What's in the back of the old book you are reading - game! :)

I am going to start with A Pirate's Love by Johanna Lindsey. I found a first edition with the original cover the other day at the library book sale and I just can't wait to read it!
At the back of this book Avon is pushing:
Captive Bride by Johanna Lindsey
The Flame and the Flower, The Wolf and the Dove, and Shanna by Kathleen Woodiwiss
Devil's Desire and Moonstruck Madness by Laurie McBain
Sweet Savage Love, Dark Fires, The Wildest Heart, and Wicked Loving Lies by Rosemary Rogers
Taras Song by Barbara Ferry Johnson
Now someone who has an early edition of one of the above mentioned books can list what is advertised in that book and so on... we will see where this goes :)

Moonstruck Madness and Tears of Gold by Laurie McBain
And, of course you could send away for:
The Flame and The Flower, The Wolf and the Dove and Shanna by Kathleen Woodiwiss
Devil's Desire, Moonstruck Madness and Tears of Gold by Laurie McBain
Sweet Savage Love, Dark Fires, The Wildest Heart, and Wicked Loving Lies by Rosemary Rogers
for the awesome price of $2.50 each!!
I would love to read

I have The Wolf and the Dove by Kathleen Woodiwiss and in the back are ads for:
Ashes in the Wind (Woodiwiss)
Moonstruck Madness, Chance the Winds of Fortune, and Dark Before the Rising Sun (all McBain)
Spring Moon (Bette Bao Lord)
Which one of these things is not like the other? LOL
Hmmm, I've noticed that Avon was x-advertising all their big names. How about giving a lesser known Avon author some sugar?

The Innocent
To Love Again
And a E-NewsLetter(Pillow Talk)
FYI- I am moving this thread to the "Challenges and Games" folder.... doing a bit of rearranging with our folders today :)

In the back is:
Bobbi Smith - Arizona Temptress, Rapture's Tempest, Wanton Splendor
Jo Goodman - Crystal Passion, Seaswept Abandon
Casey Stuart - Passion's Flame, Moonlight Angel, Waves of Passion
Rochelle Wayne - Surrender to Ecstasy, Reckless Passion
Phoebe Conn - Captive Heart, Love's Elusive Flame, Savage Storm, Ecstasy's Paradise
F. Rosanne Bittner - Sweet Prairie Passion, Ride the Free Wind, River of Love, Embrace the Wild Land, Climb the Highest Mountain, Lawless Love, Arizona Bride
It was such an effective marketing tool. I bought many of the books listed here, and if they weren't available, I'd find something else a profiled author wrote. In fact, I recently found one of the Penelope Neri's at the UBS and remembered it from way back. It's currently in my TBR waiting to be devoured.

Penelope Neri - Crimson Angel, Passion's Betrayal, Hearts Enchanted, Beloved Scoundrel
Constance O'Banyon - Savage Spring, Velvet Chains, Savage Winter
Sylvie F. Sommerfield - Savage Kiss, Tazia's Torment, Rebel Pride, Erin's Ecstasy
Phoebe Conn - Captive Heart, Love's Elusive Flame, Savage Fire, Ecstasy's Paradise
They were using the Avon Ribbon at least up to 1987 because I have a book from then with it.
Signet also had their "Scarlet Ribbons" covers. Follow the leader....
Shoot, I don't have any of those books, so I can't check to see what's advertised in THOSE.

Hah, I think we did!
My copy of Ashes in the Wind just has "A Woman of Substance" by Barbara Taylor Bradford. It's a book that I see a gazillion copies of at every book sale I've ever gone to :P

That works too :) We will go with that! LOL
As a matter of fact, I think I will just rename the game! It's easier and just as fun that way anyway!

