Okay folks, another tough alphabet challenge for those addicted to challenges. The idea is to fill out the alphabet over the course of the year with character names. You may use first or last name of a character. It's up to you if you want to use only mysteries or mix it up. For the truely obcessed, you could do character first names only, last names only, or do two lists: one for female character names and one for male character names. Just post on your list which your doing.

Example: From any Murder, She Wrote book, the main character is Jessica Fletcher. She could be a "J" character using her first name, or an "F" character using her last name.

Titles, rank, or means of address don't count, such as: Mr, Mrs, Miss, Doctor, Inspector, Captain, etc.

Starts Jan 1, 2011. You have the entire year to complete this challenge.

You can only use one character per book, so that you have to read 26 books for the challenge.

It does not have to be the main character but lets say in a 300 page book they should be mentioned a few times. (For Example, for X character you could use Xenophilious Lovegood from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. He obviously isn't a main character but an entire chapter and a huge scene revolves around him.) A minor character will work just fine, as long as they aren't mentioned just once in passing.

Please list the book that you got the character from and the author. This helps everyone else in case they are checking other lists to give them ideas. Example:

X = Xenophilious Lovegood from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling

Using witches, vampires, etc. is fine. Non-human as in animal is a little more tricky. Someone's pet probably wouldn't be enough to count but if they indeed are the main character of a mystery, then yes, that would work. Sticking with my Harry Potter example: Hedgwig (Harry's owl), Crookshanks (Hermoine's cat) and Scabbers (aka Peter Pettigrew) are described enough to have personalities that they are indeed enough of a character to qualify. However, I wouldn't use Buckbeak the Hippogriff because he is more like a pet.

Good luck!

A little hint for a tough letter: "Q". If you read The XYZ Murders by Ellery Queen, in The Tragedy of X, Mr.Drury Lane's valet is named "Quacey."

To start with, I think one list is easy enough, using either first or last names. For awhile, you just fill in as you read. Gets hard when you're stuck needing just a few crazy letters left and you're trying to find a book with a Q or Z character! lol

Good luck everyone.

Yes, the challenge starts Jan 1, 2011 and runs for the full year.

Yes, please list the book that you got it from and the author.

However, I wouldn't use Buckbeak the Hippogriff because he is more like a pet.

I will add these to the first post so they are easy to find later, if anyone needs to check back.

HELP! I need help with letter X. Almost all of you have chosen Xena Turbin, from Murder on Ice, but that isn't an option for me because I can't get the book. Do you have another idea? (Mystery if it's possible).

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I used X Dames A Lucy Ripkin Mystery by J.J. Henderson which is not a literary masterpiece, but it's readable. :) The other good news is that when I bought it there were loads of copies on Amazon for just one cent.

For character? X Dames as a character?

Sandy | 93 comments There is a non-cozy mystery series by Christopher Brookmyre featuring a character named Angelique De Xavier. I haven't read them so I don't know how they are. The books are; A Big Boy Did It and Ran Away, The Sacred Art of Stealing and, A Snowball in Hell.

Xavier Ramirez in String of Lies by Mary Ellen Hughes. I enjoyed the book. :)

SOOO sorry Marisa! I confused myself about which challenge we were talking about!!!

I had a couple of choices for character "X" names:

A Christmas Mystery In Provence has a character named "Xavier de la Rochereau"

Immaculate Reception has a character by the name of "Xavier Jones"

neither are the protagonist but both are very major characters in the stories.

Thank you very much, Sandy, Donna and Jennifer E. I have "String of Lies" in my TBR, so I don't have to get any other book *happy dancing* (and I liked a lot the first one *winking*). I write down "A Christmas Mystery in Provence" in my TBB list, it looks nice,
