I know that creating characters can be kind of tricky, so if you need help with anything - from a personality to a name to an appearance - don't hesitate to ask!

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Also, Writers Against Cardboard Characters is a great place to go for charcter development!

Here's a link to the above comment.

Amy (runawaymarbles) | 75 comments : ) I need to be more active. My alerts died and I stopped going on a lot of GR groups.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, you do. :P I did that for about a month or two because of school and deleated myself from alot of the groups I wasn't very active in.

message 6: by Amy (new)

Amy (runawaymarbles) | 75 comments You left WWAC?!

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

No! Not that group! Just a bunch of others that were really random and I didn't participate much in.

message 8: by Amy (new)

Amy (runawaymarbles) | 75 comments oh ok. I need to go participate more in WWAC... I'll do that. *wanders off*

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

message 17: by ☺♡M♡☺ (new)

☺♡M♡☺ (moonlanpersonyahoocom) | 37 comments Character help. What do we do here? Most of our stories (not including "the Ninjas") have not been read a lot.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay, I need a little help deciding something. The main character in a new story of mine has a little sister, Kassandra, with Asperger's Syndrome. Usually, people with Asperger's have something they obsess over, like constellations or flowers or things like that. What I need help with is figuring out what Kassandra's little obsession is. Any ideas? =]

Like the origins and the meanings and stuff. Really weird ones.

message 21: by Ilana (new)

Ilana (ilanashayn) Yes, obscure words!

message 22: by Ilana (new)

Ilana (ilanashayn) We are so writers...

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

That sounds like her. Thanks!

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey, tell me if this name sounds familiar:

Rhyll.

I can never tell if I'm being original when I make up a name, or if I'm just repeating one that's in my subconscious...

message 25: by ♥ Regan ♥ (new)

♥ Regan ♥ (rubber_duck) | 62 comments Oh!
And this name too...
Vaena

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

Sounds cool to me. XD

♥ Regan ♥ (rubber_duck) | 62 comments Haha, thanks.
Rhyll is original.
I've never heard it.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

YES! I'M ORIGINAL! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! *runs off cackling into the night*

Sorry 'bout that. Dusk brings out the hyper side of Maxy.

One of my teachers had a dog named Phydeaux. It sounds like Fido, but... yeah. I love cool dog names. Our last dog was JamesSirBensonMum. It makes no sense unless you've seen the movie "Murder by Death".

Anyway. Thanks! I hope it will stay original for a while. Ehehe.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

This group is dying. =[

Uh, character help...

Agh. I'm just worried about my new main character becoming a Mary Sue. A lot of her personality is ending up like mine, and I don't have much of a personality at this point... Gack.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Out of curiosity, What's a Mary Sue? I never really got the idea of that.

And I agree, the group is practically already dead.

message 34: by Karishma (new)

Karishma It's pretty much a cardboard character. like, nothing bad happens to her or she has no flaws.

message 35: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 18, 2011 12:35PM) (new)

A Mary Sue (or Gary Stu, for males) is one of those characters that just isn't well-rounded. She is gorgeous, adorable, little-miss-perfect, loved by everyone, distressed by all the people that are in love with her, either messes everything up and is immediately forgiven or does everything right on the first try, etc. The polar opposite of these things can make a character Mary-Sue ish as well.

message 36: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 8 comments Fear the dreaded anti-Sue, for she does nothing right and no one likes her, but she still gets to be whatever the author wants her to be. *shivers*

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Indeed. There's definitely such a thing as being too Anti-Sue.

message 38: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 8 comments It gets kind of annoying sometimes, wondering if my character is one or not. But then I look at some of the stuff that published authors get away with and stop worrying about it.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm starting a new idea and I really need an amazing name for one of my main characters. I need a name for an angel. I tried looking through actual angel names and even through some saint's names, but nothing pops out. I would really appreciate some ideas.

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

An angel? http://www.angelsghosts.com/angel_names Here's a link for angel names- male and female. :) Good luck!

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks:)

message 42: by S.R.R. (new)

S.R.R. Colvin (srrcolvin) | 2 comments I like the angel names link. If I was young enough to have kids, they might end up with something from that list! :)

message 43: by ♥Allison (new)

♥Allison (zombialli) | 7 comments Okay, I'm in the progress of writing a story called Hiding Beyond Deception. The main character boy, Will, is just so boring. I have it where i switch perspectives and his is the first and it's sooooooooo short. The other characters perspective is so interesting that I had to leave a part of it out because it's so long! I need some help to liven Will up... Any suggestions???? Oh, yeah and he's a werewolf.... i fizgot to mention that one....

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

Give Will an outrageous quirk or obsessive-compulsive tendency that interferes with the narrative sometimes? Enough to add some humor? And/or try to make sure he's different enough from the other character--maybe take a trait the second character has and give the polar opposite of it to Will.

Speaking of which, Kae is too much like me. It happened unintentionally. Is there some distinctive trait you guys have noticed about me that I could use by giving the opposite of it to Kae?

I don't think it's bad to have a character similar to you, as long as she doesn't become Sue-ish. One of my strongest, most complex characters is really just me with a different name. I didn't realize as I was writing her, but when I was done, it was really clear.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm going to take your word because I love your writing. I just got paranoid about it because a teacher read some of my notebook and said "Is this an autobiography?". (Yes, of course. This is about the time in my life when I was locked in a room as a science experiment.)

Which character is it, out of curiosity?

message 47: by Niki, the Great and Powerful Empress of Sarcasm! (new)

Niki | 91 comments Mod
Amelia, from my play Lockdown. I haven't posted it, but I can send it to you if you want to read it.

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

I would love to read it. :)

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm posting here a lot. Ehe.

So, I have this character named Ika, the narrator in a new story idea of mine. These two islands are in the middle of a war, and her side sends her as a sacrifice to the other island with this illness that's meant to weaken or kill off the opposing forces. She has dirty-blonde hair to the middle of her back, green/brown eyes, and she's about 5'5". Her main skills are dodging and counter-attacking because of her small stature. She's rather skeptical and hesitant to trust when it comes to human beings.

Why do I tell you all this? Well, for the life of me, I can't figure out how old she is, and I thought this info would help. I could see her anywhere from 16 to 25.

message 50: by Alexa (last edited Nov 15, 2011 03:03PM) (new)

Alexa I can see her being 17 or 18 but I think that's just cuz i'm 17 and i like reading stories with character around my age. Let me know what you decide on. :)
