Hi Everyone!

The easiest way to track your books is to start a topic with your name on it and keep the list of read books there. You can post a link to the book and/or author if you'd like.

Good Luck!

Mikela First book of challenge - 4:50 From Paddington by Agatha Christie. First read this book about 20 years ago and found myself enjoying it again after all this time.

Hello, Mikela, and welcome to the group! We won't be ready for official "books read" postings until January 1. Sorry for the confusion.

I'll be happy to help you set up a discussion where you can document the books you've read in 2011 just after the new year.

Glad to have you here!

message 4: by Linda (new)

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) Hi Jennifer, was this group created just for the challange and to be used to list the books that you are reading for 2011? I hope this is not a crazy question. I just want to make sure that I understand. thanks!

Jennifer Strand (jenniferstrand) | 155 comments Mod
Hi, Linda! Welcome aboard!

Not a crazy question at all. Yes, this group exists to track books read in 2011. I set it up a little early so people could get signed up. We've had a great response and we're glad to have you join us. I will help you set up a discussion thread where you can post your 2011 books just after the new year.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. Happy to help!

Jen

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) Thank you for the information, I have never tracked the books I have read before and thought it would be a cool thing to do for 2011.

message 7: by Lesley (new)

Lesley | 149 comments Yippee, Jennifer! I was hoping we would continue this book challenge... I feel like those in the 2010 challenge are all dear friends now and I so look forward to see what everyone is reading.

message 8: by Jen (new)

Jen | 90 comments I'm so excited that we are doing this again! I totally fell off the ball these last few months, but now that I'm used to being back in school hopefully I'll manage to accomplish the goal next year!

I agree with you Lesley, I feel like I made friends this year. I hope everyone else sticks with us!

YAY for book friends! They're the best kind.

message 10: by Judy (new)

Judy I'm happy to join this group. And thanks for allowing audio books. I spend so much time in my van that I feel lost without an audio book. I will begin to post books after January 1st.

message 11: by Amber (new)

Amber (memyshelfandi) | 69 comments So 2 books a week. Meh, I don't need to clean or cook for a year. Right?

BRING IT ON! :0)

message 12: by Jen (new)

Jen | 90 comments Absolutely, Amber! Love it

message 13: by Nikki (new)

Nikki | 84 comments Hi Everyone!! I'm Nikki and I'm a book addict (heehee) I was in the 2010 challange. Right now I am finishing my last 2 books to achieve my 104 books(2010)!! Since I started a little late last year I'm going to try and out do myself in 2011 and break whatever I achieve this year. Can't wait to start...there a lot of great books coming out next spring!! And 2010 ended on a high note with Richelle Mead's last VA book Last Sacfrifice!

message 14: by Lesley (new)

Lesley | 149 comments Nikki~ is that another vampire series???

message 15: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Strand (jenniferstrand) | 155 comments Mod
Judy, I'd be lost without audio books, too. I drive about 1.5 hours everyday and get a lot of "reading" done that way. Welcome to the group!

So excited to have almost everyone from 2010 join this group and LOVE to see the new faces! It's going to be a great year of reading!

message 16: by Amber (new)

Amber (memyshelfandi) | 69 comments @Lesley - i love the "Is that another vampire series" for some reason even though I'm not sure what tone of voice you meant it in I heard it in my family's which emphasized the ANOTHER???? LOL.

I put the following in my list area but...just in case: I added it up and if I buy all the books at Half Priced for $7 that means 104 books will be $728! I really need to get that Nook color I'm dying for. You can share books with anyone around the world with it...anyone else here have a nook of any type? The E-reader from Barnes and Noble?

message 17: by Linda (new)

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) Yes, I have the original Nook and I love it!!! I have had it for about 4 months, I don't have a lot of books downloaded yet, but I am getting there. I still find myself purchasing actual books, which I knew would happen, but I am getting there.

message 18: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 10, 2010 11:54AM) (new)

I'm looking forward to the 104 BOOKS Challenge.:)
Can I post as I go? I'll have a partical list ready towards the end of the month.

OMG NicoleMichele!!!! yes I have, and I plan to do just that. I was looking at the library one and you can get the wallpaper to match as well. I was so excited when one of the B&N salesrep told me about it, he had one on his Nook so I got a chance to see it in person, the skins are really nice.