I'm reading Savage Embrace by Jessica Howard and it features a ton of books in the back by people I've never heard of.
Savage in Silk by Donna Comeaux Zide
The Tuesday Blade by Bob Ottum
Daughters of The Wild Country by Aola Vandergriff
oh, and just saw Dare to Love by Jennifer Wilde... I've heard of her!
I've read one Zide book and it was excellent, until the last third where it got ridiculous. I'm hoping that it was only that one book and her others don't follow the same pattern because I have a dozen of them (including Savage in Silk). Even if they stink, she has pretty covers, thanks to Elaine Duillo. :)

On the Winds of Love by Lori Leigh
Storm of Passion by Virginia Brown (Virginia Lynn)
Fireglow by Linda Ladd
Wild Land, Wild Love by Mallory Burgess
Pride's Passion by Linda P. Sandifer
Reckless Yearning by Victoria Pade
Kathleen Woodiwiss's Come Love a Stranger, A Rose in Winter, Ashes in the Wind, Shanna, The Wolf and the Dove, The Flame and the Flower.
It was through one of these old ads that I learned of and bought 'Satan's Mistress' by Rachel Cosgrove Payes.

Avon called those books their "Ribbon Romances". I still have several of them, including the Kinsale and Fireglow. The line profiled new authors, many of whom were really good.
Aola Vandergriff wrote a series of the Daughters books, first among them Daughters of the Southwind, an excellent book that I look for every time I visit the UBS.
OK, in the back of Her Heart's Honor, there are ads for:
Bestsellers by Aola Vandergriff (as we were saying...)
Daughters of the Far Islands
Daughters of the South Wind
Daughters of the Wild Country
And
Gwendeline by Jane Ashford (a Regency)
A Splendid Passion by Marianne Evans (I've got this one! Pirates and girl in pants story)
Coral by Petra Leigh (which I've already got coming to me because it sounds good - set in the New York theater world during the American Revolution)
Casablanca Intrigue by Clarissa Ross (Morocco, 1890)
Caress and Conquer by Donna Comeaux Zide (got this one too - looks good)
Liberty Tavern by Thomas Fleming (rumbustious Revolutionary lovin' and fightin')

Norah Lofts' "Nethergate" - been reading too much romance when your mind automatically goes into the gutter, like mine just did. LOL
I have one of those old Norah Hess books (Caleb's Bride). It's buried in the TBR....somewhere....
Despite being a mile high, Tarifa only has 2 ads:
Scarlet Shadows by Emma Drummond
The Promise by Danielle Steele (which says it's an adaptation of a screenplay by a guy called Garry Michael White). Didn't know Danielle once did tie-ins.
There's also a long list of other Dell titles in the back, including
The Black Swan - Day Taylor
Roots
Beggarman, Thief - Irwin Shaw
Flames of Desire - Vanessa Royall
The Redbook Report on Female Sexuality
F.I.S.T. - Joe Eszterhas

Between you and me, we have all of of them!

Now if I can only find Wild Texas Heart.

Air Force One Is Haunted - A President in crisis faces a choice that can save a nation...
Decisions - A woman must choose between the two kinds of happiness most women only dream about.
Who's Sorry Now?She was America's rock and roll princess until the night the music stopped.
I don't think I wanna pick up any of these...still interesting tho
I have the first two, but now I must get Bonfire. It DOES sound trashy. :D
Absolutely nothing. Someone either ripped the adverts out cleanly, or the company was too cheap to add any. XD
LOL
I'd forgotten about this thread. In the back of Alice - about a gay king's straight (in this version) favorite who got murdered most brutally - there a list of whimsical fluffy Regency Coventry romances from Fawcett.
Tonal disconnect FTW.

Fortune's Flames
Sweet Savage Heart
Destiny's Temptress
Savage Conquest
Stolen Ecstasy
Arizona Temptress
Captive Bride
Desert Heart
Moonlit Magic
Elusive Swan
Catalina's Caress
And I just want to say that I often find new golden oldies and wonderful classics by scanning the back of the book adverts.

Lol, Into Passion's Dawn -- as I said, there are no adverts or anything, but they circled the last page number. I wonder if that symbolizes when everyone dies in a flaming coach off of a cliff?

So I thought it would be fun to start a game of sorts... I am going to post a book I have and what titles are mentioned at the end. Then someone who has an early edition (not a reissue) of one of those books will post what books are listed in the back of that book, and on and on until it fizzels out (not just 6 degrees, I am guessing we will come around to certain authors again and again). Then we can start again with a book from a different publisher. Clear as mud? Ok, lets try this and see where it goes :)
Rules have been amended, see message 15... its just easier and just as much fun this way! LOL
