Read an apocalyptic book and think others might enjoy it? Post about it here! Also, add it to the bookshelf for other to browse through.

There's a lot of really good suggestions on the shelf! Man I want to read them all! So many good books, so little time!

So, I loved this one:
Birthmarked is more dystopian than post-apocalyptic though...it was really good!

Also, The Maze Runner series (which is already on this bookshelf) is one of my favs! I can't wait for The Death Cure! Same with The Forest of Hands and Teeth Series. Looking forward to the third book.

I just read Awaken from Netgalley, it doesn't come out till May though. But it was good!

This is another good series:
Inside Out Outside In

These are a few that aren't out yet that I'm really looking forward to:
The Iron Thorn (Iron Codex, #1) by Caitlin Kittredge Enclave (Razorland, #1) by Ann Aguirre Possession by Elana Johnson Drought by Pam Bachorz Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver

Sorry about my rambling! :)

Hey Summer are we gonna do a monthly read? That'd be fun!

^^ I'm so excited for all of those books up there!

We can :) Have any suggestions for the first monthly read?

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

That book Hollowland you have on the shelf looks really interesting and funny :)

I'm game for anything though!

message 5: by Summer, MIA since 2014 (new)

Summer (sunsset) | 49 comments Mod
Ta-da! Hollowland it is then.

Now to hope the library has it.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

cool!! If the library doesn't have it I just bought it in ebook format for 99 cents!"

Summer (sunsset) | 49 comments Mod
So cheap?! I'm gonna have to download it too.
Boo

lézengő reader (kergezerge) Amy, is it awailable in a printable format? I couldn't read it through on the screen, and I found hard copies on Amazon only, but they say they don't ship to Hungary.

message 9: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 28, 2010 04:36PM) (new)

Hmmmm...I'm not sure. They don't ship to you? Lame! If you can't find it anywhere else, I think we can do two books for the monthly read. We can pick another one?

Would this be ok Summer?

How about:
The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner
This one would be good. Can you get this one Zerge? Does anyone else have a problem with reading two books?

message 10: by Summer, MIA since 2014 (new)

Summer (sunsset) | 49 comments Mod
Yeah, that sounds fine. It'd suck to have someone left out of the monthly read.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Seriously! Zerge let us know if you can get this one and we'll add it to the shelf!

message 12: by lézengő reader (new)

lézengő reader (kergezerge) Thanks, Amy, this Maze Runner really seems good, and is awailable and affordable, but your original idea of one book monthly is ideal, so please, don't change it for my sake! Still I can try to get Hollowland through a bookshop and if they can't get it for me either, then I can join to you in February!

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok! Well we can do Maze Runner in February then, or do a separate voting poll! I hope you can get Hollowland though! You can still comment in the other topics in the group! :)

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

So I've been meaning to try:
The Giver (The Giver, #1) by Lois Lowry
But haven't gotten around to it yet. I heard it's really good. Has anyone read it??

message 15: by Summer, MIA since 2014 (new)

Summer (sunsset) | 49 comments Mod
I've had that on my to-read list for forever.
The main reason I haven't read it though, is the cover is really unappealing to me.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

So I just finished:
Obernewtyn (The Obernewtyn Chronicles, #1) by Isobelle Carmody
It was ok...it was dystopian, but I was disappointed that the world building was shunned by character development.

I think it's on to Feed (Newsflesh, #1) by Mira Grant now. I've heard it's pretty good. And hey...zombies!

message 17: by Summer, MIA since 2014 (new)

Summer (sunsset) | 49 comments Mod
Zombie books <3
My favorite!

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

OMG so I just read:
Across the Universe by Beth Revis
It was so completely amazing people, read it! You may ask: how is it dystopian if it's set in space? Ha! That's where you'll be surprised my friends! It is dystopian with a sci-fi twist (or sci-fi with a dystopian twist, I think either way would work haha). It was great, you won't regret reading it! Read it, you know you want to...

*Suzy (ereaderuser)* (suzyereaderuser) @Amy...Feed was a great book. One of my favs from 2010. And I know there are at least 2 more coming in the series.

I have Across the Universe on my TBR list.

message 20: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (krististern) Wow, you guys have some great books there. I wouldn't take Birthmarked off the list... it's an amazing read, dystopian not apopolyptic but great book, kept me thinking for a long time after I read it.

Feed was great, too.

Across the Universe is so amazing, I got it as soon as it came out. Did you know that was a debut for Beth Revis? I'm a big Indie follower and supporter, the book was a bit pricy but well worth it.

Oh, I have a feeling I'll be spending way to much time here....

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

There's a lot of PA and Dystopians coming out this year too. It's growing as a genre! I'm really excited! :)

@Suzy: Feed has climbed my TBR pile. I hope to get to it soon!

@Kristi: I loved, loved, loved Across the Universe!

message 22: by Nichola (new)

Nichola | 28 comments I'm adding Across the Universe to my TBR pile which is steadily growing, lol. I have Feed on my list too, I may read it next.

message 23: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 04, 2011 03:32PM) (new)

Anyone heard of Bumped by Megan McCafferty ?
It looks good but also somewhat weird.
I haven't yet decided if I want to read it.

message 24: by Nichola (new)

Nichola | 28 comments I saw this too, it sounds really good.

message 25: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (krististern) I have, I haven't read it though. I think the theory is the world will end if any child bearing girl, hence TEEN, doesn't bear a child at 16 whether she wants to or not then the population will die out. I think? Maybe not. Maybe it's the opposite, LOL.
I guess I should have said I heard of it but haven't a clue outside of what others have said here and there about it.
Is it out already?

message 26: by Nichola (new)

Nichola | 28 comments It doesn't come out until April, I think.

