I have to confess that before I started listening to audio books, I didn't think much of chick lit. However, I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to, and reading, it. So much so that I started wondering why there isn't more chick lit featuring women of color. Oh sure, occasionally authors will throw in a sidekick with a tinge of color, but mostly the stars of these adventures and their counterparts are lily white.

Then I thought, well maybe no one writes about women of color in this genre because they think there's not an audience for it. The response from readers when I review chick lit on my blog brings people out of the woodwork. So we're reading it and it doesn't necessarily have to be about us for us to enjoy it. That led me to research chick lit outside of the mainstream. And guess what? There's books aplenty! I've not read all of it yet, but I've found chick lit with Indian, Latina, Asian and African-American women. And they're not the sidekick. They're the star!

Ari (readingincolor) | 3 comments Yes, yes and yes! I've been bogged down by some sad endings and I could do with some cheering up. Does YA count?

YA totally counts! Glad you're joining us.

Kim | 5 comments I will be the first to admit that the idea of reading chick lit made me squirm! But! Your explanation as to what made you start the challenge is intriguing...so here goes!

The extra challenge will be finding these books on island...or I'll probably just stick to book depository.

LiteraryMarie Chick lit is actually my favorite genre. I'm in!

Ronda Wynn (rondawynn) | 1 comments I am down for this challenge! I'd gotten away from colorful chick lit because it's not so easy to find, but this looks fun!

Rena (renareads) | 1 comments I'm ready to get started. Already been combing the bargain bins at Books-A-Million for titles. :-)

K.L. Brady (karlab27) | 3 comments I'm excited to join the challenge. I write and read chick lit and watch chick flicks. lol It's my life. Honestly, I love to laugh and I love happy endings. And I never get tired of them. So much so that I decided to write my own.

Because I'm writing so much now, I don't have time to find books on my own anymore. So when I found this list I knew I'd be all in. I've already read Feminista and The Bum Magnet (because I wrote it) so I'm gonna substitute two others for those. When I figure out which ones, I'll let you know.

The Bum Magnet by K.L. Brady

Can you add them to the bookshelf? I'm trying to build it up so that readers have an abundance of choices.

Ari (readingincolor) | 3 comments Yup, lemme just figure out how to do that. haha

:-) Click on "Bookshelf" in the upper right, once you're on that page, look on the upper left. Under "add books" type in the name of the book you want to add, click search and when it pops up, click "Add to group."

Micki | 1 comments I'm in starting with the novice level.

Liane Spicer (lianespicer) | 6 comments Love it! I've read several but the main characters were indeed typically white - which is why I was surprised when my first published book was classified and shelved as both AA romance and chick lit. The Chick Lit club also featured it.

I read all kinds of books and chick lit is perfect light reading. Off to browse the bookshelf!

Susan | 1 comments I'm in- thanks for the heads up! I've been re-reading "Dirty Red" by Vicki Stringer, though this probably is more Street Lit than Chick Lit, there's alotta crossover. I also love downloading and listening to eAudiobooks via my iPhone. So, I'm happy to know about what other folks are reading and enjoying. Meanwhile, check out my urban fiction blog at http://www.phatfiction.blogspot.com

Kim | 5 comments So any of you chick lit challenge readers in the Caribbean? I've not been to the library but no joy in the bookstores here (Barbados)for authors of colour. Suggestions?

I've forsaken Amazon now that I've discovered the wonders of bookdepository and their free international shipping. Trying to curb my book spending, space is increasingly limited & I haven't given in to an e-reader yet.

message 21: by Liane (new)

Liane Spicer (lianespicer) | 6 comments Bookdepository sounds like something I need to look into. I'm also trying to curb my book buying as I'm flat out of space but I still give in now and then. I swear I won't get an e-reader, but I've downloaded the free Kindle app to my laptop and I've bought a few that way... Also taken advantage of some of the free downloads of classics I've been meaning to read or re-read for ages.

message 22: by Kim (new)

Kim | 5 comments Yeah you need to check out bookdepository. I can't preach their wonderfulness loud enough!
I have two ereader apps on my blackberry, so like you I've read some free classics and other books. I don't know how long I will hold out though!

message 23: by Kari (new)

Kari This looks like it will be a lot of fun. Thank you for forming this group, since I really do love chick lit. I want to do the novice level, since I read about 1 book a month and I already have a long "to-read" list. Do I keep track on my own or do I make another counter for this group.

Thanks for joining. You're welcome to do either. You can start your own folder over here and list your reads as you go. That way, other members can see what you've read and, perhaps, find something new to read.

Veronica Kelly | 0 comments Hi All!

I'm the author of, Don't Tell Your Cousin, (eBook, available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble).

It's a tale of a twisted and steamy love triangle involving two cousins and a married man, a grisly love affair full of deceit, mayhem, and shameful women. As the mountain of lies come tumbling down and the drama unfolds, Amanda is forced to hold a mirror to herself and come to terms with a reflection she struggles to accept.

I'm a newbie to GoodReads and I appreciate the support!

Thanks,
Veronica E. Kelly
