Julie S. I've heard of some odd things used as bookmarks, and I was wondering if anyone had some to add.

A friend of mine uses movie ticket stubs. My brother often just memorizes his page number instead of a bookmark.

One thing that I'm thinking about doing is cutting out comic strips from the paper and using those as bookmarks.

I know that none of those are super odd, but I wanted to get the conversation started.

message 2: by Angela (new)

Angela B I use random scraps of paper quite often. I think right now it's my clock in slip from work

message 3: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) I used to co mit the cardinal sin of bending the edges of the pages:p but not anymore. I used to use this feather that I had but now it just slips of paper:)

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

Sometimes I use a paper clip or a bobby pin. And I have used a piece of string/yarn before too.

message 5: by Jen (new)

Jen (In the Closet With a Bibliophile) (Jen_thebibliophile) | 300 comments I use anything I can find to mark the page. :D I've used a spoon, a knife, toilet paper, receipts, money, pictures, paperclips, gum wrappers, napkin, licorice (covered in plastic mind you), envelopes pieces of plastic, plastic bags. Sometimes I use a bookmark, but I usually lose them. Sometimes I use my cell phone. I can NEVER remember my page number and folding the pages is against the law in my world so... if it keeps my page, it definitely works for me! :D I've used some even weirder things as bookmarks, but I think they are possibly too weird to list here. I really hate trying to find my place again, i'm just too impatient.

Cathy (cgraceh) | 10 comments I love bookmarks!! And I love quotes...I recently found a website where you can print out your own bookmarks with famous quotes on them...these are the ones I chose...

You can also print them from my blog...

message 7: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Pfaff (kl_pfaff) I used to use a long piece of ribbon that stuck out at both ends. This past February I bought a kids set of Valentines that came with Harry Potter bookmarks so now I have an endless supply of little Harrys to mark my pages with!

message 8: by Elizabeth☮ (new)

Elizabeth☮ i always use bookmarkers. i NEVER dogear my pages. if i don't have a bookmarker, i use a scrap of paper or a movie stub.

i've looked into crocheting some bookmarkers, but i'm not sure i've got the skills yet. if anyone knows an easy pattern, please post it.

message 9: by Kate (last edited Jul 31, 2010 11:23AM) (new)

Kate (katemreads) | 46 comments I love this question. My form of bookmarks is weird. I'll save random stuff like my passes for classes, brand tags from clothes, some are really cool looking, magazine advertisments, only if they look cool or pretty though, stickers, and even the purple wrappers from the Hershy Bliss candy, actually I'm embarrassed to say that I also have those things that you get when you're trying perfume, you know they put them on a paper that looks pretty and is only for their prefume. I had about a million from the last time I went perfume shopping over a year ago and I still have so many of them. Anyway I kept getting so many and I couldn't find a place to put them so I just threw them in my bags from other stores. They're pretty and make your books smell good.

So after collecting then, when I find which book I'm going to read next I go through my bag of bookmarks and choose which one I think will fit the book. It's weird but some bookmarks really suit a certain book while others I really have to look. I've also knitted and crocheted some bookmarks but unfrotunatly they're all the basic pattern. Sorry I can't help Elizabeth. You might be able to find some easy patterns online.

Then there are the books that I know I'm going to love and get through really fast and those I usually just memorize the page. I also never dogear me pages. I don't know whay anyone would. Jen said it perfectly, dogearing is against the law, lol! :)

Can they do names as well? The book mark I loved the most my mother cross stitched for me. I ended up getting rid of when I got blood all over it. I usually use whatever will work. I don't like the things that clip to pages. I want to be able to pick up from where I left off.

message 11: by Allison (new)

Allison (alanacooper) | 2 comments haha i use trash like my chips bag or a gum wrapper. its a bit silly but i never remember to bring my books marks when i pack to go sum where,i just bring the book.

message 12: by Rosalie (new)

Rosalie Sambuco | 25 comments I tried to be very good and used only bookmarks I had bought or received as gifts. That became too expensive so I now use whatever is close at hand: scraps of paper, envelopes, gum wrappers, yarn or string, photos etc.

message 13: by Dara (new)

Dara | 85 comments I have used any number of things as bookmarks but my favorite bookmarks are ones you can find at CVS Pharmacy and Barnes and Noble. The ones from CVS are the best, in my opinion. They are magnets that hinge over the top of the page and you will not lose them, at least they won't ever fall out of the book. The ones from BN are typically a heavy weight paper/card stock with a picture on it and the magnets glued inside. The ones I have only found at CVS (and now I am having trouble finding them) have like a laminated picture that is part of the thin magnet.

message 14: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) i just started a collection of bookmarks.

anyway, almost everything i can get my hand to can be a bookmark. I've used rulers, stray pieces of paper, museum and movie tickets, receipts, and even other books. once or twice even my phone had that honor

Most of the time it's my phone. It's just always, always on me, so it's a convenient thing to use. Even if the book can't even remotely shut with it in the middle. HA!!

message 16: by Jessica B (new)

Jessica B | 94 comments I always use a bookmark and have tons of them. My boyfriend bought me the cutest little penguin page holders with magnets on them last year and I adore them.

