Tara Wowra (fynreader) | 10 comments first you need to find a bomb shelter-they are usually in the area of the city that houses city government. then you have to find an artiesian well, the water will smell like rotten eggs but it is purified by gravity and they are usually very deep so the water will be clean and unpolluted. then you have to round up all the medical supplies you can find. then hit the army surplus store for MREs and any sort of dehydrated food stuffs. The theory is that everything falls apart quickly so and you are the only one thinking clearly. Then hit the armory-usually near government unless you live in a city that has a military base near it. Just remember-water is more important than anything else because you can't last more than three days without it. Then shelter, then food, then weapons, then madical supplies. Hopefully you can team up with someone who is well versed in weapons, hunting and/or self defence tactics. How is that for a start?

message 8: by Tara (new)

Tara Wowra (fynreader) | 10 comments The bomb shelter is good because it is defencible and it will already have some provisions in there to hold you over till you can get more.

message 9: by Philip (new)

Philip | 15 comments A bomb shelter would be a horrible idea. It has only one entrance and it is located in the city -- which is where most of the zombies will be. Once you lock yourself in there you would be safe until your food and water ran out -- and then what? You would end up having to fight your way past thousands of zombies to find a new hiding spot.

Stay outside of the city where the population is sparse.

Philip | 15 comments One thing movies always get wrong... if you come from a small town you know that not very many people die in any average day in a small down. Usually a grand total of NONE. That means that small towns will remain mostly untouched by the zombie plague. The towns will begin to empty out as people start to leave the area to forage for supplies, but a TON more people will survive in rural areas than typcially portrayed in most movies/novels.

I say it should be underground. You will find more water and you have easy accsess to aboveground resulting in food.

Ian Sandusky (idgs) | 59 comments Underground locations are actually poor choices during a zombie siege. If your bunker is infiltrated, you have a very low probability for escape, as you can't exactly tunnel your way out.

Hiding up somewhere off the ground is a better choice.

The Official Zombie Handbook (UK was a great resource for me - it got a lot more in-depth than the Max Brooks version.

Tony Faville | 10 comments Well, I would open my gun safe, pull out and make ready my weapons of choice, check the provisions I already have on hand, make sure my rainwater collection system is operating correctly, barricade the doors and windows of my home until the idiots outside have done all the damage they can do to the zeds and then ultimately themselves, and then venture forth for additional supplies if and when the time comes.

how about if your gun gets jammed?
what would you use as a replacement"

In the event of a weapons failure you should always have a backup. I have multiple firearms for backup along with a handful of blades and blunt instruments.

I also train extensively with my weapons of choice and properly maintain them, greatly reducing the risk of failures.

Not a teenager here with a katana he bought off of QVC. Nope, I am an older guy, combat veteran, shooter for 30+ years, trained in many weapons and hand to hand arts, and with at least 6 months worth of provisions in my home.

Not just prepared for zombies, but for any civil unrest that intends to disrupt my way of life. ;)

Spoken like a true survivalist - amen, good sir!

While we are all obviously avid lovers of the zombie genre, many with far more brain power than I applaud the whole 'zombie survival' movement, as it educates people in real, applicable subjects that can greatly aid survival in more common, 'mundane' situations.

Survivalism is being prepared for anything that may cause a disturbance in daily life - be it a power-outage, flood, civil war, or - you guessed it, zom-pocaylpse!

While we all love to stash away goodies in the event the dead actually begin to rise (or whatever your interpretation may be) it is important to note that if all you have are a variety of impact and edged weapons accompanied by a textbook knowledge of dispatching ghouls, any other situation may knock you off your horse before the infection even sweeps the land.

Remember, zom-pocalpyse means complete collapse of society - the worst of the worst. Knowing how to combat the dead and maintaining a fortified location will only get you so far if you have no long-term contingency plans for waste disposal, cultivation of crops / livestock, emergency medical treatment, procurement of further supplies, and the like.

Personally, because I'm absolutely borderline insane, have even begun to consider what strains of livestock will be best suited to surviving in the end of days. Hell, who knows if that pretty dairy cow will be better suited to survival in the harsh climate of the zombie apocalypse compared to the ugly old beef cattle we rear on my parent's northern farm.

Knowledge is power - and any education is better than none!

On a postive note, these higher thinkers have been rather impressed with the recent interest in survivalism, as the market has seen a boom not witnessed since the stockpiling by individuals during the Cold War, when the threat of a nuclear war was all too real.

In any case, keep learning, because you never know - tomorrow just may be the day that teeth gnash at your throat!

Cheers,

IDGS

James (barron262) Dont forget that when you are raiding for supplies to not forget weapon sharpeners. Think if you have to constantly hack heads, blades will dull and most people will over look those minor details in the initial smash and grab for weapons. Also, even if rural areas fare well during the beginning of the outbreak. They will get the spill off from the people trying to escape the cities and you know some will be infected. Best is too find an area with fertile soil and possibly somewhere high and easily defensible. But in the end you just have to keep your head.... and not listen to government officials, that never works out ;)

Richard (sarahsdad) | 9 comments Go up, not down.
6.2 miles away is an office building built atop an open 6 level garage. Think defense.
Within a mile of this refuge is 1 Walmart with garden center, 1 Sams, 1 Price Club, 1 Home Depot, 1 large grocery store, 1 Best Buy, 1 Target, 1 Kmart, 4 car dealers, 1 huge two acre sporting goods store, 2 liquor stores (guns and booze, heyah), a quarry operation (heavy earth movers could come in handy in so many ways), and a drilling outfitter (for water wells). The nearest hospital is 5 miles but that's where early cases will be concentrated.
I don't want you all to think I put too much thought into this ...

Nice.... I think you've put just the RIGHT amount of thought into it!
