Jennifer (jennifertudor) | 145 comments This year I'm going to do the A-Z challenge, twice. Once for novels and again for my graphic novels. I'm also going to try the bookshelf challenge... I own so many books I have to read!

Edit: I've decided to change my challenge a bit. I was originally going to do 60 books but I've put the number up to 100 since I'm reading so many graphic novels.

Jennifer (jennifertudor) | 145 comments Finished Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. I loved this book. 4 stars.

It's a little tough at first to get into the dialogue but the narrative is beautiful from the beginning. I can see why this one is a classic but I'm not really sure why it's been banned.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I felt the same way about it, Jen.

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments It has to be for the word "nigger" Jen it is used a lot and that was one of the reasons that Huck Finn is being constantly challenged and banned.

Great book though, I gave it four stars as well.

Makes sense!

Babs | 258 comments Some thoughts as to why this book was banned. Year this book was written-1937.

Hurston was black, bright and born in the wrong era. She was probably perceived as an "uppity" black woman who didn't know her place. Publishers would have been taking a chance on producing a book by a black, female writer..culture and politics weren't in her favor....IMO
