It's months away but a bunch of people are planning on reading Mists in January. It's a reread for me but an amazing book and I'm excited for everyone to read it. Let us know if you plan on joining in :)

message 2: by Elise (new)

Elise (elisebeth) I will be joining :)
I am away for a week in January but I will have time to read it :)

message 3: by Thalia (new)

Thalia | 64 comments I will be joining in. I shall try to read the rest of the series first though, if I can get it in. For those who dodn't know, Mists is the last book in a series started By Marion Zimmer Bradley and then in conjunction with and finally completed by Diana L. Paxson. There are 8 books (so far). In order of story (not publication) they are:
The Fall of Atlantis
Ancestors of Avalon
Sword of Avalon
Ravens of Avalon
The Forest House
Lady of Avalon
Priestess of Avalon
and finally
The Mists of Avalon

message 4: by Thalia (new)

Thalia | 64 comments I should clarify though, that reading Mists of Avalon without having read any of the others in the series is totally okay. Mists makes a great stand alone, you don't need to know anything going in to it.

I read The Forest House and Lady of Avalon but I didn't like them anywhere near as much as Mists. Have you read them all before Thalia?

ladywallingford I will join if the book is at my local library. I've been wanting to read the Mists of Avalon for years but for some reason or other it keeps getting pushed to the back burner.

LOL Maybe because it's almost 1000 pages?
I love big books but sometimes they're a little intimidating...

ladywallingford Hee! As long as it's a good read, I'm game for any page length.

Something else always ends up grabbing my attention before I think of The Mists of Avalon.

Those are the two that I have read too besides Mists and I agree, they aren't as good. It will be interesting to see what I think now as it's been many years. I have them all now nearly so I'll be all set mid november to begin (Sword of Avalon comes out in paperback early November)

Thanks for posting these here Thalia. I'm glad that Mists is a good stand alone as I may get a few of the others read by January, but not all.

message 11: by Thalia (new)

Thalia | 64 comments Sandi wrote: "Thanks Thalia..I have them all but only have read Mists of Avalon...is it important to read them in order? have you read them all? are other characters in the other books?"

The books cover more than a generation so I'm not sure if the same characters are in all the books but I should think there would definetly be overlap and continuaty. Mists is definietly a stand alone should you choose, and I'm sure Forest House was too. I can't remember Lady enough to say. I'm really looking forward to this little bit of a fantasy binge, lol

message 12: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool | 61 comments Read this ages ago - I'm pretty sure I own a copy, but it may well be in the loft at my parent's house. Or maybe it has passed from my ownership. I'm not keen to re-read as I have so many books in my tbr list that is seems a bit of a waste to read something again... but this is a great book. I had no idea it was part of a sequence. I may have to start chomping my way through the earlier books in the series instead!

message 13: by Kate. (new)

Kate. | 174 comments I will join in too..another excuse to buy a book

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

This read sounds like fun! I'm going to try to get a copy :)

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 13 comments Thanks Thalia...The fall of Alantis I dont have! must get that one...I thought the Priestess of Avalon was the last book & Avalon was after Lady of Avalon..so where dose the new book fit in coming out? I assume this is by timeline? always wanted to read these others as well.

message 16: by Tina (new)

Tina I'm definitely in! I've been wanting to read this forever, but it keeps getting pushed back by other books in my TBR. Thanks for setting a date :)

message 17: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 28 comments I'll join too! I recently bought this book but I know it'll be awhile before I get around to it.

Jennifer (jennifertudor) | 726 comments Mod
I can't even begin to tell you why I love it so much... aside from saying it's HF, there's a love story, there's magic and history and drama and betrayal and friendship and... oh, it's just so fantastic! AND it's about Arthur!

message 21: by Kate. (new)

Kate. | 174 comments And its almost a 1000 pages !! ahahahaha

message 23: by Kate. (new)

Kate. | 174 comments We certainly do Lyn. We have to have some self restrain and not over commit again. aarrrrr...Its so hard.

message 26: by Elise (new)

Elise (elisebeth) I'm just glad I have two 4 hour flights in January so I can read it on the plane and hopefully those thousand pages will go by easily.
I am so excited to read this! My friend is currently reading it and she adores it so much.

