Philip Santoyo Maybe because I'm a guy that likes paranormal romance and urban fantasy my favorite author in the genere is by far Jim Butcher. Don't get me wrong Karen Chance, Kat Richardson, Rob Thurman, Vikki Patterson, Majorie Liu, all good authors but every time I find myself comparing them to the dresden files. so whats the vote

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments My hubby loves Jim Butcher and is currently listening to book 12 (I believe), Changes. I listen while I'm in the car w/him and like it. But, I've only seen the show "The Dresden Files", not read the books, so he had to fill me in on a lot to quickly catch me up. Definitely seems like a series I'd love. It's on my never-ending, always-growing stack of to-be-tried series. :)

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 82 comments I'm working my way through the audiobooks (I'm currently on #8), and I love the series. It was a slow starter for me, but by the third book it had really picked up and I was hooked. James Marsters' narration is a real treat as well, which really enhances my enjoyment of the series.

Philip Santoyo i got changes the day it came out in hard cover and i reread through the whole series as soon as i could i loved the ending powerful and meaningful. darkheart i had the same trouble with the first books as well and then again with #6 or 7 death masks

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments I'm also working my way through the audiobooks, DarkHeart. I'm almost finished with #7 Dead Beat. And I agree, Marsters narration is awesome. I am very picky with my audiobook readers and he takes the cake. :)

Katyana | 23 comments Ooooh, I love the Dresden series. Changes was... jaw-dropping to me. I love that, after 12 books, the series is still riveting. But I am dyyyyyyyying, waiting for the next book.

But I like his fantasy series too - Jim Butcher is just damn talented.

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Katyana, I just bought Butcher's 1st Codex Alera book, Furies of Calderon. Glad to hear it's also a good series.

I keep seeing everyone post about the crazy Changes cliffhanger. I'm dying to get there--I finished the 7th today and I have the 8th on audio, but then I will be reading the rest, so I'll fly through them must faster. I only listen to audiobooks on my way & from work, and I only work 2-3 days a week, so it takes me weeks to finish one. :)

message 8: by Katyana (new)

Katyana | 23 comments Yeah, the cliffhanger is brutal. Thankfully, Butcher says that the short story coming out this summer in ... I am pretty sure it is the one in the Dark and Stormy Night anthology... picks up about 20 minutes after CHANGES ends. So we don't have to wait a whole year.

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments I'll have to dig through my hubby's shelves to find book 1 and start this series soon.

Katyana, don't you love it when authors do that for us and don't make us suffer too badly between releases? But, on the flip side ... anthologies, ugh! LOL! What a double edge sword they are.

See our anthology banter here.

message 10: by Katyana (new)

Katyana | 23 comments Yeah, anthologies are definitely a double-edged sword. On the one hand, with my favorite series, I am eager to gobble up every bit I can get my hands on. On the other hand, it has really become a big thing lately - it seems like everyone is doing these short stories that directly feed into the core storyline as part of a big, expensive anthology. And if I like half the authors in the anthology, it is practically a miracle.

At the same time, I have tripped over a couple new authors to follow from anthologies. So that's nice.

the furies series was great because all the little things that seem finished in the first tie back in throughout the rest of the books.

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments I was talking to my husband about this series last night and mentioned the story in the anthology, Katyana. He was like "Huh? Anthola-what? What do you mean, why not just add that story to the next book?" Hmmm, good idea, hunny! Answer: Extra $ for a shorter story! LOL!

Anyway, got me checking the series on GR to see what other SS he might been missing and boy, there are a bunch! But, good news! I saw Side Jobs: Stories From the Dresden Files which (according to the GR summary) is: "a project fans have long been clamoring for: "Side Jobs," a compilation of Dresden Files short stories. Slated for November 11th, this anthology brings together the following stories:

+ "Restoration of Faith"
+ "Vignette"
+ "Something Borrowed" -- from My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding
+ "It's My Birthday Too" -- from Many Bloody Returns
+ "Heorot" -- from My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon
+ "Day Off" -- from Blood Lite
+ "Backup" -- novelette from Thomas' POV, originally published by Subterranean Press
+ "The Warrior" -- novelette from Mean Streets
+ "Last Call" -- from Strange Brew
+ "Love Hurts" -- from Songs of Love and Death
And exclusive, all-new material!"
It's due out Oct 26th and is 400 pages! :)

Hopefully he'll forget all about our conversation and I can get him that for Christmas! hehe

Katyana | 23 comments Oooooh. That goes on my must-have list.

I wonder if it will contain this story that picks up after Changes. And if it does, I wonder if I can stand to wait that couple extra months for it.

message 14: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments That I don't know. Maybe there'd be something on his website? I haven't been over there to see. Let us know if you find out either way. I'm sure others would like to be able to pass on the misc anthology and wait for his alone, if it is included in there.

message 15: by Katyana (new)

Katyana | 23 comments Ahhhh... well, I was apparently misinformed. Dark and Stormy Knights will contain the Dresden short "Even Hand"... which is from Marcone's POV (which, btw, sounds damn awesome to me) and takes place between Turn Coat and Changes.

Side Jobs: Stories From the Dresden Files will contain a new novella that takes place in the immediate aftermath of Changes, according to his website.

So it looks like I shall have to suck it up and wait, in any case. Alas. *cry*

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments OIC. I'll have to let my hubby know. Doubt he'll buy the anthology though. Let me know when you read it if it's too good for him to pass on. :)

Hang in there, July 20th is just around the corner. :)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Tor.com article: Jim Butcher’s New Novel Peace Talks Will Publish in 2020 for the 20th Anniversary of The Dresden Files
"Ace Books has announced that the next installment in Jim Butcher’s #1 New York Times bestselling Dresden Files series, Peace Talks, will publish on July 14, 2020 from Ace Books in the US and Orbit in the UK. The book will be the first new Dresden Files novel since 2014’s Skin Game."

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude | 376 comments This is one reason that I rarely read an incomplete series - especially fantasy types... I just don't want to wait years for the next instalment. I got burnt by a few too many. It's like waiting 5 or 6 years for the next season of a TV show!

I mean... 20 years since the series started and it's been 6 years since the last full-length book??? Shades of George RR Martin and Patrick Rothfuss (and a couple of others I can't remember right now) methinks...

message 19: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Yeah, my hubby rants every time Butcher's name is mentioned. LOL! It's just crazy how some get delayed for so long.

Michelle (michker) | 43 comments right steph and some of the others that should not have another book keeps dropping them every year

message 21: by Netanella (last edited Dec 20, 2019 02:45PM) (new)

Netanella | 152 comments I suppose I got lucky with my timing. I didn't start reading Dresden Files until after 2014, when Skin Game was just released. After I spent a year and read everything Dresden I could find, it's been dry as the Sahara. I can't wait for the new book to come out!

message 22: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Finally! I might have to plan a reread of the series.

message 23: by Sam (new)

Sam | 1052 comments In his defense, he had a lot of life changing things happen during that time. Divorce from wife, death of beloved dog, new girlfriend/fiancée/wife, relocating to west coast, building of house that took forever. He found it hard to get back into his routine but he has been working hard the past year.

Nice you haven't had to wait as long, Netanella.

:( Aw, that's a lot! Yeah, many of the delays are for life changes, which is entirely understanding, of course. Sometimes we just have to check the author's blog and see if they chat about delay. Some do and some don't. There are many (different authors) I'm still waiting for years later.
