MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Every time I see this thread I want to stop to comment. I’ve never commented because I hardly read anything last year that was memorable! How horrible is that? Almost everything new I read last year was crap or something I’d already read. Wow.

The only exception to that is Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers. I have to say that this book was a true gem. I saw the movie “Starship Troopers” long before I read the book (I’m not really a sci-fi kind of girl), so you can understand that I was hesitant to read it. :) I only read Starship Troopers because I got it from the free book pile in my apartment, but I am so glad I did. I’m happy to report that the only thing the book and the movie have in common is the title and a few character names.

That being said, the following is a list of my favorite re-reads of 2010.

Servant of the Bones by Anne Rice
Joust by Mercedes Lackey
The Ship Who Searched by Anne McCaffrey
Golden Trillium by Andre Norton
The Ship Who Sang by Anne McCaffrey
Silver May Tarnish by Andre Norton
The Duke's Ballad by Andre Norton
Kushiel's Justice by Jacqueline Carey
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
The Belgariad, Vol. 1: Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit by David Eddings
The Belgariad, Vol. 2: Castle of Wizardry, Enchanters' End Game by David Eddings

Lol...I had no idea Starship Troopers was a novel...all I remember about the movie is drooling over Denise Richards and digging that Blur - Song 2 was on the soundtrack :)

I've wanted to comment in this thread as well but so many of my novels last year were re-reads and many of the newer ones (excepting a select few that were amazing) didn't really impress me.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments According to Wikipedia (which can often be wrong) Starship Troopers inspired games like Starcraft and cartoons like Mobile Suit Gundam. :)

Denise Richards, huh? lol! Have you seen Wild Things? I thought it was a pretty good movie.

Lol any man worth his salt that has a thing for Denise Richards has seen Wild Things! In slow motion no less ;). Denise Richards and Vanessa Williams were definitely my crushes back in the day

Robert MacAnthony (steerpike7) | 218 comments If you like "Starship Troopers," check out the classic science fiction novel "The Forever War," by Joe Haldeman. Great book.

Slow motion?! ROTF! I refuse to feel bad about my Pierce Brosnan issues anymore. :)

I think I'm going to read this - it sounds pretty good. I want to read Ender's Game first. "Ender's Game" is supposed to be a reply to "Starship Troopers" and a review for The Forever War mentions that it has a similar philosophy to "Ender's Game" as well.

Rachel Cotterill (rachelcotterill) My reading highlight of last year was discovering China Mieville - I read The City & The City and then Kraken, in quick succession, and absolutely loved them both.

Rachel

Hmm....I've never read any China Mieville. I'll have to look her up :) Great choices incidentally by well pretty much everyone :) Ender's Game is Excellent MrsJoseph. I read the Alvin Maker series before I read Ender's Game and was really surprised by how different the writing was...loved it nonetheless :)

message 13: by Christine (new)

Christine I've heard a lot of good things about The City & The City but the reviews for Kraken weren't as good. I'm glad to hear you liked them both, Rachel.

You know, I could never really get into Alvin the Maker. I think I stopped after book 1 or 2 (can't remember).

China Mieville is a he. ;)

I have Perdido Street Station to read, but I haven't gotten to it yet. Too many books, too little time!

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Here are my favorites of 2010 (not counting re-reads):

Horns by Joe Hill
The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie
Everything's Eventual: 14 Dark Tales by Stephen King
Losing Julia by Jonathan Hull
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Soulless by Gail Carriger
If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride
Hurt Go Happy by Ginny Rorby

Not all of those are fantasy, but I loved them, so there! :D

I have Perdido. I also have The Scar. Haven't tackled them yet.

Un Lun Dun was rather good too.

message 18: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Oh yes, I have Un Lun Dun too... Forgot that.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol china Melville is a he, eh? Well, I suppose I've only proven the fact that I'm unfamiliar with him. Lol

Quite a few folks had a hard time with the Alvin Maker series. I'm disappointed that there was never a real conclusion to the series. You didn't miss out.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Ummm...... Pierce Brosnan issues? Lmao

message 21: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Cotterill (rachelcotterill) Christine - they're very different in style... but both very good IMO. Kraken felt quite Gaimanesque to me (and I think I've read everything he's written!)
