This would be a good book to give a teen (or even a tween IMO) who's dealing with divorce in his or her family. The main character in this book uses drawing and painting to help him deal with his mother leaving their family for another man.
Other issues that come up are alcoholism, depression, attempted suicide and anger issues (in adults). There was some cursing in the book, not a lot. There was nothing explicit in terms of sex or violence - the most violence that occurred was one of the parents having anger issues and yelling/having aggression at those times toward other adults and kids.
The main character draws and paints as a way of dealing with his parents' divorce. He's particularly interested in drawing birds, which is what drew me to the book.
The book overall was just "meh" for me. It felt like there were many storylines that didn't really go anywhere, almost like he tried to finish the book too early.
I think though that if you have a child dealing with divorce, it could be a useful book to open up discussions.
