This is where you can chat about books or anything you feel like talking about.

Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 36 comments Does anyone feel that using your email address book to invite friends to gr is spamming?

message 5: by Frozenwaffle (new)

Frozenwaffle Personally I don't like inviting or being invited to any site, it gets annoying because people overdo it so much.

In these times when everybody is on facebook, regarding goodreads I'd rather use the facebook app to make goodreads known through my own usage - if people are interested, they will investigate for themselves!

Nicolle | 343 comments Mod
I only ever 'invite' people I know in person. I might say to a friend who likes books "hey, have you checked out the website Goodreads?..." But in general I don't know people who like books so much.

I rarely invite anyone, but don't mind invitations. If I don't want to join, I don't. The one that gets to me is the one in a foreign language. I've gotten it twice. :-)

Just to let everyone who hasn't voted know that there is a poll for a group read.

Hi Joseph! :D Nice to see you here.

Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 36 comments Nice to see you too Nicolle!

Anyone take science fiction seriously?

The world won't be satisfied until the computers are attached to our heads with wires and sucking on our brains!

Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 36 comments Anyone ask if I don't already have wires coming out of my head?

If you can't beat 'em join 'em.

I am looking into creating my own CGI. The software that made movies and animation cheap.

Golden Age of Television is forgotten. Dead and buried in an unmarked grave.

If I can afford the software I can crank out videos that will rot other people's minds worse than comic books did to the kids in the 1950's

My name tag for work says bookaholic, and I work at Tim Hortons which is a coffee shop chain here in Canada and the States, and a lot of customers and I talk about books! I get a lot of great recommendations!

Wondering,

Do folks in coffee shops usually share the same tastes in the books they read? Or does interest tend to vary?

Any die hard classic book readers?

(Coffee is always great!)

Can't say I like coffee. I really do hate it.

Even with 3 scoops of sugar and cream?

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

I have met one or two classics fans, but most talk about new books

Me, too. Several months ago, I began to think that maybe I should give it up as it's probably not good for me ... then I read that it helps prevent strokes (I think it was strokes). So now I happily indulge in my addiction, knowing that I am actually doing my body some good! LOL

Yep! Currently they are saying you can have up to 4 cups a day. After that, it's not so good. I try to keep my intake to 2 maybe 3. Enjoy! :)

Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 36 comments I haven't had coffee in four days. I know I eventually be back on it.

No way! I don't like things which are sweet which shouldn't be. For example tea (take half a teaspoon), carrots, sweet potato, parsnips, etc.
I think it tastes horrible, though I admit it smells divine.

So did you see that Goodreads is joining up with Amazon? What do you think about it? Joseph, I'm especially interested in your thoughts? :-)

I guess I'm happy for GR, but sad that once again Amazon steps in with the big bucks. And I own a Kindle Fire. I just find it disappointing on some level.

I'm not entirely sure what exactly it means for everyday use of Goodreads to be honest. Maybe I'm just being slow?

I will be happy to be able to manage my kindle editions on GR.

I purchase from amazon a lot, kitchenware, vitamins and loads of stuff aside from books

I hope all these companies will maintain a healthy competition and keep prices competitive.

There are monopoly laws in the US. (Stopped AT&T from getting too much control in the early 1980's)

message 29: by Louise (new)

Louise I'm really disapointed. Seriously considering no longer reviewing here and simply rating and linking to the review on my own blog instead.

I probably won't do it (yet) but I'm not happy. The reason I loved goodreads so much was that it was independent. I hate the idea of the Amazon monopoly ruining it. Also they're tax dodging slimeballs.

Yes amazon Purchased GRs!

Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 36 comments It could have been Disney

Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 36 comments The Amazons may kill off all the males, save for a few to use for breeding purposes and then gather all the young strong females to be conditioned as warriors.

Or worse they may change the format of the website to be like Facebook!

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't know anything about Amazon buying GR...Do you think that they are going to make it worse or better?? I would think better because we would have more book links and stuff???

Hahahaha...I drink about a pot or so a day!!! Oooops

Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 36 comments Teri-lynn wrote: "I don't know anything about Amazon buying GR...Do you think that they are going to make it worse or better?? I would think better because we would have more book links and stuff???"

I am usually uncomfortable with change. Links to books and stuff is nice yet a change to the structure of the website like what happened in myspace I would not like.

When I make coffee it is usually by the pot and if there is no one else around to drink it I will. With the coffee, I have trouble avoiding refined sugar. And I remember hearing somewhere it may eventually lead to problems with your joints.

message 36: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) | 939 comments Mod
Could explain my joint issues. Most of the pain comes from spinal stenosis, but am still getting by with OTC pain meds. Have to be very careful with them ... they can do a lot of damage.

Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 36 comments I don't think anything available today can beat codeine. It is too inexpensive works to well. Drug companies would rather replace it with something else synthetic for a bigger profit.

In the 1800 opiates could be purchased in the drugstore. I am sure there were problems with addiction, though I have not come across it much in my readings.

It also seems that earlier man suffered a lot less of the common problems of recent man.

Yep, a lot of our ailments today didn't exist before.

Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 36 comments Nicolle wrote: "Yep, a lot of our ailments today didn't exist before."

We reading Brave New World by chance?

message 40: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) | 939 comments Mod
I had never heard of spinal stenosis until my mother was diagnosed a few years ago. I'd been complaining of pain in my legs mostly for a long time. Finally last spring, my dr said 'Maybe you have spinal stenosis' and I was tested. I imagine my mother had it for a long time, too, just went undiagnosed. It's a guessing game with the doctors.

My husband has PKD so we're looking at dialysis at some point in his future, but is doing pretty well with the disease so far. His younger brother also has it and is in much worse shape.

Does anyone want to replace me as a moderator? I'm so bad at creating group reads and things in this group!!

message 46: by Joseph “Millennium Man” (last edited Jan 25, 2014 07:15PM) (new)

Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 36 comments Don't let the GR librarians know that I have for now abandoned books. I am now focused on a radio control hobby. Been working on model airplanes instead of reading.
and
How can you tell if we are all fictional characters? We could all be fictional characters in a story that exists in some author's mind? Maybe the fictional worlds are the only real ones in this universe? We may all be trapped in an episode of Dr Who! Would anyone know the difference? What would be the difference?

(No, I don't think it a good idea to replace yourself as moderator!)

I was thinking that we could start group reads on a day other than 1st of the month as in another group we have done this to help with multiple group reads.

Nicolle cannot be replaced!! I'm just going to help. I believe we'll be helping each other. :-)

Nicolle, were you thinking of the middle of the month? If we were to set it for the 15th or the 20th, I could take nominations for a few days and then do a poll. There might be time to get one planned for later this month. I'll get on my PC and set up a thread for nominations.

message 50: by Vicky (new)

Vicky | 19 comments I just read through the 100 books to read. One of the books on the list is The Bible. How is this supposed to be read? It's not exactly something that's good to read from front to back. At least I don't think so. Is it appropriate to include this book on the list?
