This chapter starts with discussion why the poem translations were shown just before the start of this chapter. It does a nice job of explaining them, how they can be "chunked", and how a native language reader would apply associations and meaning to them.
The MIT videos do an exercise just like the Class association diagram picture from this chapter. The MIT video exercise has a diagram that goes something like Newton -> Apple -> Adam/Eve -> God.
This chapter had the ASU-USA mapping example, which I found very well done. I find some irony (and self-reference) in how that example would be translated to other language versions of this book.
I really liked how the Poem Translations got tied in to isomorphic software written in different high level languages. I did not see that coming, but I probably should have. I thought this chapter was diverging from software concepts until that part, which I was happy to see.
This was the first time I had heard the term "etherware".
The symbols becoming subsystems seems to be a major theme and jump in the thought hierarchy. I liked the part about the possible versus impossible dreams. That reminds me a lot of the provable versus improvable true statements from other parts in the book.
I liked the Lucas section. Hofstadter's paragraph following the Lucas section is exactly what I was thinking while reading through the passage. Hofstadter also speaks highly of Lucas even though he mentions Lucas' conclusions as different from his own, which I found refreshingly respectful.
