Caolle plays a big part in this book. We find out his reaction to the massacre at Dier Kenton Vale, he tries to nurse Arithon out of despair, Arithon fights and wounds him under the influence of the curse, and then he plans that brilliant plot aboard ship and completely humiliates and defeats the dear Lirenda.
I just finished rereading that part and was weeping at the end. ;< So sad and powerfully written. The plan is explained with peerless skill and his last words to Arithon just wrung out my heart.
It was a very hard blow for Arithon too. He hated that he didn't have the control to stop the bloodshed of one of his friends because he was under thrall of the curse. I think that's when he realized how the strong the curse has really become.
