Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Since we are starting to have both Nook and Kindle owners here and possibly other e-Reader formats too, I will start a generic thread.
You may have seen the press release news that Amazon announced Kindle titles outsold hardbacks recently - this article gives some reasons why.
Makes sense to me!

Cathy | 180 comments Ann, I haven't yet taken the plunge. I am still debating Kindle vs. Nook. I was heavily leaning toward Kindle but I am seeing lately better reviews of Nook...oh, decisions, decisions.

Donnajo | 4351 comments When I do play with my nook LOL I'm enjoying it and happy with what I got. I look forward to every friday to see what my free book will be. I know they have many free books all the time but I know when friday comes the first thing I do when I get to the shore is check what the new free book will be and download it. Now I just have to read all the books I get before the nook fills up. I even have a wish list started. And I AM IN CONTROL of the one's I buy (so far that is LOL)
Also every day they have the Daily which is 3 or 4 blogs or any other things they put up about the day or something funny or whatever. In the begining I read them everyday but now it's off and on. I haven't figured our if I can go back and read missed ones. From what I think probably not.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Cathy:
Definitely a dilemma, there are definitely some advantages to the Kindle and some advantages to the Nook. A couple of points for each below. I am sure others can add to the pros and cons of each. I love my Kindle so am predisposed in that direction.

Kindle books are available on just about any device with the Kindle apps for Mac, PC, iPad, Blackberry, etc. and can sync across devices. People sharing the same Amazon account share the content.
The Nook offers the ability to borrow library books electronically and some enhanced sharing of books across devices, so adds to the list of available books.

Donnajo | 4351 comments Let's see what I can add about the Nook. two way of turning pages the arrow on the sides and when the bottom screen which is what you do everything from (where the kindle has a keyboard) when that goes dark you can turn the pages by swiping it. If you go to a B&N store you get more IN STORE stuff than you can at home. Things like if you are close to one and have the time you can read any book for 1 hour a day free. Also they usually give you discounts and free things that day. The lending thing I haven't got into yet just because I haven't read finished enough of my books to do it. Not that I need to finish any of them but I think I would want to finish a book before lending it out. You can read the book during that time but you auto get it back after so many days. And that book can't be lent out again. There are groups on the boards that you can get involved in with the lending. That is a good way to get to read more books and not have to buy or get them yourself. I saw a great new cover for the nook the last time in B&N good thing I didn't remember it before leaving because I think I would have bought a second cover. Mine was cheaper and plain just heavy leather with a elastic band to hold it close. I also have a drawstring flowerly cloth bag I put that in with my light. I was going to get a vera bradley bag at one point and my sister would have bought it for me for my birthday but I ended up saying what I had was good enough. I just wanted it for carrying. When I put it in my pocket book to bring it anyplace I don't use that cloth bag. The one thing I did change on monday I had read about heat cracking the screen which I'm sure it's the same thing with any laptop. The morning I leave from the shore I put my stuff in the truck of the car early then don't leave for a few hours later. That was one of the things they warned against the trunk of a car and not keeping it in there. So now I leave the laptop and nook out until I'm ready to leave. And then I put it in the car with me. If you have any questions about the nook I'll be happy to answer if I know the answer. I'm happy with it. I love reading the daily which I'm not sure if Kindle has anything like that. In the beginning I read it everyday it's interesting stuff. Dave Barry did a funny blog that is always on there but new the same thing about welcome to your nook or something like that. I'm also very close to finishing another book on there.

message 7: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4351 comments One other thing I started a goodreads bookshelf on my nook books but as of yet I haven't really put all the books I have up on it. Will catch up with that soon. Also there is a picture on facebook I guess that on the nook board someone took a picture of reading their nook with the ocean or water in the background. all you see is the nook with knees and water and sand in the back. I think I want a picture like that. LOL. Also there was a place with people naming their nook. I haven't figured out a name yet I know some of your are into naming their things. The nook I haven't figured out one yet. Oh, another thing do I really want to take the nook to the beach I would be very scared with sand around. Maybe if I know ahead it's not windy.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Bestselling Swedish author Steig Larsson is first to have more than one million Kindle books sold http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/t...

I saw this article today with a humorous reader comment that "Lisbeth Salander hacked into the Amazon site and faked Steig Larsson's Kindle books sold count and transferred the royalties."

Since I am one of the buyers who helped create this milestone, I don't doubt the count is true! ;)

Dawn | 1371 comments I was really tempted when I read about the pre orders for the newest Kindle...and figured I would think about it some more. However, I was very tempted because The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo was due yesterday and I've only just started it. Since there is a wait list, I can't renew :( Today an early birthday present arrived from my sister...and its a Kindle! I'm so excited! Its charging and I'm just waiting for her to email me the re-registration info since its a gift. I'm guessing its the 2nd generation, reading device but it doesn't really say on the box.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Congrats on your new Kindle Dawn! I predict you will love it!! What a great gift from your sister!!
I am reading The Girl Who Played with Fire on mine right now! I also had it out from the library and didn't want to skim it or not be able to finish and have to get it again weeks later.

