You can only take ten songs on your desert island iPod

it goes on and on my friends.
Someone started singing it not knowing what it was,
and they'll continue singing it forever just because...
(repeat from top)"
Or maybe, "Ten Trillion Bottles of Beer on the Wall."
If I'm not alone already on my island, I soon will be.

Like, if I was forced to grab ten in the next five minutes before being air evacuated to the island, I would panic, and pick:
Moondance - Van Morrison
Mrs. Robinson - Simon & Garfunkel
Peg - Steely Dan
Band on the Run - Wings
Voodoo Child - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Suzanne - Fairport Convention
Skating - Vince Guaraldi
Burning Down the House - Talking Heads
Play That Funky Music - Wild Cherry
Superstition - Stevie Wonder

dan auerbach - heartbroken, in disrepair

e - my old raincoat
easy aloha's - lachgiraffe (when i feel the need to laugh out loud and don't want to do it alone, i can do it with these crazy people)
fiona apple - get him back (whoever stuck me on this island, with only ten songs, i'm going to deal with them one day)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5L2r4...
jens lekman - when i said i wanted to be your dog (something to cheer me up, and to sing along to)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJGIUL...
loney, dear - i am john
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuLkYz...
otis blackwell - daddy rolling stone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PZiZb...
roosbeef - alleen (for when i want to feel sorry for myself)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YzepC...
stuurbaard bakkebaard - pimp my funky brain (for when i'm in the mood for something a little different)
here's another song of theirs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YzepC...
the velvet underground - the gift (i'm not sure if there will be books on this island so i'll need at least one story, about someone who's worse off than me)

The accoustic or electrical version of Layla?

Are there people who like the acoustic version better? Why? I feel like the song is made by Duane Allman's slide in the instrumental coda.

I hope there aren't.

you can always sing that one by yourself. there are several of my favorites that didn't make the desert island, because i know i have the music and lyrics memorized, and on a desert island i don't have to worry about anyone hearing me sing.

i know when i saw clapton in concert last the power and strength of the full volume electric version of layla made the concert.

I have actually faded out the instrumental part on mixed tapes midway through, so that it wouldn't be on the tape. Is that sacrilege?

Flatt & Scruggs - Foggy Mountain Breakdown
David Allan Coe - You Never Even Called Me By My Name
Jerry Jeff Walker - Redneck Mothers
Hank Williams - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
Johnny Cash - A Boy Named Sue
Charley Pride - Crystal Chandeliers
Loretta Lynn - Coal Miner's Daughter
Soggy Bottom Boys - I am a Man of Constant Sorrow
Willie Nelson - The City of New Orleans
Roger Miller - King of the Road

Smidgeon would be a good word to work into a country song, don't you think? A smidgeon of bourbon when my horse starts a cryin' on account of mama bein' in jail...

Of course. And if we are stuck on the island long enough, we can work on a Dutch karaoke version.

1. If you really, really hate me, accidentally give me Jackie's playlist.
2. I loosely divided these songs into five “rockers” and “not-rockers”. I figure I'd want music for different moods...sometimes I'd want to rock out, sometimes I'd want to get mellower.
3. I thought a lot about songs I'd get the most out of hearing as opposed to the songs I could just sort of play in my head. For example, I can groove to Kraftwerk without actually hearing Kraftwerk, if that makes sense.
Rockers! The rockers are the kind of songs that would lift my spirits, make me want to pump my fist in the air, and burn some energy in a good way.
1. Drive-by Truckers-Let There Be Rock. I think DBT grew up in a neighborhood similar to mine.

2. eels-Rock Hard Times. A Great “fuck you, I can survive anything you can throw at me” song. For some reason this mix on this youtube clip takes about thirty seconds to get going. Patience.

3. AC/DC-You Shook Me All Night Long. You don't really have to ask why, do you?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bomv-6...
4. Tom Waits-Downtown Train. Arguably my favorite song for close to 20 years...this song is its own weather system...it makes me feel rain on my cheeks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7jsEE...
5. Lucero-Nights Like These. This song makes me feel like I'm drunk. I'm going to need that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r4Ymy...
Not Rockers...for mellower scenarios, when I'm just leaning back against a tree or something.
6. Beach Boys-God Only Knows
So perfect, like math and love combined....I can listen to this song over and over.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDfH_J...
7. Sparklehorse-Apple Bed. I don't know if I can explain this one...but I find the main melody running through my head a lot and put this song on when I want to calm down.

8. Aphex Twin-Rhubarb. I feel kind of like I'm floating through space with this song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVvjXJ...
9. Stars of the Lid-The Lonely People (Are Getting Lonelier). Transcendent. Like church, only better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87SCL9...
10. Sigur Ros-Vraka. This could be the second hymn after #9. Sigur Ros makes me believe in God.

I was hoping you wouldn't notice :)
I'm still thinking.

1. If you really, really hate me, accidentally give me Jackie's playlist.
2. I loosely divided these so..."
And you call those first five songs rockers?!

Also, I take it back. Both Jackie and Michelle's lists horrify me, but I think Michelle's horrifies me a little more. When the FBI surround my house and blast loud music to get me to surrender, they'll be playing "Imagine"....

1. Beautiful Goodbye, Amanda Marshall
2. Blessed, Elton John
3. Europa, Santana
4. Dante's Prayer, Loreena McKennitt
5. Lady, Little River Band
6. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, The Platters
7. Boogie Wonderland, Earth Wind & Fire
8. Tush, ZZ Top
9. You Are Not Alone, Michael Jackson
10. You Raise Me Up, Secret Garden
Agreed, it's an excellent song. With a mesmerizing video in which MJ and Lisa Marie try to convince us they're girlfriends in a Maxfield Parrish temple.

My favorite local radio station just sent out a call for answers to that question. I think they'll probably turn it into a countdown that should be pretty awesome. In the past they've asked for more general things like "the best ten songs of all time" and the answers are inevitably Imagine, Hey Jude, etc. I think this question is kind of neat because it allows you to ignore the concept of "best" and just put in what you love.