It's a good first read. Definitely beginner level reading. Great controversial topics and completely unique. Hope that helps. :]

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmmm...you've convinced me! I'm gonna read it soon!

I'll also probably give Bumped a try. It sounds too interesting to pass up!

*Suzy (ereaderuser)* (suzyereaderuser) That's the problem. Most of them sound too interesting to pass up. And our to-read lists just keep growing!

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Yo peeps! I just finished Delirium by Lauren Oliver and it was totally made of awesome-sauce! All my fellow Dystopian lovers (that would be all of you!) would totally heart this book! Try it!

ALittleBrittofFun Amy wrote: "So I've been meaning to try:

YES OMG! I own this book. Read it for the first time in 6th grade and I'm obsessed with it. It is actually one of my favorite books of all time. They're turning it into a movie from what I hear. I definitely recommend it.

Oh I love that book too!

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

So this book sounds pretty good:
Scored by Lauren McLaughlin
I'm not sure if I like the cover though

message 34: by Bethany (new)

Bethany The Giver is really good. It's an easy read, but it's such a good story. I just read Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1) by Beth Revis too. I LOVED IT!!! It was sooo flippin good. Definately one of my favs so far this year.

I'm sad...i'm having such a hard time getting through the scorch trials...i dunno why. I just can't seem to get into. It's like i have readers block :(

message 35: by Sara (new)

Sara (meatball77) I just finished my ARC's and wrote reviews for both Wither and Bumped which are coming out soon. Wither Bumped

I really liked both but they were both flawed and either you're going to love them or hate them.

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm really excited for Wither, but Bumped sounds kinda weird. I haven't decided yet if I want to read it lol. Lucky you with your ARCs!! I'm jealous! :)

message 37: by Sara (new)

Sara (meatball77) I really liked Wither but I think it's going to be one of those books that you either love or hate. It's got some real problems that are going to make some not like it.

Bumped also is good but it's written for a younger audience, the sexual content is appropriate for that audience but is going to really freak some people out.

message 38: by Bethany (new)

Bethany Oh man....lol. I just looked up Bumped. I'm sorry, but it sounds totally icky! Just the title alone....oh, man....can't. stop. laughing.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

It does sound weird doesn't it? That's why I'm so iffy about reading it! Even though dystopian is awesome, that one just sounds plain strange!

message 40: by Sara (last edited Mar 25, 2011 09:39AM) (new)

Sara (meatball77) The reason it's good is that it's satire. It makes fun of marketing and teen sexuality and rebellion.

I just finished Awaken and it was ok.

I'm getting tired of the same old dystopian romance formula. Girl lives in strange world that is very creepy. Girl is happy with her life. Girl meets sexy young man who shows her what she's missing. Girl falls in love with him and rebels. Girl and Boy run away from creepy society end book cue sequel.

message 41: by Julie (new)

Julie S. Yes, how does this mysteriously brooding young man get that way? It's turning into one of those cardboard characters that shows up in every novel.

But I suppose that those just make the real characters in interesting books seeem even better by comparison.

message 42: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 25, 2011 01:36PM) (new)

Oh my gosh! You guys are so totally right! I've just been thinking back on the past few dystopians I've read and that formula is spot on! I like the ones that break out of the mold, like Across the Universe or Birthmarked.

message 43: by Hope (new)

Hope York (hopeyork) I've been reading The Forest of Hands and Teeth series and they're pretty awesome!

HAHA...that's hilarious. And true, not only with dystopian, but with sci-fi and fantasy in general. There's always this clueless heroine who meets this dark brooding guy and together they find that things aren't what they seem. It does get tiresome, but I find that the formula doesn't bother me as much as the content. So long as authors can come out with original ideas for the plot...I don't mind if they keep using the same formula for the love story. Just try and switch it up a bit, ya know?

message 45: by Jen (new)

Jen (baynej) | 169 comments Have you guys read "The Knife of Never Letting Go" series? If not, check it out, it's really compelling!

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

I've heard really good things about that one Jen! I hope I'll get to it eventually!

message 47: by lézengő reader (new)

lézengő reader (kergezerge) It's on my urgent to read list. The cover is already one of my favourites. ;)

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

So, I read Released (Released, #1) by Megan Duncan a couple days ago and it was pretty good! I loved the world it was set in. It's a post-apocalyptic with a paranormal story line. I love these kinds of books! :) Read it!

message 49: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 31 comments The Walking Dead Comics The Walking Dead Compendium Vol. 1 by Robert Kirkman . It came highly recommended to me and it was soooo good that I will pass on the recommendation. I'll just start by saying that I am not usually a comic book reader so I was a little intimidated at first but once I got started I couldnt stop. It has the most engrossing storyline of its kind in my opinion and I think thats in large part due to the visuals that go along. It's also not what I thought it was going to be which was a zombie movie-like action gore fest. It's almost 100% character driven and it didnt take long for emotional attachments to begin to take hold. I would love to discuss if anyone here has read them.

At first I thought it would be rather expensive since it's comic books, but there is a Compendium for sale which includes the first 48 comics and over 1000 pages on Amazon for around $34. Not too bad if you ask me!

message 50: by Claire (new)

Claire Merle (clairemerle) | 9 comments One of the best apocalyptic books I've read is Exodus by Julie Bretagna. It's really unique and beautifully written. Looking forward to getting my hands on Across the Universe, Birthmarked and Wither!