Wow, look at all the new members! This is fantastic! Cool to see reading lists popping up, too.

@Barb, Yes, please do post as you go! The only rule here is that the book has to have been finished in 2011. We all love to see progress as it happens.

All this talk of Nook's has me rethinking my Christmas wish list...

Amber~ the members of the 2010 group are all hooked on vampire books... I like to give them a hard time :)

message 23: by Mikela (new)

Mikela I hesitate to put a list here as it will be changed in a month with books constantly being added or removed. Currently I read on average 6 books a week - yes, I have no other life. My main problem with listing is obtaining the books on my "to-read" list. Books on the go right now are Fingerprints of the Gods and Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed. I'll have both finished before the challenge begins. Are we supposed to give a reading list before the challenge or just note completed books and give a report on each one read. I'm new to this so apologize for asking perhaps a less than brilliant question.

message 24: by Jen (new)

Jen | 90 comments Hi Mikela! You can just post each book as you finish it. I don't have a concrete to-read list, I rarely know what book is coming next for me. :). I don't even really report on the books much, a lot of the fun I had last year was asking people what they thought of certain books. Though if you want to let us know how you liked each one, I'll definitely be reading those to find something new!

message 25: by Erin E (new)

Erin E (elizamc) I have a Kobo and I enjoy it, but it still has too many quirks and I would give anything to have a Libre or Sony instead (Despite Sony's constant need to over charge for their product...)

I am not sure that I will plan a list out, because when I plan I tend not to follow... Question? I am intending to take at least two classes this comming semester - Can text books be counted?

Just to clear up any confusion:

It is not necessary to create a reading list in the group. Some people may find it useful and are encouraged to do so. Don't feel like you have to, though. I personally track my to be read pile outside of this group right in my Goodreads account.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

I also joined the Romance Reading group but want to get all my other books read too. Can't stick to just one genre. So many books, so little time "sigh".

message 29: by Nikki (new)

Nikki | 84 comments Lesley wrote: "Nikki~ is that another vampire series???"

Lol! Yes Lesley it's another vampire series...so good. I did get in a few none vamp books though. The most recent one "Love is the Higher Law" was really good, it is about 3 young adults who are in NY during 9/11. I recommend this book to anyone.

message 30: by Amber (new)

Amber (memyshelfandi) | 69 comments so question - since this thread is called STart Your List Here, and we;re all talking in it will will just edit one of our previous posts and fill in with the books? Or comment a new one each time we complete a books??? I'm confused....but that's normal.....lol

message 31: by Nikki (new)

Nikki | 84 comments NicoleMichele, thanks for the info on the Nook. I was thinking of getting one for Christmas but was going to get the color. I'll have to check them out and maybe rethink my plan and go with the $149 one. Does it do everything else the color Nook does though? I'm going to check them out on Friday.

message 32: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Strand (jenniferstrand) | 155 comments Mod
Amber, You'll start a new discussion called, "Amber's Vamp Books (even though I don't like vamp books)" or something similar. Then every time you finish a book, you'll add a new comment to that discussion. Does that make sense? Here's a link to my list from last year. Check it out and see if that helps:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

I can help you set this up next time I see you, too.

message 33: by Amber (new)

Amber (memyshelfandi) | 69 comments @Jen seriously that made me laugh so hard coffee nearly came out of my nose! DO you know me or what!? LOL!!!!

message 34: by Erin E (new)

Erin E (elizamc) *gasp* lol, if you titled your list like that I'll know where to look for a new vampire fix... :oD

message 35: by Lara (new)

Lara Searcy (larasearcy) I think we all started our own "threads" for our own lists... so maybe this thread can be retitled for just general information and conversation!?

message 36: by Linda (new)

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) Hi Jen! I'm taking you up on your offer, hopefully this won't sound too crazy, how do i set up my read list, I just want to add them as I'm reading, I don't want to create a list before hand, I change my mind consistently!! :)

message 37: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Strand (jenniferstrand) | 155 comments Mod
Welcome, Linda and Lara! Glad to have you guys here!

Linda, to start your list, you'll want to start a new discussion and give it a meaningful title. Add a new message under that discussion to post your books read updates. Let me know if you need any assistance and I'll be happy to help you with that.

