Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments A recent challenge has got me thinking ... Is there a subject matter you won’t read about?

Sex/Orientation ....
Erotica = explicit sex scenes (could be M/F, M/M, F/F or Menage)
GLBT = gay, lesbian, bi, transsexual
BDSM = bondage/discipline; dominance/submission; sadism/masochism

Too "real-life" to want to read about ....
Rape, abduction, incest, abuse (child, spouse, drugs, etc)

Other ....?

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments I'm open minded and don't have any problems reading about the sex/orientation subject matters, as long as they fit in the story and aren't just thrown in there for the sake of it. That'd just make it porn and they got movies for that. LOL!

I have also read books that contain some of the "real-life" subject matters, like Shiloh Walker's Fragile. Again, if it fits within the story, applies to the attitude and history of the character(s), I'm ok with them as well.

I don't seek out books with any of the above though, unless it's for a challenge, like the one I mentioned causing me to start this thread.

Sandra | 25908 comments Go on just blame Rossy, shes not looking!

message 4: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments LMAO!! No blame, just got me thinkin' if anyone would pass on that challenge b/c they couldn't (for whatever reason) accept her dare. :)

Are you in on that one too?

message 5: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments I'm still deciding - it's the religious one and maybe the n/f one I'd have trouble finding a book for. I've still got 13 days to decide.

message 6: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Yeah, I am not religious, so I wasn't sure about that one at all. But, I found Sushi for One? at my library and figured, why not?

I don't typically read NF (expand my brain? why? LOL!), but I did find a couple that sound funny by Mary Roach. Right now, I have Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex picked, but may change to another one of hers, Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers.

I decided to give the challenge a go since those two + GLBT aren't really ones I usually read and I was able to find something at the library that fits. :)

Sandra | 25908 comments Yeah, I saw your picks and they looked interesting; just have to see what I can find at the library, which isn't always easy.

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments I don't mind most things but I have trouble reading non-fiction abuse. I once tried to read A Child Called "It", I didn't get very far before I gave up. Reading it in fiction though doesn't bother me as much perhaps because the authors I read don't tend to go into as much detail. Ditto, war stories.

I can't take the humiliation/extreme submissive aspects of BDSM plus rape (in erotica), that's what I really disliked about The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty. Although due to the repetitiveness of these things, it did get boring after a while, which kind of shocked me - that I could be desensitised so quickly and easily.

Ah, religious fiction. If it's Christian, I can't touch it. My godmother has for years tried to push Christian fiction on me (apparently I'm not religious enough for her), and I've rejected it at every turn. I won't give in now ;-)

I just had to vote for the top-rated review of Bonk -it was hilarious! I've added it and Stiff to my wish-list.

message 9: by Jackie M (new)

Jackie M | 695 comments I really don't care to read M/M ,F/F, or menage it's just not my thing. I also won't touch books about real life possessions like The Amityville Horror that stuff really freaks me out!

message 10: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments @Ames, I had to drop the religious romance off my "Dare Challenge" list b/c I just couldn't do it. I kept looking (and spent WAY too much time doing so) for something I might like. But, in the end, it's just not me and I don't want to force-read a book just to fit into a challenge. ***deleted a lot of rambling to save you from having to read -or skip over- my "why I'm not into organized religion" speech LOL**

I don't read a lot of NF, so many glorious fiction sittin' here TBR that I don't make the time of NF. I should though, at least a few here and there to try to expand my brain a bit. I am kinda looking forward to STIFF, sounds good.

Yeah, I can read, but don't go looking for anything with humiliation/slaveish type erotica either.

@Jackie, LOL! Those are AWESOME to me! >:) Although usually a good horror movie hits the spot for me better than the book it's based on.

message 11: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Steph, I'm not into organised religion either. And I'm not saying another word on that or I'll start rambling too.

I have NF on my shelves. I usually start reading one then get distracted by a fiction book and I forget about the NF book after that so I have plenty of unread and half read ones on my shelves.

message 12: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments LOL, Ames! Glad to find a fellow "Don't get me started!" girl. hehe

Lemme know if you read a NF book you really like and I'll try to find it. I really should try to read more NF, just can't seem to make myself do it. Maybe after reading STIFF I'll get into more of them. We shall see.

message 13: by Gus (new)

Gus | 2 comments I'm not into religious fiction at all. I just can't do it! I feel better that a lot of you agree with me!

I actually like some NF though. I love Jen Lancaster and Laurie Notaro. Sometimes I get in moods where I read a lot of memoirs. For darker NF, I like Susanna Kaysen or Marya Hornbacher.

As for erotica, I don't mind any orientation, as long as its a good story!

message 14: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Nope, you're not alone, Gus. :) And ... Welcome!

I'll have to check some of those out when(ever) I get into a NF-kinda mood.

Ah, hell, who am I kidding? I have so many others to read that it takes a challenge like Rossy's to get me to read just one. LOL!

message 15: by GinBee (last edited Jun 24, 2010 04:29AM) (new)

GinBee (jennymbee) | 34 comments I'm generally open minded when it comes to my reading. The only thing I can not read about is child abuse of any sort (unless there are not any real details and it is necessary to see how a character gets to a certain point in their lives). I don't have so much of a problem if it's adults though - but I might just skim some parts.

Erotica wise, I'm with Gus and Steph, pretty much anything goes (as long as they are consenting adults!)

Best not get me started on organised religion either.............

message 16: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Yeah, abuse, in all forms is disgusting, but I agree with you. If the character's experienced abuse (child or otherwise) in their past and it's relevant to their story now, I'm ok with it. Just wouldn't care for all the dirty details.

I hear ya, girl (re: both the sex & religion comments)! :)
