I LOVED the musical & the movie..but the "book" really involves you into Eriks life (at least Susan Kay's book) its been WAY too many years since Ive read the "classic original"

Then the one Im almost finished with I highly recommend! III have a review soon for it..but for a "first-time" read Id go with this one its very close to the original..just have kleenix handy.

I believe you will enjoy Leroux's book and it will give you a great appreciation for its progeny as a result.

Leroux was a journalist, and he had an acerbic wit. POTO is a stinging social commentary about Parisian society and what Leroux saw as its shallowness. He wraps the entire thing in a gothic horror novel (it is NOT a romance). What he does, beautifully, is highlight the social strata of Paris -- and show the logical end-result of a lifetime of bullying in someone who is not accepted there because of something over which he has no control.

Their B&N Classics series (small hardback editions of public domain books) had a fairly nice translation. If all else fails, you can read it for free on-line at this link:

IMO, having read both, the one with the antique cover is a better translation. :-)

Are you talking about the original version Catherine?
I didnt care for that one at all..I know its a classic..but I like other versions by authors who have put their heart and souls into their own telling.

For sure!
You can read my review & Anne's there LOVED this book! But have kleenix ready..Erik will break your heart.
This book stays as true as possible to the original "story/theme buts its Erik's story..Im sure the library would have it. I know you can order it as well. Do you like sequels as well?

As in..does it have alot of sex? No it dosent, its a very heart-renching story of Erik's life up to when he meets Christine. It really has you see what he went threw as a child,as a man, and understand why he is the way he is..even those who are not "Erik" fans will come away from this book with a better understanding of the man, feel his pain..and *sigh* break your heart.
I got my copy from the library and my library is in a medium sized city. If not, you can ask your library about InterLibrary Loan. Your library will check other libraries to find the book you want.

I have just finished reading it! But now I'm sad cos I don't know what to do next...

III agree it is not for younger fans, but I personally really liked her book as I felt it was more in depth into Erik's past/character/ and why he the became who he was. The original book is where the younger fans( and anyone new to POTO)should start though.
Then you can read reviews on Susan Kay's book before you decide Emma.

Anyway, I'm making it a personal goal to read POTO this coming year, and I hope you all won't mind if I ask questions. I'd even love some pointers and opinions about what to expect.
Thanks in advance.