Also, don't feel like you have to create a "to read" list in addition to your "read" list. Some readers have done so and may find it useful, but it is by no means necessary. I manage my "to read" list in my user profile and will not be creating such a list here.

Please let me know if the instructions are unclear. Thanks again for joining us! Looking forward to see your progress!

message 38: by Mikela (new)

Mikela I'm so glad that I joined this group. Just looking at what everyone is reading is introducing me to books that out of the normal for me. This year I'm going to try books of usually overlooked genres and by different authors.

message 39: by Amber (new)

Amber (memyshelfandi) | 69 comments NicoleMichele wrote: "I told my husband I was going to switch my Nook's skin every Christmas and he just laughed. LOL Check out this site that sells high quality, unique covers. I wish I saw these before I purchased ..."

OMG those are soo cool! I'm having trouble finding a good case for my nook color!

message 40: by Diane (new)

Diane (readergirl235) Okay, first book of the year, (and yes, it DID come off my bookshelf) Salting Roses, by Lorelle Marinello. I got it as a freebie through librarything.com, so I did the requisite read and review. It was okay--3 stars. I just didn't find anything special or exceptional about it. If I had it to do over again, it wouldn't have spent my time
on it.

P.S. Hope I'm doing this right, I'm still a little unclear about how this listing/logging thing works.

message 41: by Britney (new)

Britney (tarheels) I just joined this group and I am excited. I am an avid reader. 104 books sounds reasonable. Hopefully I will do more than that. I have found out that I read more now that I have a Nook. Looking forward to seeing what everyone else is reading.

message 42: by Diane (new)

Diane (readergirl235) What's a Nook?

message 43: by Judy (new)

Judy The ereader that is available from Barnes and Noble. My friend has one and really likes it. I have a Kindle and am completely devoted to it.

message 44: by Jen (new)

Jen | 90 comments I've been wanting an eReader, and was absolutely gung-ho convinced I want a Kindle, but I found out yesterday that the ebooks you can borrow from the public library are not compatible with Kindles. The format isn't supported, or some other horrible tech-speak reason. I'm looking at the Nook or Sony eReader instead, now. Does anyone here have the Sony? I know we've got quite a few Nook devotees.

Hi Michelle! You'll want to track your books in a separate discussion so you can keep them all together.

The instructions on this thread are not very clear and I'll be sure to revise them next year. Do you know how to make a new discussion? If not, I'll be happy to help you out.

message 48: by Diane (new)

Diane (readergirl235) Wow, so many of you have electronic readers . . . . I have been staunchly against them. I just like the weight and feel of a book in my hand, turning the pages, smelling the paper and ink or library mustiness. I love to see them lined up on my bulging shelves with their colorful covers and artwork. I'm intrigued. What is it about the electronic readers that you all like so much? What benefit could I find in one that books wouldn't offer?

message 49: by Jen (new)

Jen | 90 comments I love hard copy books, don't get me wrong. I never intend on giving those up, I love seeing a bookcase stuffed with books, and piles of them on my window ledge. I like the way old books feel, with beautiful endpapers and cloth bindings.

But I read really fast, and I travel a lot. When I go visit my family for a few days I end up bringing 3 or 4 books with me, which takes up lots of valuable carry-on space, and it just gets heavy. I would love to be able to go traveling with just one book-sized item, but have thousands available when I finish my current one.
Plus, most of the books I read I borrow from the library. I rarely buy books, because if I did a)I'd be broke and b) I wouldn't have anywhere to put them all. Since I don't intend on keeping them anyway, not having a hard copy wouldn't be a problem, really. If I really LOVE a book I buy it, and I would continue doing that even after getting an eReader. But it would be nice to never have overdue fines because I couldn't find that copy I borrowed and read 3 weeks ago and my son decided to reshelve in his bookcase. :)

message 50: by Marie (new)

Marie Ivarsson (MarieIvarsson) | 30 comments Hi everyone!
I found this group on recommendation from Nikki, and it seems like a really fun challenge and such a fun group. :-)

I have a question. I can pretty much say now already that I will never be able to read 104 books in one year, so is it still okay to join the group? I have no idea how many books I've read at the most in a year, but I know it's nowhere near 100 books. I'm too slow a reader, and have too many side interests and projects going on. lol

Also, from reading some of the discussions, I understand that re-reads count as well, because I'll be doing some of that this year.