AWESOME Karla. So glad to see you here.
I cant wait to read it with you. Im going to ask for this one for Christmas. Its great getting lost in a mammoth book.

message 28: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 6 comments Ok all! I just rec'd Mists of Avalon and holy cinder block its long! I'm going to need an extra hand to hold it up HEAVY! Had no idea holding it will be a work out on my wrists.
Kate I'm actually very excited to get carried away into it looking forward to reading a book written in a women's POV telling the story of King Arthur. Reading the back of the book has me hyped up to begin!

message 29: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 6 comments Oh I forgot to ask has anyone seen the mini series on TNT? I see it advertised on my book and was unaware of it. If it is good I'll have to rent it next year to supplement the story after reading it.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 1550 comments Mod
I didn't know about the mini-series either, Karla. I will have to check that out after we read the book.

I don't remember much about it but I did see it. It's not as good as the book but that's not surprising I guess...

Kate. | 174 comments Gotta love these bricks we keep reading !!

message 33: by Thalia (new)

Thalia | 64 comments I think I know the one you mean, there is a DVD based on Mists that stars Juliana Margulies called the Mists of Avalon. While I would find it very difficult to do mists, I think the show did a respecatable version of the book.

message 34: by Paula (new)

Paula Ohhh! I started reading Mists ages ago and got wrapped up in it like a foggy dream... then all of a sudden woke out of it and never finished it. I so wish I could join in, but I'm getting married in January so probably shouldn't commit (no pun intended). However, considering length, hopefully in February the group will be at the point where I left off, and I could join in then?

message 35: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (crescentgaia) I am going to join in with everyone for this read. Mists has been sitting on my bookshelf for a while now, so I'll be happy to read. :)

Now I just have to not get the book and start reading now.

Congratualations on getting married Paula.
Dont worry about missing out, some of us read like snails especially the big ones so im sure there will be a few still reading it in February

message 37: by Elise (new)

Elise (elisebeth) I will no doubt still be reading it in February :)

message 38: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 6 comments I have committed to three books in January so I may still be reading it in February myself! I hope to be finished though I usually read about 100 or so pages a day when I'm reading a long book. I set little daily goals like that maybe that's silly but I get mad when I fall behind my little goals....now if I would just set a goal to clean out the garage!

Congrats Paula, and don't worry, I, for one, am a SLOW reader when it comes to big books (ask Kate and Jennifer), so I'm pretty sure I will not be finished, lol.

Jennifer (jennifertudor) | 726 comments Mod
Yup, we're all in good company there!

message 42: by Paula (new)

Paula Thanks, all :) Glad to find a group who is excited to read Mists and hope to see everyone in February! :)

message 43: by Thalia (new)

Thalia | 64 comments In anticipation of reading Mists in January, I've started the series. I just finished The Fall of Atlantisand started Ancestors of Avalon last night. Anyone else doing some of the "prequels"?

message 44: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 6 comments Good idea Thalia! I didn't know much background info. On this book so I didn't read any of these. I'm busy with group reads I've committed to for December so I know I won't be able to.

message 45: by Lyn (Readinghearts), The mod of last resort/Mod #3 (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 1550 comments Mod
I don't think I have time, Thalia, but I wish I could. I will have to go back to the prequels after, lol. But I have my copy of Mists sitting here ready to go for January.

message 46: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (crescentgaia) I don't have any of the prequels and just don't have the time right now either. I can't wait for January to read Mists though.

message 47: by Thalia (new)

Thalia | 64 comments Months away no longer, Tomorrow is January!!!! So who's in? I completed my mission to read the 7 prequels (done as of last night). I have one book club book to read (incidently it's arthurian too - The Pendragon) first and then onto Mists!!!!

message 48: by ladywallingford (new)