I have a twilight one that I use all he time right now but it is startign to get ratty so it might be time for me to move on the my moose book mark. (it's like a little flattened stuffed animal) :)

I know right! its just there, waiting

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I also use everything and anything! Anything but dog eared pages. I've even taken a photo of the page number I was on. That way I wont loose the page and I can still use the phone.

My son likes to cut up scrap peices of paper and call it a book mark for me. I use those or photos mostly.

message 19: by Jules (new)

Jules (fiddlebug13) I normally try to remember the page...and fail...not a very good system!! I have tons of bookmarks somewhere...sometimes i just rip off a piece of paper from a notebook or something. I am a very random-bookmarking person.

message 21: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) I have a few bookmarks I use regularly now, two of them are Lord of the Rings and one is the bible verses from 1 Corinthians about love. If those aren't available, then I will use just about anything on hand. envelopes, hair ties, rubber bands, post cards, pictures, movie ticket stubs, my cell phone.

I've even stuck my cat's tail in my book a couple of times if I knew I wouldn't be gone long and she was in a deep enough sleep.

If I can't find anything or am in a hurry and I'll be gone a while, I just commit the page number to memory. If I just want to grab a snack or something, I'll stick my finger in the book where I left off and just carry the book around with me.

Your cat's tail?! LOL!! That is awesome! I have this image of trying to use my cats. I don't think she'd allow it. Even if she was sleeping. It would prolly wake her up. Still, it's funny to think about.

message 23: by Jeanette (new)

Jeanette (shychef30) | 4 comments I use my old buiness cards

message 24: by **Carla** (new)

**Carla** lol...i ahve known of anyone to just remember their page...I would probly forget the second I closed the book. recently I have been using scrap pieces of paper for book marks, whatever seems to be within reach...maybe I will buy a new book mark when I am out shopping today:P

message 25: by Heather (new)

Heather (nickyblue7) i use only about three actually bookmarks from my massive collection of all of them. one has chinese writing on it, the other has a cat on a piano, and the last one has the description of someone born in the year of the dragon (which i am not). other than that i use a piece of paper i can find. like right now im using my library receipt for the book im currently reading

message 26: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) lol why having the 3rd marker if youre not born in the year of the dragon?

message 27: by Heather (new)

Heather (nickyblue7) well i've always thought the chinese zodiacs were cool and it was the only one i could find there so i just grabbed it.

message 28: by Ji Mei (new)

Ji Mei (jimei) One time, I was watering flowers for this nice, old lady and a flower fell. I was so sad! But since it already fell, I took it, stuck it by "flower" in a dictionary and left it. Later I laminated it and had a scripture mastery with it.

message 29: by Ji Mei (new)

Ji Mei (jimei) I love Chinese stuff. (Then again, my mom is one) I learned some Chinese so I can write a few stuff. On the zodiac, I'm a dog, which is ok, but it isn't cool as a dragon or tiger.

message 30: by Heather (new)

Heather (nickyblue7) i love chinese stuff too, and im the year of the rat

message 31: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) apparently me too because we were born in the same year (just checked on your profile)

message 32: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) ooh i just noticed!you were born seven days after me!

message 33: by Heather (new)

Heather (nickyblue7) Cool! :D so u were born on the first?

message 34: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) yep, at least its a holiday C;

message 35: by Heather (new)

Heather (nickyblue7) lol. so i have just used the weirdest bookmark for the past few days. it was one of those paper perfume samples.

message 36: by Ji Mei (new)

Ji Mei (jimei) I found in my Chinese class a German/Polish bookmark with some kind of famous painting.

lol!

message 38: by FlowerFairy (new)

FlowerFairy | 1 comments If I'm outside (my favorite place to read) I'll use whatever is handy - a leaf, a blade of grass, a feather, flowers my children have picked. If I'm in the house, it's whatever I grab first - a receipt, a torn piece of paper, a ribbon, a library check out slip. I have tons and tons of beautiful bookmarks a friend has given me over the years, but I never think to get one when I start a book and when I pause, it's just easier to grab something nearby than to go get one. :)

message 39: by KSMary (new)

KSMary I also use random scraps of paper, receipts, library printout, etc. I scrapbook, so I have a few bookmarks that are handmade from the swap but I rarely use them. I even have one with magnets like what someone described that they got from a bookstore but I can't find it. LOL My DD bends the pages down which drives me CRAZY!!!! She definitely didn't get that bad habit from me!

message 40: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) lol

message 41: by Andrez (last edited Aug 29, 2010 08:01AM) (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) for a while I opened the books and left them like this http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1Tk9X8njIqI... but with the pages below

then my mom told me it ruined the books so i stopped

message 42: by Stacy (new)

Stacy | 41 comments I used to use anything and everything but now I just use a pic of my son made onto a bookmark he is always telling me I have my nose in a book so now I tell him he is there with me lol

message 43: by Emma (new)

Emma (merebuilt) I either use a bookmark or if the book has a dustjacket, then I use the flaps.

message 44: by Ziena (new)

Ziena harfoush (znzon) | 1 comments I always read with a pen in my hand so i just use my pen or if the is mine I will write something or draw a little heart heart on the page number
