RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, I know I'm supposed to like salad, but sometimes I don't. How do you guys make salad actually taste good, and not, like, just a sliver of iceberg lettuce and tomato or something?

Also, salad dressing is gross. I almost always like salad "straight". Besides, some salad dressing is bad for you. However, a local restaurant makes these potatoes with blue cheese dressing that are so good they almost make me cry.

Salad, salad dressing comments?

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i eat salad a lot at home. my wife buys all kinds of greens and lettuce and crap and then we put stuff from our garden in it. i always put blue cheese crumbles, dried cranberries and walnuts or almonds on it also and then top with a vinaigrette (is that spelled right?) kind of dressing. right now my fav is paul newman's raspberry vinaigrette

message 3: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I've never been a big salad dressing fan. I can eat a good salad without it. But there are some good dressings.

We had salad with every meal growing up, but I only make one or two a week.
The trick to make it taste good is extra stuff: nuts, seeds, cheese, berries, avocado, beans, etc...

Zu makes a really good avocado-lime dressing.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments If it's got avocado in it, I'm happy. Blue cheese crumbles are good, too.

Brittomart I love salad dressing. Yummmmm

I like my salad with spinach leaves. Spinach is the best.

Félix (habitseven) Baby spinach with hot bacon dressing, please.

Sarah | 13814 comments Which one, Kevin? I don't think you're supposed to eat them all together.

message 9: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Aug 11, 2010 12:17PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) One of my favorite salads that I make has chopped chicken, red beans, corn, avocado, tomatoes, cheese, egg and a few crushed frito chips on top. The lettuce is usually romaine, but I've used the cheap head lettuce before too. I eat this as a meal, not a side, because it's hearty.

The dressing is a combination of low fat sour cream, buttermilk, and a few herbs/spices.

Another good salad has romaine, toasted almonds and strawberries. The dressing is homemade balsamic vinegar one (although I'm sure bottled would work fine) whisked together with a couple spoonfuls of strawberry jam.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments oh, i thought it was a mongo salad. just set the stuff out and we'll have a salad bar

It depends. I mean, most storebought salad dressing is crappy. And way too thick. It's a good consistency to put on a baked potato, but not on lettuce. But I also don't like my salad naked. It needs something.

I'm often too lazy to make my own salad dressing so what I'll usually do is take whatever storebought dressing I have and use it as a base for something lighter and more liquid. I'll dilute it with olive oil or water, or both, and throw in some good quality soy sauce. And stir.

I also love to throw something hot, like sauteed mushrooms, over a spinach or even just romaine salad.

Mushroom juice would also make a great addition to a salad dressing.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I LOOOOVE salad. I love fresh greens!

I add baby cucumbers to all my salads (unless it's just a tomato salad). They're super crunchy and refreshing. I add fresh herbs, any kind, to my salads... always - green onion, basil, italian parsley, cilantro... I'll mix the herbs in with the lettuce beforehand... and a bit of spinach... and sometimes a combination of all the above

I also like watercress on my salads, briny veggies (pickles, olives, giardiniera, capers, artichoke hearts, hearts of palm), nuts, craisins, sprouts on my salad. Unfortunately, the sprouts spoil quickly.

If I use the briny veggies, I don't need a dressing... just maybe a bit of lemon juice or vinegar.

My family makes the same salad every time we dine together at home - romaine lettuce, thickly sliced red onion (so my bro can pick them out), diced tomato, cucumbers, bell pepper, and feta... and right before dinner is served, we add a small bit of Good Seasonings Italian dressing and sprinkle a smidge of sea salt and cracked pepper.

My mother would make THE best cucumber salad when I was growing up - cucs, sour cream, a smidge of garlic salt, a splash of lemon juice, black pepper... HOOOMG, and then I discovered it's awfully similar to tzatziki.

During the summertime, I'll make a strawberry salad with sliced strawberries, spinach, some grated romano, walnut pieces, and a bit of strawberry vinaigrette.

I love dressings - the only ones I won't touch - honey mustard, anything chipotle, or anything tomato or mayo based.

I have a relative of the young variety who eats a lot of salad. Apparently he eats so much salad because he loves salad dressing. If he could, he would drink the whole bottle of salad dressing. The young are amusing!

Susan | 6406 comments I love salads. I also love ranch dressing. It has to be Naturally Fresh ranch dressing if it is store bought. I try not to buy it often because I have been doing my best to scale back on my ranch dressing consumption. It is thick but that is okay since I am lazy with the salad spinner and end up with extra water on my lettuce which helps with thinning and dispersing the dressing. I also make a light version of ranch dressing which is less than 250 calories for an 8 oz. jar. Yes, the whole jar. I like a mesclun if store bought or if the lettuce I planted is not a good crop. Romaine if the mesclun looks brown or is not on sale. Then I load up that baby. Onions, tomatoes, carrots, cukes, mushrooms, chickpeas or black beans and avocado are all good in a salad. I also like to sprinkle some sunflower seeds or a few tortilla chips crushed up for some crunch.

I would try most of the salads above, they sound so good. I think I could happily die in the kitchen of Bdubs.

Riona (rionafaith) | 488 comments I mostly only like salads if they have lots of extra stuff in them: chopped chicken, olives, beans, hard boiled egg, hearts of palm, artichoke hearts, avocado, beets, candied nuts, cheese, everything. Spinach is my salad green of choice. And I love the creamy dressings that are terrible for you.

Yeah, my salads aren't that healthy.

I prefer salads with stuff, too. A lettuce only salad just cannot hold my attention.

In general I like my ice cream the same way. I rarely ever like a plain ice cream. About the plainest I am willing to go is mint chocolate chip. But that's another thread! The ice cream thread!

Me too! Is there an ice cream thread? I must find it and gush about my love for chunk-filled ice cream with a million toppings there.

You know what's good is couscous with three bean salad. Buy a can of three bean salad (which I LOVE), drain and reserve the liquid. Boil the amount of water you need for the couscous including the bean liquid. Make the couscous. Toss it with the three bean salad. YUM.

message 22: by evie (new)

evie (ecie) | 4437 comments I don't like salad for my evening meal during the week. I have it most days for lunch at work, usually the traditional garden salad. I like the little sweet tomatoes at the moment.

I agree. I like a hearty dinner, usually. Of course, a big salad with a lot of stuff in it can be hearty. But I usually prefer a hot dinner.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments If I'm eating a salad for lunch, I like it with sunflower seeds and bell peppers and onions and bacon and swiss cheese. I make my own lemon, garlic, and olive oil dressing. Very tasty.

I like salads in small amounts and very rarely. Sweeter eats a salad nearly every night and I really couldn't do that to my colon.

It makes it work. I'd rather eat things that pass through undigested, like corn.

Did your mom ever used to buy those envelopes of "salad dressing mix" to which you would add a cup of "salad oil"? Like, you cannot go to the store and buy "salad oil," can you? It's just oil. My mother had never heard of olive oil, most likely, so she would have used vegetable oil.

message 37: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I don't think you are this interested. I think you are trying to avoid looking at the peen in the other thread. its ok. Just look at the meatus.

message 38: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
I already did. How many times do you want me to look at it?

message 39: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
If you think I am not interested in envelopes of salad dressing mix, you are underestimating my ability to be interested by prepackaged foodstuffs of earlier decades.

message 40: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
My mom did buy those envelopes of salad dressing mix. We had a special little carafe that was just for shaking the oil and the mix.
