One of the things I really liked about this series was that Katniss was, I felt, a good role model character. Of course I don't think all main characters need to be good role models (in fact, it's quite often better when they aren't), but when a book becomes a cultural phenomenon, then I think it becomes important.
Case in point- I liked the Twilight series when I first read them, except the last one anyway, because they were silly, engrossing little romances and I thought Meyer's treatment of sexuality was interesting. However, when everyone and her dog looked to Bella as a role model and thought that her relationship with Edward represents a positive romance, then that becomes more than just a story. It becomes part of our culture, and not a very healthy part.
Katniss hasn't affected the culture as much as Bella did, at least around here, but I'd much rather have her anyday!

I thought Katniss was a great, strong character and that the story was engrossing and well-written. Let us know what you think, and remember, it's okay for grown-ups to post too!
