I don't feel I have explored the genre enough yet to judge. I have read some cat shifter ones that were interesting (domesticated cat not big cat) I think having the ability to shift into anything or a common animal would be more practical to blending into the real world. I mean... could you imagine a tiger walking down the street?

message 17: by new_user (new)

new_user LOL! Yeah, I usually see the big shifters where the shifters fight big battles, etc. It would be cool to see a few domestic shifters, but not too many, LOL. As I can't see that being too hot too often. "Oh, look at that hot beagle shifter. Rawr."

HAHAHA A beagle shifter. I think the ability to shift into a dog or cat or some other small animal could have some survival benefits in an urban environment. For example, a cat or dog shifter could get taken in by a nice family and get food if times got tough... or you could have a villain shifter that played the "sweet stray animal" card and then robs peoples homes or something for money.

LMAO!! I really liked BOJ, I thought Max had a lot of "changeling" qualities. I thought I miss out on that with that book, but didn't. I didn't care as much for the psy/psy pairing, and LOVED the changeling/changeling pairing in Branded by Fire.

I sometimes have a problem with how quickly some characters (in any book) fall in love. And I definitely like the sexual tension involved when they don't. But, I have to say, IMO, sometimes it nice to read about two people who know it, show it and *cough* do it without all the "I love him, he loves her, I can't tell them b/c they couldn't possibly love me too, while they both suffer, lie/hide their feelings, etc". Other times, all that is a hoot. I guess it depends on how well the author writes it. Dunno.

But, I'm glad you said it <the girl who pretty much only reads fantasy & paranormal said she had a hard time suspending her disbelief> because I was thinking the same thing and was about to call ya on that one. You are so funny.

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments <you could have a villain shifter that played the "sweet stray animal" card and then robs peoples homes or something for money.> Very creative thought, AV. LOL! That would be a good book, you should write it!

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 468 comments HAHA Thanks. I never thought about getting into writing seriously. I have written things before but never tried to get anything published.

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 468 comments LOL I just sat on my laptop and wrote a "preview" of that book Steph. Might as well post it here!

Dominic Sariento sauntered into the pawn shop. He had a small bag full of treasures to sell to the owner. He had to go to different ones throughtout the city so no one would become suspicious.

"Hello, sir!" The friendly shop keeper greeted.

"Hi." Dominic muttered

"So what can I do for you today?"

"I have some things I thought you might be interested in"

"Well, let me take a look." the shop keeper replied with interest.

Dominic emptied the contents of the bag onto the counter. There were several rings, a few bracelets and a gold chain with a pendant.

"You have some interesting things here. I will give you $1200 for the lot."

"Sounds good" Dominic had learned over time that he would never get what the items were worth and didn't bother to argue. It was a waste of valuable time.

The shopkeeper handed Dominic the money and took the jewelry and placed it in a box marked "New Inventory"

"Thank you, sir. Please come again" he smiled.

"Thank you too. Have a nice day" Dominic replied. This was getting far too easy. Dominic walked to his red sportscar and hopped in. He sped off towards home feeling pleased with last night's work.

He drove quietly listening to the wind as he passed businesses, cars and shabby houses. The further he got from the pawn shop the larger and fancier the houses became. He drove up to his large stone estate and down the long winding driveway.

Dominic parked his car in his large garage, unlocked the door leading into his even larger house and stepped inside. Locking the door behind him he let out a sigh.

He looked around his great room and smiled. He was glad for all the nice things he had aquired over the last 10 years. Quite and accomplishment for a 25 year old man. Then he shed his clothes and slid into his second skin which felt more natural than his human skin. Shifting was painful but pleasurable all at once. When he went too long without shifting his skin itched from the inside out with the urge to change. He could take many forms but this one was the closest to his heart. Where the dark haired Italian once stood was a common, harmless looking, black and white shorthaired tuxedo cat.

Dominic leapt up onto his expensive couch and groomed himself. He thought of the night's mission: a large home the next neighborhood over. It was just too easy. The woman who lived there took in stray cats. She would never suspect to wake the next morning with her prized jewels gone. He fell asleep in the comfort of his truest form.

Would anyone actually read that if it was a book?

message 23: by new_user (new)

new_user LOL! I have a tuxedo cat! I would so read that book! LMAO.

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Great Job, AV! I would definitely read your book and would love being able to say "HEY, I know her!" :D

You should play around with that and keep writing. Fantastic so far. When can we see more? Oh and something to think about ... How's he get his stolen goods outta the houses? :)

If it's alright with you, would you mind creating a thread in the "member's lists" folder with your book pieces parts? I'd love to have a spot where I can pop back in and read your latest entry(ies). :D

Ladies & Gentlemen, I introduce to you ... Awesomevegan, author!

Thank you everyone! I would gladly make this a free book for all of you to read. I think it will be fun. I don't plan to make money writing but it will be a fun thing to do. I will make a post in the members thread for it. :)
