Kathryn (kathrynh) I get my books from the library. I am on a first name basis with everyone at the counter and I'm sure whomever is in charge of the order desk just rolls their eyes when they see an e-mail from me.

A Quilter's Holiday by Jennifer Chiaverini
Winter Bloom by Tara Heavey
Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda
Dark Emperor and Other Poems of the Night by Joyce Sidman

I love children's picture books. Sometimes they look at my rather strange at the library when I have more children's books to check out than adult books....

I seldom go to the library. There is something about actually owning the book that makes me happy. I have hundreds of copies in paperback format to read, but I do most of my reading on my Kindle. For someone who was sure she'd miss holding the actual book in her hands, I've totally changed my mind! We recently bought new phones because we changed service providers. I know have Kindle for Droid on my phone, so I don't even have to take my Kindle with me when I have my hair done, for instance; I can just read from my phone! LOL!

I can't begin to tell you what books I have on the Kindle to read. I know one is the Wine Country Mystery series. I've read 2 and I think I have 3 left to read. Actually, I have 9 pages of book titles I've downloaded and haven't read yet. Yikes! :-)

It's just like to TBR list here on goodreads!

Sheila (sheilaj) I love my library. I can sit here at home on my laptop and search and order whatever I want and in a few days it is ready for pickup. My library has a sharing partnership with probably 150 libraries in a two state area and I end up getting things from libraries in towns I've never heard of and then I get to pick them up and return them at my local library just 2 blocks from my mouse. I read only large print and listen often to audiobooks. Here is what I currently have checked out.

Remember me [text (large print)] Clark, Mary Higgins. 1/28/2011,23:59
The virgin blue [text (large print)] Chevalier, Tracy. 2/2/2011,23:59
L. A. outlaws [text (large print)] Parker, T. Jefferson. 2/2/2011,23:59
Undercurrents [text (large print)] Pearson, Ridley. 2/2/2011,23:59
Natural suspect [text (large print)] : a collaborative novel Bernhardt, William, 1960- 2/2/2011,23:59
The Chopin manuscript [text (large print)] Deaver, Jeffery. 2/3/2011,23:59
The gift [sound recording] Patterson, James, 1947- 2/3/2011,23:59
Bones of betrayal [text (large print)] Bass, Jefferson. 2/3/2011,23:59
Naked came the phoenix [text (large print)] : a serial novel Barr, Nevada. 2/3/2011,23:59
Devil's corner [sound recording] Scottoline, Lisa. 2/3/2011,23:59
Honeymoon with [love] murder [text(large print)] Hart, Carolyn G. 2/4/2011,23:59
Love & death [sound recording] Hart, Carolyn G. 2/4/2011,23:59
Rules of deception [sound recording] Reich, Christopher. 2/4/2011,23:59
The Romanov prophecy [text (large print)] : a novel Berry, Steve, 1955- 2/4/2011,23:59
A beautiful place to die [text (large print)] Nunn, Malla. 2/4/2011,23:59
The sister [text (large print)] : a novel Adams, Poppy, 1972- 2/4/2011,23:59

OK, I admit it I'm OCD.

message 5: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathrynh) No, not OCD, just a lover of books. I order books, and there are several in front of me and I swear I get them all on the same day. Our library also gets books from all over and it's fun to see where some come from. My library also does not charge overdue fees. I try diligently to get them back on time. I read many books in large print. I get library books for a friend in her 80s that can only read large print and we often times read the same books.

Books to read and quilting projects I always have plenty to keep me busy!

message 6: by Skoo (new)

Skoo | 4 comments I got some new books in the mail this week. It was a happy day
I opened up the box to see More Last minute Knits, by Joelle Hoverson
The Practical Guide to Patchwork, by Elizabeth Hartman and Lifting the Sky by Mackie d'arge.
I've already knit several hats on the front cover of More Knitting and read Lifting the Sky. A fast and very enjoyable read.
I'm happy to see this group a bit more active.

message 7: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) I've almost finished The Chopin manuscript [text (large print)] Deaver, Jeffery. It is an interesting concept for a book. It says Jeffery Deaver is the author but really each chapter is by a different author. They must have passed around the manuscript like a round robin because there are chapters by Lee Child, Lisa Scottoline and about a dozen other authors that continue the story and then pass it on. It is a spy thriller surrounding rare music that is coded with terrorist data in the musical score. Very entertaining.