Dawn | 1371 comments Ann, for some reason, I'm having a much easier time reading it on the Kindle. I do love it. I'm a little wary because I do love my library too!

message 17: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Dawn:
For various reasons I have been keeping a few less library books on my tbr pile; new hold policies, 7 day checkouts, fewer copies of books being ordered, less time to read, and of course my Kindle. That said, I too still LOVE my library and am always reading at least two library books, one audio in the car, and one "house book". We can do both!

Donnajo | 4351 comments My sister said to me yesterday on the beach that someone was reading one of those "things like you have" And it was the neighbor in the back. So today when I went with Robbie over to the neighbor's because the granddaughter asked Robbie if he wanted to go in her swimming pool and he wouldn't go by himself I had my nook in my hand because I was reading it and they (the neighbor's)were just on their way to the beach I thought she would have said something but she didn't and I felt strange saying oh I saw you reading one which one do you have. She looked like she had a glare thing in front of it or something that was hanging from it. I'll find out at some point but I'll wait to the right time to ask.

message 24: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments DJ, I bet she was thinking the same thing and feeling equally shy. She'd probably be delighted for the opportunity to talk about how much she loves her Nook/Kindle.

Donnajo | 4351 comments I have the first one (book) and the last is a part of a series. She used to be a must reader for me. But I haven't read a book of her's in awhile. Probably the last two books I need to read. The first Sullivan's I have but not this one and there might be one more not sure though.
I'm way behind on my nook books. By the way I'm trying to think of a name for my nook. Any Ideas? I know some of you love naming your things. there is someplace on the nook board that they did names some are real cute but I don't want to steal someone pick. So far all I came up was nook book. Which is on the dull side.

Mary/Quite Contrary Phillips | 459 comments Dawn...congrats on your kindle. I really love mine.

I didn't last long...I ordered a new kindle in the first hour it was announced. I just happened to be working that evening...mine should be here Friday or Monday. Can't wait!

I'm not sure what to do with my current kindle. DH does NOT want it in Afghanistan. Ideas?

you could probably sell it on ebay...lol
unless you have a friend you really really like.
i am toying with getting a new one and giving my old one to my sister but not sure yet if i really NEED one..lol

Mary/Quite Contrary Phillips | 459 comments Sherry...I very clearly do NOT need a new one, but pooh on that. Although, I could make a case for it. I was looking at a friends K2 which is much newer than mine and her screen has much, much darker ink. For that alone it's worth it to me. The people I would have given my K2 to already own one or are not interested.

Donnajo | 4351 comments I love free fridays. Another free book on nook and since I came online I found out earlier than when I get to the shore and get stuff done. It's a J. Jance book. Hour of something can't remember the exact title. I already downloaded it. For once it's a author I heard of. Not that they don't always have free books you can get but on friday they give you one special book for a limited time offer. They also have been doing free bn classics certain ones each week. Not that I'm a classic girl but for those who enjoy reading the classics it's nice to be able to get. Even though again there is also classics free all the time not the bn ones. I'm waiting for romeo and juliet I think I read that long ago but think I would read it again.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments This link is to an intriguing YouTube video with ideas for new features for eReader devices.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odQfE4...
some of them would be particularly helpful. I like the idea of a stats page that would help you estimate where you are while reading by using the "pages" per minute you have been experiencing and help you know how close to the end of a chapter break you are! That is one of my pet peeves about the Kindle.

message 46: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odQfE4...
The ideas have a lot of merit, some more than others.
I would love to be able to know how close to the end of a chapter I am while reading. ;)
*Character information links - click-able while reading
*Leave a voice "friend annotation" that a friend or you could read later
*Lend a book to a friend and see where they are reading ("page") and then able to recall the book
*Stats page that estimate pages you have read per minute and help estimate how long it will take to finish or get to the end of a chapter
*keep up with networked friends position in a book you are reading together
*links to videos about subjects in the book.

me, too, ann..
and an easy way to skim back to the beginning of the book or a chapter to check on things that i have forgotten..lol

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Sherry:
That seems like a good one to me too, though I have been intrigued at the idea of highlighting character's names or passages on a book while I am reading for later reference. I have been meaning to check out the feature of accessing your highlights from your PC too from the Amazon site rather than just on the Kindle.

Lat | 14 comments These books are probably the best I have read in a while. I am finishing up "The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest". Lisbeth is a trip and Mikael is a man ho but basically a good guy. I am heartbroken that the author passed away and that there will be no more books by him. He is a TALENTED writer.
