Valerie (valerie3) | 9 comments For me it's the Georgia Nicholson books by Louise Rennison. Sure, the target age group is a little younger (12-16) but these are THE FUNNIEST books I've ever read. I have to restreain myself from reading this when people are around because I laugh so loud and for so long.
They are my guilty pleasure

Zoe Rider (zoexrider) | 28 comments These were my 10 favorite books read in 2010:

Books I would call horror....

Horns by Joe Hill
The description didn't do much for me, but someone recommended it and THEY WERE SO RIGHT. I love this book to death.

The Curse of the Wendigo by Rick Yancey
Sequel to "The Monstrumologist," which was also great. I am so in love with the relationship between Dr. Pellinore Warthrop (the monstrumologist of the first book's title) and young Will Henry. They could watch paint dry together and it'd still be a compelling read. (These are shelved as young adult books, but they don't read like YA.)

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters
Waters gives Shirley Jackson a run for her money with this languorous post-WWII-Britain haunted house novel.

Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist
Best vampire novel I've read in ages. I also read--and recommend--his "Handling the Undead" this year.

Under the Skin by Michel Faber
When you start reading, you think you have an idea of what's going on. That is not what's going on. This book sticks with you long after you're done.

Books I would say were dark/hardboiled/noir...

Dark Places by Gillian Flynn
I had a hard time choosing between this and her other novel, "Sharp Objects," for my list. Both were so good. No one does self-loathing, barely contained wrecks of female protagonists like Flynn.

The Nothing Man by Jim Thompson
The opening was a bit rough--you're thinking, "I have to spend a whole book with this buffoon?"--but the book is great. I think this, not "The Killer Inside Me," may be Thompson's best book.

Citrus County by John Brandon
The only book on the list that I read in print because @$^))(*^%#%! McSweeney's is too @&^$)!*(#% hipster to #$&^(*$%# put out ebooks. (This one is really, really dark.)

Six Bad Things (Hank Thompson, #2) by Charlie Huston
Sequel to "Caught Stealing." I liked "Caught Stealing," especially for Hank Thompson's character arc, but I loved "Six Bad Things"--again because of Hank Thompson's character arc. (I'm dragging my feet on reading the final book, "A Dangerous Man," because I don't want to be done with Hank Thompson.)

And finally there's this one, which though it has some dark moments, is neither a 'dark' book nor horror...

A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan
One chapter is a 78-page PowerPoint presentation, which sounds gimmicky, but it was the most brilliant thing ever. The rest of the book was pretty fantastic, too.

Your list sounds great! I just put "The Killer Inside Me" and "Let the Right One In" on my Nook, I will now have to look for the rest of these. This website will prevent me from doing anything but read. My family will wish they had never given me my Nook!

Mlpmom (Book Reviewer) (mlpmombookreviewer) | 28 comments It might be a shorter list if I just say some of my favorite authors since a lot of them write more than one series/books.