Hi Skoo! Please re-introduce yourself....we want to know all about you. We've got some new members. Your books sound great. I dabble in knitting. Dishcloths are my forte and now little wash clothes for my granddaughter.. I've not heard about Lifting The Sky...I think the author has a terrific name, Mackie D'Arge. Have you read anything by her before?

Dang, Sheila! I may have to check out Chopin! It sounds like a fun read!

message 11: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (frecklesquilts) | 104 comments I updated my list at the library. I'm hoping that some of the books and CDs I added will become available soon.

Shelia:

I get most of my library books this way whether or not I think there will be a wait list or not. I only have to wait a day or two for the books to be available and I don't have to travel all over as they will transfer to the library closest to me. This system even has started offering x3 free music downloads per week! We also have cards with multiple counties in the Denver-metro area, too. The county in which I grew up, though, has the best system.

I'm not big on anything that raises my taxes, but I would always approve any type of levy for the library system! I love my library!!!!!

message 12: by Dawn (new)

Dawn Dukes | 11 comments I just finished Learning to Swim by Sara J. Henry, a book I won on Goodreads First Reads. I didn't know what to expect being one of the first to read this book. I'm used to getting recommendations from other people, book reviews, etc. I was more than pleasantly surprised. The main character witnesses a little boy being thrown from a ferry, jumps in and manages to save his life. Who threw him in the lake and why is the crux of the story. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with a twist at the end. At less than 300 pages, it's a quick read.

message 13: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (frecklesquilts) | 104 comments That book sounds great! We can rely on your recommendation and review now...

My husband brought me home a batch of books from the library last week. I was still reading HP Chamber of Secrets, but I put that aside last night to read Deep Kiss of Winter. I needed a romance/sci-fi/vampire fix and this book fit the bill. I just started the second story in the book. It featured a character from another Gena Showalter book I read a long time. I need to go back and read it because I don't think I finished that one. The first story was really good. I'm going to do some research because the author probably featured some of the characters in another book, too. I like collections like these. Characters and worlds are able to be revisted. The stories may be long enough to have been featured in their own book, but it was nice to have them together.

I'm torn, though, with all this reading. I have a quilt basted ready to be quilted. I've been doodling and pretend doodling trying to get in the mode for some FMQ. It's easier to pick up a book when I'm in procrastination mode.

message 14: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathrynh) It's darn hard to do it all, isn't it...read, quilt, quilt, read - such a dilemma!

On Folly Beach is going well. I really like it. I'm anxious to have all of the dangling unknowns come together.

Dawn Dukes | 11 comments Kathryn you forgot the eating part!

message 16: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathrynh) How could I every forgetting eatting!!!!

message 17: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) I just picked up a Lydia's Charm by Wanda E. Brunstetter
Lydia's Charm by Wanda E. Brunstetter
on audiobook but haven't started it yet.

We don't have a topic called "What are you eating right now" but I had to share this one with you all. Hubby and I went out to eat for Valentines Day and we picked Panda Buffet. Well my fortune today was "Out of confusion comes new patterns" How is that for a fortune for a quilter? Ha!

message 18: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathrynh) I love that! Wish we had a Panda Buffet or something here. The Chinese restaurants here are awful...my husbands fixing prime rib for dinner tonight...Our 32nd wedding anniversary is Thursday and we're going out to dinner for that...

I'm thinking a What are you eating right now thread might be fun!

message 19: by Tanya (new)

Tanya #TeacherReader | 90 comments Our town is really restaurant challenged with not many choices and huge crowds on Valentine's Day, so we are having cheese fondue with our 12 year old.

message 20: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabeth8921) | 92 comments Order books online from the library. I'm on a mystery kick also Agatha Christie writing under her pen name Mary Westmacott " Absent in Spring" and A Daughters a Daughter." These are not mysteries but wonderful short British novels.

message 21: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathrynh) I've got two books waiting to be picked up at the library. I'll do that later today. I just got earlier in the week The Book of Tomorrow and I'll start that later.

I'm off to do some sewing.

message 23: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (frecklesquilts) | 104 comments I've missed updates on this thread.....

DH made a library run today. It's becoming a weekend habit. I've added B and C books for the Sue Grafton series to my stack.

