Gitte (gittetofte) I've only read On Chesil Beach and I really liked it. I'm looking forward to read more by him, I just don't know which one...

message 9: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments SOLAR is good as it has a lot of humour and both Jo and I are reading ENDURING LOVE so we will be able to let you know soon.....

message 10: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Hi Jo
On the whole I think ot does take at least a chapter or two to really get into his rythym with one or two exceptions....

message 11: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments I know.I'm not sure why he does his but hey ho!

message 12: by DJ (new)

message 14: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Hi **Waving** I'm here. Late to the party :)

I read Amsterdam. It was the first of his that I did read.

At home I have Black Dogs and Saturday; I wanted to get Chisel Beach when it came out, but somehow I didn't. I'm glad that Gitte enjoyed it. I will definitely add it to my TBRs.

message 15: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) I had not heard of Enduring Love.. how can that be?

message 16: by Shelli (new)

Shelli Gitte wrote: "I've only read On Chesil Beach and I really liked it. I'm looking forward to read more by him, I just don't know which one..."

I'm tempted to try this one...I've only read Atonement.

Will do!

message 20: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Shimotakahara (lshimo) Thanks for reminding me of how much I loved Amsterdam! I would say that this novel is my favourite McEwan novel; the characterization, tight structure, and sexual dynamics just a touch risque (I won't spoil it), made it an intriguing novel...... Hmm... Maybe I'll blog about it next

Jason Clay (goodreadscomwillshakespeare) | 74 comments I have the cement garden a child in time and the day dreamer and another one I can't remember what its called.
Doing science at the moment but as soon as I have read that its either the little stranger or one of the McEwan books

Hi Shell, let me know what you think when you've read it...also to let you know he is working on the screenplay for it...
I recently got BLACK DOGS and so I will let you know how it goes :-)

message 24: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) DJ - I wonder if he is involved in all of the screenplays? I know he was with Atonement too.

message 25: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments I think I heard ENDURING LOVE as well but I will need to check and get back to you as I haven't seen it....

message 26: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Have you read Solar yet?

message 27: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Hi well I would seriously recommend both ON CHESIL BEACH(I found this to be a little piece of prose that I could not put down for its simplistic beauty) and SOLAR as I was away by the contest and the fact that there was so much humor(some may regard it as Black Humor, just to give a heads up).

Regarding Ian McEwan and the screenplays of his books just to say that ATONEMENTs screenplay was actually written by Christopher Hampton ad at that time Ian McEwan felt he was best not to go down that path.
I'm afraid that I still havnt looked into ENDURING LOVE in this aspect.Sorry.

message 28: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) hi DJ-thanks for clarifying for me. I must have been confused because at the end of the DVD I saw Ian McEwan interviewed; I think he must have just ben involved (somewhat) with the making of the movie Atonement.

Your Welcome :-)
He was one of the 3 Executive Producers on ATONEMENT,he would make suggestions but wash bothered of they were used or not....
It will be intetesting to see why he decided to write the Screenplay for ON CHESIL BEACH,maybe as it will need such sensitive handling?
We will fi d out in due course,no doubt

Ah! Executive Producer, ok. I thought he was involved at some level :) DJ, I take it you did read Atonement? And saw the movie? If yes, then you know the endings were a little different, but without changing the outcome. Which did you prefer?

message 31: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Hi I started ATONEMENT and stopped bit I am hoping to read it soon so I will let you know. :-)

message 32: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) DJ, don't get put off if you find it "wordy"...it is a bit cumbersome, especially part 2. I'd recommend you see the movie after you read the book. Fabulous adaptation (IMO) and cast perfectly.

message 33: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Wordy does not put me off things...I adore the classics.I must be among the few who love the narrative by Marion in THE WOMAN ON WHITE-so you can see its not a problem for me.
And thanks about the film bit I have already seen it...twice in fact.
I will let you know what I think of the differences......

message 34: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Oh, glad you saw the film - twice :)
I also LOVED The Woman in White by the way :)
I'm signing off for now-- have a great day! Fun chat this morning, DJ!
