Lindsey I love Ender's Game. Have you read any of Orson Scott Card's other works?

message 4: by Asia (new)

Asia (jo-anna) | 44 comments I haven't yet read any of his other books. But I plan to do so. I've already started Speaker for the dead. I very much enjoyed Ender's Game (apart from the part about Peter and the squirrels - I love animals). And a quote about the enemy by Mazer Rackham is just awesome!:)

message 5: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey A friend of mine once told me that there are two types of Ender's Game fans... the ones who love Speaker for the Dead and the ones who hate it. I'm in the love it camp myself, but I can assure you that all of Card's works have their own unique flavor, so even if you don't like one, I would encourage you to try something else of his. :-)

message 6: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 141 comments I am in the Love camp on that one too

message 7: by Asia (new)

Asia (jo-anna) | 44 comments I’ve finished the Speaker for the Dead and decided that I belong to the group of people who love it!

It’s funny that many people adore Ender’s Game and dislike the Speaker, considering the fact that Card treated Ender’s Game as a sort of introduction to the actual book – the Speaker for the Dead.

Certainly they’re different, but for me, both are equally marvelous:)

Ooo, I love the Sherlock Holmes mysteries. The Hound of the Baskervilles is one of my favorites. :-)

So, what was your opinion on Speaker for the Dead?

message 11: by Asia (new)

Asia (jo-anna) | 44 comments I enjoyed the Speaker immensely (as I said in one of my earlier posts in this thread:)
But I may elaborate on this one a little bit more.

I must admit that I was glad there was no more Peter. (I’m not at all happy to encounter tortured animals in the books I’m reading).

I like the character of Jane (as I would most characters who are artificial intelligence beings). When she appeared at the beginning I knew that the book couldn’t be bad. I really want to find out what’s going to happen to her next.

The biological aspect of the book is also intriguing, especially the Descolada. Another thing I take pleasure in reading about – superintelligent viruses.

Asia (jo-anna) | 44 comments I said earlier that I'd set the objective in due course. Ok, now the time has come.

I've just modified the topic of my thread declaring that I'll try to read 12 000 pages in one year's time.

Wish me perseverance and luck in choosing good books :)

That trilogy by Canavan is good. I also read the stand-alone novel she did for the same universe, which was just as good. Her new trilogy is on my to-read list. Hope you enjoy the third book!

I'll add up pages to 3rd June (as initially planned) and then probably set higher aim and start all over again:)

message 23: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey Congrats! Good for you!

How did you like Hundred Thousand Kingdoms? I've read several interviews with the author that prompted me to put it on my "to read" list, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

message 24: by Asia (new)

Asia (jo-anna) | 44 comments Thanks Lindsey!:)

I liked Hundred Thousand Kingdoms very much! Which surprised me because the first several pages didn’t awe me in any way. I kept reading hoping that something will happen to make the story more interesting:) And I’m glad I did because the moment came when Yeine was told something very crucial about her past and herself. Since then it grew better with every page:) I was more and more fond of Nahadoth (he was definitely my favourite character) and his conversations with Yeine were something I was really waiting for.

Asia (jo-anna) | 44 comments Since the year has passed, and the challenge has been completed I hereby close this thread:)

The challenge was a success! I planned to read 12 000 pages and read 13 933 :D

This year I want to beat that number. I've already created a new thread. So, see you there!
