The Inheritance by Tamera Alexander takes place in 1877 in Copper Creek Colorado. McKenna Ashford decided that a change in scenery and life style would make things better for her and her 14 yr old brother. So they travel from Missouri to Copper Creek Colorado to start a new life and to live with McKenna's cousin. But when they arrive, they find out that her cousin's husband died from cholera. Her cousin was also pregnant and gave birth only days before. But the child didn't make it. The birthing was long and left her cousin weak and very sick. McKenna was there long enough to promise her cousin that she would take care of her 5yr old daughter Emma. Not only does McKenna inherit the care of her niece Emma but she also inherits her cousin's ranch. U.S. Marshal Wyatt Caradon met McKenna when she first arrived in town and helped her with the funeral arrangements. He also became immediately attracted to McKenna and her niece Emma. Because he's a U.S. Marshal, his job takes him everywhere, so he's gone a lot. But when he can he comes and visits with McKenna. Meanwhile McKenna and her brother Robert acquire jobs at a local livery stable. Robert repairs and makes wagons and McKenna makes quality custom made saddles. But the money from both is barely covering the payments the are needed to pay off the ranch. Not only that but Robert is unbearable. He is slipping away at night and during the day to go to saloons to drink and gamble. Wyatt caught Robert twice already in a saloon creating fights and accusing the dealers that they were cheating. After letting the men beat Robert almost to the pulp, he brings him back to the ranch. Then Wyatt volunteers to help McKenna with the ranch chores. When the brother of her cousin's husband shows up to claim the ranch and Emma, McKenna is left two choices. Either she can give up the ranch and Emma to this “uncle” or she can get married so that she can provide a proper home for Emma. Wyatt proposed and she accepts. In the end of the book, McKenna finds out that the “uncle” was just someone wanted the land because of the silver found near the river on the land. With everything resolved Wyatt, McKenna, Emma, and Robert live together and keep the ranch.