I want this quilt book:

Scrap Basket Sensations by Kim Brackett
(http://www.martingale-pub.com/store/p...)

Someone mentioned jelly rolls in another thread. I'm not a huge fan of them or charm packs or layer cakes, etc except for the fact that they do save you from the quilting cutting step which is my least favorite part of quilting. I have a couple of reasons for not buying into the rage about them and all the books and patterns that have taken over our quilting world. One of the reasons is that I don't use many of the short cut piecing tricks that so dominate patterns these days....

I want this book, though, and would probably make the quilts and blocks using my preferred piecing techniques. I kept forgetting to visit the sites on the blog tour so it looks like I'll have to buy it!

Have you tried the library? My library has quilting books which is terrific, then I can really look at them before buying.

I'm going to look at this one on your link, I'm not sure if I've seen it before.

I've been drooling. I've not been buying quilt books, but this one is a good one. I figure I can find it at Connecting Threads during one of their sales.

I go nuts when Connecting Threads has their book sale. I'm doing their BOM they started this month. It's a March daffodil that's foundation paper pieced. I just put it together yesterday and will quilt and bind it today.

I really liked Loft Creations, I signed up to get her posts. Have you seen I'm Just a Guy Who Quilts. He's a good blogger as well.

message 27: by Tanya (new)

Tanya #TeacherReader | 90 comments I buy from Connecting Threads all the time. I'm trying to convince myself to order the Hooterville baby quilt kit. Their fabric is decent quality and very reasonable!

Has anyone read
The Murderer's Daughters by Randy Susan Meyers ? I noticed it was the new Target book club selection, but our library does not own it. I went ahead and ordered it from Amazon with another book I needed for book club to get free shipping...I have a good track record for enjoying Target's book club picks!

[book:Clara and Mr. Tiffany|8296140]

Keys to the Castle

The Paris Wife

and Jodi Picoults new one Sing You Home: A Novel

message 29: by Tanya (new)

Tanya #TeacherReader | 90 comments I liked "The Paris Wife," it reminded me of "Loving Frank" without the tragic ending. Let me know what you think of "Clara and Mr. Tiffany" and "sing You Home," I'm a big fan Picoult and Vreeland!

I'm #18 at the library for The Murderer's Daughters.

Don' feel badly my book club is reading

Slacks & Calluses: Our Summer in a Bomber Factory by Constance Bowman Reid and my library didn't have it. I had to buy it as well. I always donate my purchased book back to the library, so I don't mind too much.

message 36: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabeth8921) | 92 comments What a great idea to donate our books to the library! Our quilting section is poor and behind the times. Patchwork Place publishers are here and I wonder if they donate. I would think so. They have some very wonderful books. I do donate through friends of the library and they sell them.
6 inches of snow on the ground time to clean the sewing room! Why can I not throw or give away anything.

message 37: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathrynh) I just brought home a quilting book from the library A Cozy Quilted Christmas: 90 Designs, 17 Projects to Decorate Your Home by Kim Schaefer. She does such whimsical things I wanted to see what she does for the holidays...I know a Christmas book in February...we do have snow outside, so maybe that what spurred me.

message 38: by Dawn (new)

Dawn Dukes | 11 comments I just returned from the library with a bunch of books:

New Mercies by Sandra Dallas
The Book Shop by Penelope Fitzgerald
The Weed That Strings The Hangman's Bag (audio)
The Memory Keeper's Daughter (pen pal book)
Caribou Island by David Vann
The Revenge of the Radioactive Lady by Elizabeth Stuckey-French (which is supposed to be a hoot) I told my husband that the housework and cooking might go downhill because I have a lot to read!

I also picked up enough material to make 3 baby quilts! I am beyond excited.

message 39: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathrynh) I bought Jodi Picoults new one Sing You Home. There is a CD included of music the author wrote the lyrics for. I haven't listened yet, but will give you all a review when I do.

message 40: by Tanya (new)

Tanya #TeacherReader | 90 comments I'm jealous! I'm waiting for it from the library!

message 41: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathrynh) A friend at the quilt store gave the first in a series that she says is really good Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear. It sounds really good. She also gave me The Diary of Mattie Spenser by Sandra Dallas and The Women by T. C. Boyle (that would be the women in Frank Lloyd Wright's life). She said if I liked Loving Frank I'd like this one.
